Love Yonex Super Grap.. I only use the Black ones ...
except now the store I get them don't have them at this time.. and don't want to pay 5 bucks for shipping :( ...
so I'm looking for similar (even better) alternatives to Yonex Super Grap from those who love Yonex Super Grap

Solinco Wonder is a good alternative, but so far I've only been able to find it in white. Wilson pro perforated is also a great grip, but somewhat different than the Yonex.

I haven't found a good replacement for Supergrap.. I also use the black. Here's what I found

Some are too tacky
Some are too thick
Some are too short

Think of this... the money you'll spend experimenting on an alternative could be more than the shipping cost of $5.

Even better, make the investment and buy a couple of 30 grip packs and a few other knick-knacks to get to free shipping at TW. Price isn't going down and they will last forever.

I love Supergrap except for the fact that it gets a little slippery when wet in the humid Florida summer. So I've switched to Dunlop Viper Dry because it works better in the summer. Viper Dry is a little thicker and the feel is slightly more rubbery.

You'll probably get a lot of people who recommend Wilson Pro. It does feel similar to Supergrap, but it's the worst grip when it's hot and humid. When I used it, my racquet flew off my hand too often in the summer.

Ramon... gets sticky here in NC as well... Have you ever tried the grip "creams" in conjunction with the overgrips? Really makes a world of difference when you cannot keep your grips/hands dry.

The best way to handle moisture management on your hands is to bring plenty of wrist bands and change them often.

I buy them in bags of 30.

I also use a small hand towel for those days when things get humid. Works better for me than a wet wristband.

You could just buy $75 in super grap and get free shipping ;) .......

(or super grap + other tennis goods equaling $75 and get free shipping.)

Interested to hear more about the creams. I use a rosin bag sometimes, it's OK, but not perfect.

Which one do you use? I think I've seen a Prince one...

I've used this one... Mission Power Grip. I believe it's very comparable to the Prince. Best way to describe it is "liquid chalk".

Actually I've tried rosin and I also tried the one by Prince. The rosin didn't do much, but the Prince stuff was good. I agree that if you have a good dry hand cream and a towel, it makes a big difference, but with Viper Dry I can go without having to put that stuff on during court changes.

Ramon, is Viper Dry the elusive tacky overgrip that actually absorbs and stays tacky even when sweating? The holy grail of over grips?

Well, for me it's pretty close. Other posters here said it wasn't good at absorbing and others didn't like the feel. Apparently, no overgrip is perfect for everyone.

I did not care for the Viper Dry. Still using the Supergrap and I've tried most of the overgrips out there at this point. There are still a few that I need to give a whirl though.

Well, I had to place an order for some shoes for the wife, so to get myself to $75 I added a couple grips:

  • Volkl V Dry
  • Dunlop Viper Dry

I'm one sweaty guy, and have used Wilson Pro, Supergrap & Gamma Supreme in the past. All do well indoors, but outside in the heat & humidity, all get slippery for me (I go through 3-4 wristbands in a match). Tournagrip is the only one that doesn't so far, but it's also only good for 1 match.

I'll let you know how they do.

He is not kidding about the sweat. I saw him fill up three 1.5L bottles of water when we played yesterday! I only polished off a 1.5L bottle plus a 32 ounce Gatorade. :)

Look forward to hearing how these work for you. Tourna is the only thing that keeps my hands dry too, but I much, much prefer a tacky feel. Viper Dry sounds like it might be the ticket.

I have been experimenting with gauze tape over tourna and that actually works quite well. The waxed gauze stays tacky even when wet and also funnels or wicks the sweat away from your hand. Downside is that it's rather rough and really doesn't last that long. (The wax starts to "bead up" at places on the grip where friction forces are highest.)

Thanks Ramon. Yeah, its weird how a product can be just right for one guy and lousy for another. But you're definitely not alone in liking Viper Dry: http://www.tennis-warehouse.com/feedback-DVDO.html I'll definitely give it a try. Bummer that I just received a TW package with various grips last week. Will have to wait awhile before ordering more, lest I incur the wrath of the domestic overlord.

I actually prefer no over grip, and one pleasant surprise from this box was Wilson's Sponge Grip. Pretty old school grip, I think, but it's the first tacky raplacement grip that I've tried that actually feels more tacky, rather than less, when my hand has gotten a little sweaty. I haven't played with it in truly hot and humid conditions though.

Super Grap vs. Viper Dry

I have both of these on my racquets. I find them both to be very good and I could switch from racquet to racquet without thinking about the grip. The Super Grap is more cusioned and doesn't transmit as much feel or feedback. That is to say, the Viper Dry is a thicker, more solid material with a more raw feel. For tackiness, they differ but both perform well. Super Grap has a nice grippy feel at the outset, but it doesn't last as long as Viper Dry. After that, Super Grap has a velvety texture that is playable, but not as secure. Viper Dry has a moderately sticky sort of tackiness that lasts and lasts. It's been on two of my racquets for a long time and still doesn't need replacement. I think a deciding factor will be the thinness of the Super Grap vs. the thickness of the Viper Dry. But the difference here is not great.

