Stanislas Wawrinka (SUI) [9] vs. Tomas Berdych (CZE) [5]

This one deserves its own thread.

This is my most anticipated match for the day. I am a great fan of Wawrinka's one-hand backhand. I feel that it is time for him to up his game and go up the rankings. He has the talent and stamina but does he have the fortitude and mental grit to pull this minor upset?

Berdych has been good mentally this tournament and had an easy previous match. Wawrinka has had to work a little harder. I haven't seen any of Warinka's matches and only saw the highlights of one of Berdych's matches (ESPN replay has been terrible this US Open) so I don't know how he's hitting but he didn't seem to have too tough a time with Baghdatis so he must be playing quite well. It's still pretty humid in New England and the humidity should clear out for tomorrow but at least the temps for this match should be in the 70s. I'm watching the Serena match until the doubles finish and will then switch back and forth.

I like both players.

Starting now I think. I saw the names up in the 5-display inset at the US Open sight.

They're warming up. Still watching the Williams match.

Interesting the way Wawrinka backed way up on the high kicker to the backhand. He was near the baseline, then backed way up to hit his big looping backhand.

He's only up a break. Wawrinka looked like he dropped his intensity a little on his third service game and that was enough to lose him the game.

Berdych is hitting the ball really cleanly.

Wawrinka put up an effort, but Berdych closed out the first set. Missed most of it, Berdych just the sharper guy so far I take it.

There's no Murray/Istomin thread. I guess the match is a foregone conclusion.

Yep, Istomin to beat the Muzz like a drum . Create a thread if you like to document the beatdown.

Stanford has awoken to start this 2nd set, Berdych facing 15-30.

Make that two break points.

Stan looking good or what ?

He's looking good, as always, but also playing well so far in this second set. Only 3 games though, has to keep it up.

Edit: Another break for Stan lol, about to hand out a bagel?

Wawrinka hasn't made a single error in the 2nd set, Berdych's made 8. Hard to beat that!

Berdych's first serve is only 50% this set too! Really bad. These are two things Tomas needs to improve on to be competitive in the 3rd.

Is the Berdman not feeling well?
Or is Stan the Man just playing just that well?

As is often the case with these things, a little of both. Berdych's getting less than 50% of his first serves in, hard to win like that, but Stan's taking advantage of it and played a great set.

Berd is so slow. If he actually ever went to the gym and did stuff other than lift with weights with his arm (not that he's very strong in his arm either) than he'd be an all-time great.

Wow. That was a big spill.

Replay shows that he knows how to fall without hurting himself.

Do you two go to the same gym lol? I think Tomas is fairly fast for a guy his size, always room for improvement though.

Seems Stan has changed into black as a sign of grieving for Berdych's QF hopes. Seems a little premature, but I gotta appreciate the confidence.

Edit: Seems Tomas will be broken again. Still having trouble getting his first serve in.

Berdych moves better than both Isner and Raonic. He moves quite well for a big guy.

As far as strength goes, I'd suggest leading your racquet up to 13+ ounces and 390 swingweight and trying to hit a few serves.

Berdych finally started getting some first serves in to save the break pts and then Stan got a lucky netcord at deuce. Tomas goes back to his terrible serving accuracy and gets broken. Might just be Stan's night.

If Tomas could get more than half of his first serves in we might have a match, instead he might just get broken again.

Stan is playing amazing lately. A lot of power on his serve and groundstrokes, great variety, showing good skill at the net too. Throws in some serve and volleys as well.

Damn it. Come on, Berdman.

Berdych has picked up his game and rediscovered the first serve, but I'm afraid it's too late for this 3rd set.

For certain, he's more than earned his top 10 ranking, imo.

Looked around in the forums and found that he plays at 350 grams unstrung. Basically the same static weight as Berdych.

I had a look at a picture of his tgk238s when he was with Head and it looks like at least one layer of lead tape under the caps from 8:00 to 4:00. I'd guess that it was two based on the static weight. I don't recall seeing any information on his Yonex frames but I'd imagine that the specs are similar. Basically your big-basher racquet.
