Ferrer tribute

This guy had nothing going into the SF. No energy, no belief, no history, nothing. He didn't fake some injury to get out of the spotlight and save himself the humiliation, however. He is a real pro and in my eyes one of the ouststanding role models in today's game.

Agreed, a really likable and dedicated guy, just one who lacks the natural talent to win a major.

Were I a scheming professor I'd like to have melded Ferrer with Rios or Safin to create a 20-major Frankenchamp.

Agreed. He has had the misfortune to play in the same era as 3 of the greatest and most consistent tennis players the world has ever seen. They are like a solid, granite wall against all the hopes and expectations of the lower-ranked players. Ferrer, the most consistent of them all, has been their chief victim. Had he been lucky enough to play in a weaker era he would probably have at least one Major and a few more Masters titles under his belt by now.

Unfortunately for Ferrer, he has no killer shot that he can reliably use to get points. Consequently, he grinds out matches in the early part of GS tournaments and then loses in the quarters or semis to someone who does have a killer shot or two.

He has a lot of grit and mental toughness, but it is frustrating to see him play Novak. I wish he would try a different strategy.

I don't see any reason to sugarcoat Ferrer's beatdown. Harrison, Stepanek, Chardy, Simon etc. all took beatings from top tennis players and did not pull sleazy MTOs or make excuses. I guess they deserve a tribute thread as well.

Well,Simon WAS tired. He did not act like he was going to win against Murray if he was fit. He said he just wanted to make a better account of himself out there. Murray even acknowledged that he knew his opponent was suffering. Is it a crime for a guy to say that he could not perform his best? Seriously, If player was suffering from stage IV cancer during a match, I bet people on this forum will accuse him of making excuses if he mentioned it in a presser. :-|

I hear you, but Rios had so much talent, it was just wasted. With Ferrer's physical dedication and mental strength I reckon Rios would've been have been a multi-major guy. Since he lacked this though, he won what he deserved- zilch.

And he's one of the nicest guy on the tour. He doesn't complain, get angry, and handles countless of tough losses nicely(I wish Nadal was like him). I feel bad for him, he doesn't have any fire power because of being undersize as a tennis player to compete against the big boys.

Ferrer is the current generation Michael Chang. All wheels and no major cannons.
Chang got lucky in '89 because of Edberg's mental weakness (an attribute which he corrected as shown in USO 91/92)

Ferrer fights tooth and nail until slam semis and then goes awol. I really wish he let other people take his spot if he's gonna do that. Ferrer's name has become synonymous with: who's gonna get a free pass to the final? Not cool. For a guy ranked so high, he's too much of a journeyman and he lacks ambition. Typical that the only master title he won was the one where all top players were out. Ferrer is the classic minor league guy.

Well Del Potro, Berdych, and Tsonga have all been owned by Ferrer for the past 2 years and had far inferior results, so who do you propose should be in his position?

Let Ferrer make as many semis as he wants. He hadn't won a shield until last year when everyone dropped out or got kicked out early.

Who knows...he gets a once in a lifetime where a couple players get knocked out early, and he gets Del Potro in the semis. Be a cinch from there.

He's had a hell of a 2013 already though. 2 semifinals and a tourney win. For where his talent level is, #4 might as well be top player in the world.

Delpo has won a slam. Berd and Tsonga have made slam finals. All 3 of these guys have more talent than Ferrer (NOT more consistency that's true but that's a different debate). Ferrer has achieved his ranking by winning 250 and 500 events (6 of them last year). That's why I'm saying he dominates the minor leagues. The guy who should be #4 obviously is Nadal. And with a little luck he will be soon.

Don't make it all about Novak. Ferrer has never been a contender in slams. That doesn't mean in 2013 only, that means in general. That's the huge difference between Ferrer and guys like Djoko, Murray, Nadal, Fed.

Wrong. Nadal and Djoko are my 2 favorite players and I'm cheering for Novak to 3peat. I still want to see good matches in general. If there's anything I'm pissed at, it is Almagro giving the match to Ferrer when he was playing so much better in the quarter. I don't like Ferrer's mentality. He will say things like: I know I'm not as good as the top players. That's a form of resignation/abdication. He lacks ambition imo.

By looking at his face at any point in the match without seeing the scoreline, you'd think he was in a tight fifth set about to serve for the match.

Ferrer deserves all the credit he gets. Novak is just the worst possible match up for him by a mile. Federer (to a lesser extent) or Murray would have had to go 4 sets to beat Ferrer today. It's just a match-ups issue. That doesn't mean Djokovic will win the final. It just means Ferrer can't beat him. And he knows it!

I think Ferrer is a great player. It's just unfortunate he's peaking in such at such a time that is ridiculously top heavy with talent. Right now I think it's clear that he's not on the level of Novak, Rafa, Fed and Murray. However I think it's just as clear that he's a step ahead of Tsonga, Berdych etc.

I like Ferru, but I hate seeing him in semi's of slams. He always always get completely destroyed the top guys to the point of it looking like a practice session for them. Fed is like 100-0 against him, I think he beat an injured Rafa once out of 100 tries and Nole makes him like like he is a ball kid stepping in.

Yes and no. The top guys are much more fearful of meeting Berdych and Tsonga in the slams than they are Ferrer. Those guys have the potential to actually take the top 4 out. On a week-in-week out basis Ferrer the the much more consistent player.

I agree that they do have the shots which could give them a puncher's chance but that still rarely (rarely) happens. Therefore year-round, Ferrer is still in between in those two groups.

Actually both Berdych and Tsonga have won 1 masters event like Ferrer. You know what's interesting? Ferrer, Tsonga, and Berdych all won their one and only masters event at Paris indoors.

I'm confused as to what "no history" means. I am fairly certain Ferrer has existed in space/time before this match.

He is a great pro and deserves all the respect in the world. One of my favorite players on tour but he's just not going to win alot of matches against guys like the top 4 who do everything he does plus the power.

Isn't it funny. I guess the top players are usually kind of checked out and looking toward the WTF at that point. A lot of random guys have won it the last few years. Grosjean and Henman won it.
