I may be wrong, but they dont play on carpet anymore
too fast and too low rebound

now it's plexicushion in australia, decoturf (uso, cincy) and there used to be the rebound ace in the early 2000's also

red clay and blue clay differ just in the color
but in madrid this year there was a problem with the soil and it made the court really slippy
Fed is the Blue Clay GOAT btw

Carpet hasn't been used for about 3 or 4 years now. A carpet was literally that - a mat that was laid over a hard surface. Hardcourts are essentially concrete/apshalt. The speed of a hardcourt is determined by how much sand is put in the paint that is used to paint the court.

This, and also there's one more factor involved, and those are tennis balls.Whether is harder or softer rubber, it's usually slower or faster courts.

Carpet is an atrocious surface to play on. It plays havoc on your knees when making quick directional changes and your feet can get caught on it.

it's a very fast surface and the ball really zips off the surface so if you're like Rafa, forget it. If all 4 slams played on carpet, Raonic would be unbeatable.

do you play tennis? Indoor carpet is just what the name says: carpet

I'm not sure whether they play on carpet anymore. but when I played in a team in the winter we would often play on carpet. I don't like the tennis on carpet not so much because of the speed but because of the low skidding of the ball. I played best on carpet though because I had a good serve. A good serve is hard to return on carpet especially a slice serve.

Sorry, but it shows that you don't understand tennis. It's not only about Raonic service, it's about other players too.You must inlcude many factors not only this.Thomas Muster was a clay court specialist, but he won matches against Sampras and other great servers on indoors carpet.

Any idea why they decided to do away with carpet? Injury scare to players?

Yep. I believe Rafa and Roger both pushed for it via the players' council.

And what Federer asks, he gets :)

Apart from grass, carpet is the most 'knee friendly' surface that you can get.

Alot of people don't like it because its fast and has too low a bounce. Even weak players can look good on carpet because the ball just zips off the court. It's a great 'equalizer' of abilities though because you don't have to work the ball as hard, but that isn't necessarily a good thing in terms of your own game or technique development.

It's still a fun surface to play on though, just screws up your timing for the hardcourt season.

Wish I could try carpet. I'm assuming that it benefits people with more conservative grips as well? I have no issue with hitting shots at waist or lower with fh and bh at all.

some of the finest tennis of the 70´s and 80´s was played indoors, on fast supreme court.

pros of the 50´s and 60´s also played a lot on wood.

plenty of clubs in the mid west that have indoor carpet - Crystal lake Tennis Center west of Chicago (i think its called The Racquet Club at Crystal lake now) used to have 8 indoor carpet courts - we moved away 13 yrs ago so im not sure if thats changed.

Each carpet is different and you can have slower higher bouncing carpet based on the thickness and the texture of the material thats laid out. yes most often it was fast but ive seen pretty slow indoor courts - also if the carpet is laid down right over cement its can be hard and fast - if over a layer of padding or a soft surface it plays slower.

Looked it up out of curiosity. Sounds like a very nice facility, even with Clay Courts (this has 90% convinced me to take a trip already), but it looks like cushioned indoor hardcourts now. But thanks for the recommendation, I'll be looking into it for sure.

I think, this was the fastest indoor carpet that ever existed, you can hear from commentators where Pete said it was faster than grass.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkKwClRus74

I would love to see just one tournament today with that really fast court and balls. It would be just so much fun (and different to anything you see today).

And it is so annoying to me how easily the commentators said in that match (and in many other matches throught out 1997 ) that Sampras possibly was "the best tennis player ever" as if something like that could be said that easily.

Always trying to hype the present tennis stars and totally disrespecting amazing champions from the past.

They did it with Sampras, they are doing it with Federer and Nadal, and they will do it no doubt with the stars of the following generation.

Wow, seriously, when you see the bounces on that court (how low and how the ball skids), you realize it is just like a completely different sport.

It may have been even faster than 90s grass.

You are right they don't play on it anymore but it being too fast wasn't the reason. It was because a fair number of injuries happened on that surface.

Re. Speed - tennis is far too slow now. Tennis really needs to look at hard court speeds to speed them up so we can get back to some more balance on the tennis calendar - rather than the current situation of slow and 'not quite as slow' courts being the only options.

Can you imagine Nadal against Djokovic in a court like that (of Grand Slam Cup 1997) ?

Would they serve-and-volley sometimes?

I think they still would play from the back of the court, but I'd say Djokovic would be favoured to win against Nadal in that court (Djokovic actually can blast very flat forehand winners in spite of his western forehand grip).

It would be funny to watch it, though I bet Nadal would say something like: "No, no, no, you can not do that!, you can not end the points only after two shots, Nole, no, no, no. What about our endless rallies of more than 50 shots?, No, no, you are very bad, Nole, no?, you can not do that, how come you blast a flat forehand winner after only two shots in the point?, don't you know that I can not retrieve those winners in this court? This is not REAL tennis, Nole, I am not playing with you again, you know?, I am going to look for my friend Albert Montanes or better Ramirez Hidalgo, they hit topspin back to me, not too hard, once and again, so we can play 100-shots-rallies, real tennis, you know?"

It would be great to see them, Novak would destroy Nadal on courts like these.Just look at Cincinnati '08 &'09 when they played, and cincy is much slower than this, and it's outdoors of course.I think it's myth made by some people that Novak play poor in faster conditions, I think it's untrue. He never had a chance to play on this ultra fast courts.I'm sure he would adjust, mixing his game and playing more aggressive. He won against Roger in Basel in Dubai, ok it's outdoors, and on many occasions he proved that when he's in good form that he's a great fast hardcourt player:):)