Tourna (and Tourna clones) seem to be the only overgrips out there that perform "better when wet". I don't like the lack of durability, and I prefer the feel of a slightly rubbery grip. I loved Wilson Pro until the racquet started flying off my hands repeatedly in the summer. Thicker grips like Prince Resi Pro worked better in the summer but it gave me blisters because of the ridges that form at the overlaps. Head Xtremesoft is super-thin, but it performs about as badly as Wilson Pro in the summer. Yonex Supergrap is good, but to me it's basically an improved Wilson Pro that can still use improvement in staying dry. Viper Dry seems to be the best compromise for me. I'll keep looking for something better, perhaps something that stays even dryer, but so far I'm pretty happy with it. White and black seem to perform equally well. I'm partial to the black because it hides dirt.

I noticed that one of the reviewers mentioned that Viper Dry slips off the handle. I will admit that I did experience that one time. I looked down and noticed gaps and eventually the over grip unraveled, and I had to reapply it. That never happened to me with Wilson Pro or Supergrap. However, it's easily addressed. You just have to make sure there is sufficient overlap (just 1/8" is all) and that you wrap it very tightly. If you can do that, you won't have problems with the grip slipping off the handle.

So I've had an opportunity to use the Dunlop Viper Dry, and I'm not entirely impressed, however, it does have some good qualities.

Initial feel is on the mild side for tackiness. It's not like Wilson Pro or Supergrap, but it does have a bit of tack to it.

For the first match it was OK. It doesn't stay entirely 'dry', but the racquet wasn't slipping in my hand either. What was weird was the 2nd time I pulled it from the bag, it felt much tackier than the 1st time.

I was impressed with how it held for the first set, but then it started to get slippery. But here's the thing: It was tacky at the beginning of the game, semi-tacky middle of the game, about to slip out of my hand by the end of the game.

On the changeover, I'd consider re-gripping, but decide to give it a go once more. And again, tack at the beginning, semi-slippery, then I'm about to lose the racquet. I guess it 'recovers' well if given the time, but the volume of sweat pouring off my body is just too much for it.

Giving the Volkl V Dry a shot now.

That's not too surprising. It does sound like you sweat more than me, and when it gets really humid, I do notice that Viper Dry does get a little moist, but the severity is not as bad as Supergrap. It's the best overall for me so far, but if there's anything else worth trying, I'll give it a go. I'll be interested in hearing how the Volkyl V Dry performs.

Ramon, which tacky grip like yonex stays tacky in hot humid sweaty condidions.

Apparently none so far! Out of all I tested Viper Dry is the driest for me. It can still get wet, but for me it stays drier than Supergrap. I only sweat a moderate amount.

I know, with all the techknowledge they have today, they still can't invent a grip that stays Tacky and Dry on humid hot day.

I tried Tourna XL today for the first time in several years. Just as I remembered, even though there is no tacky feel, it's not slippery either. It was a very humid day. I looked down a few times and noticed sometimes that half the grip was dark blue instead of light blue because of moisture. Still, the grip didn't slip. It also didn't take much time to towel off the moisture and get back to a dry grip.

However, I think I've also been spoiled by other overgrips. There were certain benefits from them that I missed. For me, there seemed to be a loss of feel with Tourna, probably due to its thickness and lack of tack. I noticed that the bevels were more rounded too.

I'll keep experimenting with Tourna while the weather is like this. Maybe I'll change my mind, but for now I think Viper Dry is still my favorite. Toweling off more often and using drying agents when it's extremely humid are small issues compared to the tackiness and feel I get from Viper Dry. In humid conditions, it's not like Tourna, but it still deals with moisture better than other tacky grips I've tried.

1. Slightly off, slightly on topic question - I seem to recall that many years ago RSI magazine/USRSA engineered a play test for OGs. I seem to recall that Yonex Supergrap was the most favored, but I cannot find the article. My online searching skills are usually pretty good, but I am coming up empty on finding a link. Did I imagine this playtest occuring? Anybody else remember it or know where to find the article?

2. Suggestion for folks on the search for the solution to slippery grips in humid conditions - I recommend giving the Prince Grip Enhancer a try. It's a chalky cream that you rub onto your hands like a lotion. Yes, sweat is a big part of the equation, but another factor is the little bit of oil that your hands always have, that really makes the grip extra slippery. Your hands always have a very thin layer of natural oil on them. Touch your fingertips to your sunglasses and look at the lenses to evidence that fact. The Prince Grip enhancer contains Alcohol, it's actually the main ingredient with some silica to create a paste like structure. Just a nickle sized dab of the stuff, dries your hands instantly, and more importantly, removes that natural oil too. Does not make your hands sticky, just very dry, very quickly. It's a great way to get through those 3rd set desperation-perspiration-situations when toweling off just isn't working any more, and you are thinking about re-gripping on a change over, or switching racquets altogether. I have a dubs partner who uses it before every match. I've tried that too, but for my tack preference, that actually dries my hands out too much. I prefer to carry it with me and dab it on whenever needed. Seems like we focus quite a bit on about the level of tack and dryness on our grips, but we don't often consider the level of tack and dryness of our own skin to start with.

That was the white Viper Dry that I was commenting on. I got the black ones a few days ago. I just put a black one on a racquet and it had a much stickier feel than the white. I like the white one much better, unless the black loses some stickiness before I play next.

The black Viper Dry did lose the stickiness overnight. It became very tacky instead, without use. I tried it out today, but a nagging injury got the better of me. It's a very nice overgrip, although the white one is a little thicker, which is nice. The white is very durable for an overgrip. It remains to be seen how durable the black will be. The high tac of the black may be the answer to my wrist strain.
