Murmur of the Heart, Au Revoir Les Enfants, Elevator to the Gallows, and My Dinner with Andre. He's pretty much one of the greatest and most overlooked filmmakers in cinema. By far France's best filmmaker, too. Extremely versatile with a true eye for humanity and honesty in his works.
Saw My Dinner with Andre last night. Very interesting and extremely well made.

What is your opinion of Truffaut ? And talking of French directors how do you like Bresson ?

It's a masterpiece, and one of the greatest written films of all time.

Truffaut is interesting, but there's a few films of his that I have distinctive distaste for, Stolen Kisses being one of them. The 400 Blows is probably his best film, as cliche as that sounds. It's a shame he died at a relatively young age, though.

Bresson is great. I'd rank him alongside Bergman as one of the best existential filmmakers in world cinema. A Man Escaped and Mouchette are harrowing masterworks.

In terms of French cinema, though, I'm not a huge fan. When looking at instrumental film movements and periods, the French New Wave has never really appealed to me. For starters, I mostly hate the works of Jean-Luc Godard, despite his pioneering role in technical filmmaking. Something like Italian Neorealism is of more interest to me.

But generally, when looking at foreign cinema, it is the Eastern works that I tend to naturally prefer. Japanese cinema, Russian cinema, and, most recently, Indian cinema.

I was let down too. The villain is abysmal.

The plot was kind of obscure. I feel like they just shot a bunch of generic, albeit impressive action scenes and called it a day. Overall, very disappointing, especially considering I think they have one of the best Bonds going right now.

One, Two, Three (1961) - a Billy Wilder comedy set during the Cold War. Funny here and there, but contains every possible anti-Communist cliche there is, and also the blonde secretary always willing to please stereotype. The boy Horst Buccholz is also in Fanny.

Mean Streets - Scorcese, with De Niro. Has great reviews but I've found it quite boring. I still have 30 minutes of it to watch.

^ Thanks for your comments, Elite.

Goodfellas and Casino where, in my opinion, Martin Scorsese's best movies.
Cape Fear and Shutter Island were not bad either.

Scorsese's best film is The King of Comedy, in my opinion. An impeccable companion piece to Taxi Driver, and both a hauntingly tragic yet darkly comic slice of storytelling that holds more relevance today than it did some thirty years ago.

It's always been one of Scorsese's more overlooked films, but I think it's pretty much perfect.

Toss-up between AfterHours, Bad, and The Last Temptation of Christ.
Shutter Island really gave me the creeps and still does. I still can't get over the fact that you could be thinking your world is the real one, whereas it may be totally a figment of one's mind. More so since both my folks are going through dementia. My dad has no idea who we are or where he is, etc etc (ALS).

Last night I saw most of After Hours. I still have 30 mins to go. I really don't understand the point of such movies. It's there in Ebert's greatest. I was quite grossed out by those two guys kissing each other continuously in the bar.

I enjoyed A Man Escaped as well as Diary of a Country Priest and Balthazar. Also, Pickpocket.

Mostly Satyajit Ray at the moment, who is arguably India's most prolific and respected auter, so it makes sense to start with him. I'll also say that I am watching some Iranian cinema at the moment, too - Abbas Kiarostami's Close-Up is sublime filmmaking and just heartbreaking.

One of the best series ever..........you must watch McGoohan's Danger Man (Secret Agent Man in the U.S.) first to get the set up. McGoohan always claimed that there was no connection between the two BUT watching them totally set each other up.

McGoohan was a genius - The Prisoner was his baby and he produced it.

My favorite series of all time. I bought the boxed set, and watched it the last time I was in Australia. Everyone involved in AMC's so-called remake should be shot.

16-Love. I'm in the process of watching it right now. It's a tennis movie that's on tennis channel atm.

Not the best movie I've seen, but hey there aren't many tennis movies, right?

Yes, a movie put together by moneymen relying on tainted, biased and opportunistic sources is a good source of historical knowledge?

And who said you had to be Mother Theresa to do something good, and Mother Theresa wasn't much chop either according to Hitchens.

Watched We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks.

Good movie, which puts to bed the notion that Assange is merely an altruistic hero, and shows him more as an egomaniac (some of whose actions happened to have a positive effect for some), guilty of many of the same traits he claims to despise in others.

Basically the history of humanity all over again.

