Yeah, I actually left out the most important part for Nadal. His movement was obviously subpar. It should come around, but it's hard to say if it will be as good as it was pre layoff.

Agreed. And it's not just his movement -- it's his speed as well. If he's going to stay camped 12 feet behind the baseline he'd better be fast, which he's not. If that doesn't improve -- and drastically -- the big boys will tear him to shreds.

And nothing would make you squee with delight more.

Finally have time to watch the match now. It's just so nice to see Nadal playing. Seems like starting at these small tournaments rather than jumping right into the AO was a very smart move. I hope he's able to put all the pieces together and get back to 100% soon. Watching tennis is so much better when all the top guys are at their best.

Well, Monaco lost today so if Nadal is going to lose to anyone in this tournament it won't be him. Lol.

Yep and I don't see anyoneelse beating him

I agree. I am watching the match again right now and he is playing worse than I first thought. Everything is dropping short, he's slow, he defensive, he's not moving side to side very well, and he looks terrified to be out there. Not a very promising start at all.

So you're basically in agreement with the guy you got mad with because he said the way he played he would lose to better players than his first round opponent? You go on about how Nadal is playing crap and going to get beaten, but then someone else says he's playing well below par and is going to get beaten unless he improves, and you get annoyed. You get annoyed with people who agree with you

You should be boosom buddies with this poster - both questioning his ability to beat players like Chardy, or anyone in the top 100. You're peas in a pod. In fact if anything he's giving Nadal more credit, he at least said if he was 80% it would be a walk in the park. How many times have you disagreed with me when I said Nadal would kill everyone on clay not even playing his best?

And the dude hasn't played a match in 8 months, what do you expect from him?

His movement and his accuracy are both needing work. I though he was slow out to his left, too. Since Nadal's entire game revolves around how well he moves, he has to drastically improve it if he wants to win titles and beat the top guys again. Otherwise, it's lights out.

Oh comon Clarky its his first match in 8 months and he boned del Bonis (no pun intended) in straight sets, totally destroying him after the first few games (and this guy was supposed to be a talented up and comer too). I think he should be fine by the end of the Golden Swing.

I hope you're right, but I am not getting my hopes up at all.

I can tell, its really hard to talk some sense in any fan.

Yeah it's not like you were saying Nadal normally played badly... Don't get me wrong, personally I do think you're exaggerating how out of sorts Nadal is, though I only managed to see a bit of the match. He's playing better than a top 100 guy and will win this event imo. But Clarky can't really call you out on going a bit overboard on the matter because she does it more than anyone.

Of course he has the shots but he didn't run the balls as he normally does, his court coverage was less than average for what he normally does. I think either his knees hurt or he is afraid to get injured more, which is normal for a player coming from an injury like his. I dont know how to say it in english, in spanish is "contrapie", the thing is whenever the ball was hit against where he was running it was difficult for him to get to the ball and he lost most of those points, he even complain about the floor a few times, but i think it was just him not being confident enough.

Why use all that energy in his first match back, anyway? He has to ease himself back into form.

Who will win?

You have no right to be disrespectful about anyone who has the guts to compete in high level tennis. Have you any ideal what it is like to play tennis at all? You obviously have no idea of what the game is all about. His name is Federico Delbonis and he played a very good game

At 60% he will win Viña del Mar and Sao Paulo. And at 80% he will win Acapulco. He wont drop a set in the three tournaments,
And at 90% he will dismantle Lance Djokovic, Candy Murray and ******* at Roland Garros.

And you know it.

What does 60 % even mean in a tennis context?
Does he only run at 60 % speed?
Does he only hit at 60 % speed?

Absolutely no. If he did, even the juniors would beat him.

Imagine Usain Bolt running at 60 %. That means he runs at 17-18 seconds or so instead of 9,5-10.

It doesn't make sense to say he's playing at 60 % without qualifying it. I for one can't see an instance where it would be true and he would be anywhere near victory.

I didn't see the match but I just have one hope. I don't care if Nadal wins or loses, but I hope he took the 7 months off to find a pair of underpants which fit him and don't disappear up his jacksey so he has to fish 'em out every point!

Yes and no, nadal at 60% is as good as a 100/15 player as I said before, and a junior wouldn't beat him, at least 95% of them, maybe one in a lucky match, As I said before he has the strokes he is just not physically fit which in today tennis makes you not as good as the top players.

Otherwise, if he is soooooooo good by what he played yesterday why he didn't play AO? because he would be out in first or second round, so get your thoughts together, put your fanaticism aside and you know I'm telling the truth. He is playing chile, brasil and mexico because he is not 100% and wants to start slow. I thought he was going to be around 80 to 90% and only have to adjust small things but he has a long way to come back to his 100%. Maybe tomorrow he will play way better, who knows?

why did you expect rafa to be 90%? 90% Rafa can win RG and clay masters if he avoids novak...you thought he'd be playing grand slam tennis in his first match? strange expectations

nice diagnosis doctor...reasoned explanation really won't work in the end here however...the patient will not take direction and the disease is far too pronounced...better to let it atrophy and die while enjoying the process along the way....some sickness is beautiful in the darkest sense

Agree. Delbonis is way better than anyone who posts here. have some respect.

And Rafa was just awesome :)
Gave us a little scare at the beginning, but got himself together.

He obviously can play better than this, but it was his first match after 7 months.

Nobody outside the top 30 would beat Nadal the way he played today.

His movement looked a bit wary and definitely has a way to go, before it's where it used to be.

Nadal did leak some errors with the forehand, in trying to establish his range. But he also had a lot of great shots and played some well constructed points. He served great when he 'needed to'. His backhand was no worse than usual and did actually hit through it, more than usual.

In conclusion a very solid effort. Especially if you consider he hasn't played a singles match in 7 months. How his knees hold up and how he gets his movement up to speed again (if he's able to), is what's going to be interesting to see the coming weeks.

I can sign this comment. he's on the right way back, but there is still a lot to do to win RG again. I still doubt it.

Chardy won. Garin is out.

It's still a memorable tournament, though. Rafa is back. :)

He also played singles and doubles on Friday. He will only play singles today. At pm. Who thinks it's a good idea to play a tennis match so late?.

Are you seeing his next match?

I did :), both of them on Friday.

OMG, are you there?

Where are our pictures???

(P.S. I understood Rafa's match with Dani, as he calls him, got moved up to 6p. I'm not sure why they didn't do the same for this one, especially since it's a semi. What are they going to try to do -- play the final at midnight?)