The back story about Bradley Manning's personal problems and his relationship with the confidant who ended up exposing him is quite interesting.

The HISHE (how it should have ended) is a hilarious youtube channel that spoofs movies and re-does the endings. You guys should check it out if you haven't seen them before. Here's the one for The Avengers for example:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZkqC4Lz8dU

I've watched pretty much every HISHE there is and i agree with you, it's hilarious. District 9 en Pacific Rim come to mind.

Don't know if it's the same channel (think so) but if you like HISHE, you can also watch "Super Hero Cafe". It's mainly superman and batman just talking with other super heroes.

Shadowlands. Anthony Hopkins at the top of his game, with good acting all around and excellent direction from Sir Richard Attenborough. Only movie I will admit to cry to on a consistent basis.

Based on the tragic death of C.S. Lewis' wife shortly after marriage.

rdis10093, Drugstore Cowboy is one wild movie isn't it?

I just watched Man of Steel. I was definitely entertained. I found it to be a interesting and very visual film. The special effects were outstanding I thought, but I don't know what it is, it seemed to be missing that x factor that really gets you intrigued in a plot line. Overall, I thought it was a really good movie. The 1978 movie "Superman" with Christoper Reeve is a classic. That was a fun movie!

I absolutely loved Man of Steel :) It was as good as Superman 1 and 2 for me.

I am half-way through Casino (DeNiro, Pesci, Sharon Stone) and enjoying it.

Better than Goodfellas in my opinion. Found it to be a much more emotionally engaging film, and arguably Scorsese's last masterwork (The Departed is pretty damned close, though).

People were not enthusiastic in general about Shutter Island. I didn't understand why though. I tend to completely forget about 99% of movies I watch within the week because they are crap, but good movies tend o stay with me, and this is one of them.

Loved Shutter Island, saw it in theaters :)

I think it might have been a good movie to watch in the theater, because it's quite dark at times and the soundtrack is quite good (including the storm ambience, and the opening fog horns which were cleverly integrated with the musical score I believe).

The premise of Shutter Island (which is not revealed to the viewer until almost the end) reminds me a bit of another of my favorite movies (Angel Heart, with Mickey Rourke, Charlotte Rampling, Robert de Niro, and Lisa Bonnet, who lost her gig with Bill Cosby after this movie came out because of the extremely steamy and tabboo sex scene in this movie).

Shutter Island is great film but fails to reach masterpiece status in my books. However, it is definitely a testament to Scorsese's versatile directing, as demonstrated he can pull of surrealism quite well.

Godfather III. Not to good.
The first one was 6/10 and the second 5/10.
Not sure what many have liked about these but it was boring at times and took some effort to watch the whole movie.

This was a great little film. Directed with such flare and cogency, much similar to Wright's other two fun flicks, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.

I viewed Buffalo '66 the other night. Personal opinions about Gallo aside, a very impressive piece, with some surprisingly inventive photography, not to mention a fairly nuanced script. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in independent cinema.

The Farmer's Daughter - Loretta Young, Joseph Cotten, Ethel Barrymore.

Enjoyable old movie, simple story, farmer's daughter romance with congressman etc etc. Young won the Oscar for Best Actress.

When I think of surrealism and Scorsese, After Hours comes to mind. What a great, difficult to classify movie. I suppose it would fall under the genre of nightmarish comedy.

Plot? Haha! This made me laugh.

I aim to please. ;)

Talking of plots and babes, I recently watched Family Plot (Alfred Hitchcock's last movie from 1976), and both the lead actress and Karen Black were quite young and beautiful back then.

The lead actress gives a great performance within a performance as an over the top medium.

Underrated movie, lots of fun!

Cotten looking old, should retire.
Naigara looked good, will win Rogers Cup. Weak plot.

The other day I saw Dirty Harry. Can't say I thought much of it. But maybe in its day it was quite exciting. Anyone here have any views on it ?

CATCHING FIRE. Not to sound like a fangirl-- it was an awesome movie. I loved the first one, though I didn't read the books. And I feel like this is the Empire Strikes Back or Dark Knight of the franchise. It improves on its predecessor in every way: from cleaner cinematography to a deeper exploration of themes involving government retribution and socioeconomics.

The Hunger Games. I'll be off to the cinema before too long to catch the sequel, but first I'll be watching an earlier showing of Saving Mr. Banks.
