Djokovic is a 1-year wonder

Take away a 3 slam stretch from 2011W to 2012 AO, and he's won 3 AO's in his career in which his main rival was injured/sick (fed mono in 08, rafa hamstring in 11, nadal out in 2013). So pitiful that in the past 8 slams he's won 1 of them in the middle of his prime, in comparison, Murray has won 2 of the past 8 slams and even old man federer has managed to win 1 of the past 8 slams. Pitiful player, who essentially had 1 legendary season and a couple fluke years in his career. Where did he go after 2011?

That's an exaggeration, of course.

But, you got to think that something is wrong. He lost too many important matches to Nadal, Fed and Murray since January 2011.

He will win few more slams, but I now started to think that getting to 12 or so will be very difficult. He needs a great run for that to happen.

Is Andre Agassi a 1-year wonder?

In the last 6 slam finals, Djokovic has won only once. He's the Lendl of this generation. Funny how he destroys Nadal in masters, but then proceeds to lose in the tournaments that actually matter

I see the Nadal posse are out in full force with their smear campaign.

Next stop - Fed is a 17 times 1 slam wonder.

Laver, Federer, Sampras, Djokovic are all transitional champs who won their Slams only cause Nadal wasn't there. :)

True but Nadal was always the favourite to win RG. Plus I'm sure Djokovic will maintain his high level of play for the next 3 years and be a prime candidate to win every Slam he enters. He'll probably retire with under 10 Slams. AO is still his best bet. It took god-mode Wawrinka to stop him. The same Wawrinka who made in-form Nadal say "Uncle" in the first set before the back injury.

Regardless of what is motivating it, it's true. Without 2011, Djoker would have the reputation of early Murray - racking up points in Masters and whatnot, failing in slams. Let's say Djoker doesn't win one of the next two slams. If Murray went through a nearly two year period where he won every Masters in sight, but choked in countless slam finals, what would be said about him?

Djokovic can still retire as the Masters record-holder. He can bag 2-3 more Masters this year.

1 of the last 9, actually.

He may have another good year. Or several others. It's a bit pointless to make this kind of threads while a top player is still in his prime or close.

It's not pointless, it's a legitimate concern that he needs to address. If he does address it then good for him, he can prove that there was nothing be to concerned about. Meanwhile, we'll discuss it, seeing as there are days to burn between tournaments etc.

I'll be supporting Nole at Wimbledon after Fed.

Nole was never gonna be a tier 1 great anyway, that ship sailed in 2012. Nole is back to his pre-2011 days, he needs a brand new egg. Where that Serbian doc go?

Yeah, probably.

Still, he's a great player.

Unfortunately for you, the year 2011, did in fact occur.

What if Nadal lost his left arm to a gorrilla in a visit to a zoo.. Then I guess Borg would be the roland garros king and Fed would have 25 slams. See, I can do it too..

Yes, it did. Hence, the title "1 year wonder." No one is denying it happened.

Yes, and my point is there is no reason posing hypotheticals as to if that happened.. because it did. Having it happen in one year doesn't diminish his accomplishment, on the contrary I think it makes it more impressive.

On the other hand it propelled him into a league where he's now being compared to other all-time greats, and to be compared favorably he can't have a losing record in slam finals. The second he entered that league he then proceeded to win only one of the next 9 slams, even though he is winning everything else on tour and is making slam finals left and right.

Are you going to post the same nonsense in every thread about him??
How many times did the GOAT try to beat Nadal at the FO??? And how many times he succeeded?
You are a biased fool.

I agree, I just don't agree the stardom isn't warranted. One of people's main argument for Nadal as GOAT or why Fed isn't is because of their H2H. There H2H is pretty impressive (for Djok) I would say and is pretty telling imo as to the caliber player he is.

Again, I think they compared him to the likes of Aggassi etc because he deserves to be. He still has some things to do before he is imo, but he is certainly in the conversation and well on his way to doing what he has to to be there.

Djokovic has won Slams in four separate years, so I guess he's a four-year wonder.

What on earth?
Djoko has 101 weeks at #1 (2 year ends), 44 titles, 6 slam titles (13 slam finals), 19 master titles, 3 WTF titles, 1 Olympic medal, 1 DC title.

Geez how did he fit all that in 1 season?:-?

It fits into 4 great seasons and a few other good ones.

So Djokovic is a "pitiful player". Bit harsh don't you think? And seeing as you dislike him so much, what's the problem anyway?

since 2011, Djokovic didn't win any slam outside of AO.

Djokovic has won only 1 slam from FO+Wimbledon, the two most respected and important slams in tennis.

Djokovic has won only 2 slams from FO+Wimbledon+USOpen, the three most respected and important slams in tennis.

Same number as Murray.

Nadal has 11 slams from FO+Wimbledon and 13 slams from FO+Wimbledon+USOpen.

Need I say more??

Nadal has had plenty of seasons winning only RG. So what? Winning a slam in a season is a +, it's a positive regardless of which slam.

all I'm saying is that djokovic pulled one of the greatest sesasons of all time in 2011 and other than that season really hasn't replicated the form of an all time great, jesus christ, soon to be 33 year old federer has won as many slams in the past 2 years as novak in the middle of his prime has. It's really befuddling.

I don't really get what you mean... No McEnroe didn't repeat it, but are implying that Djokovic did?

ok im not implying djokovic did repeat 2011 again. im saying no player has ever been able to repeat that kind of year. Djokovic will never do a 2011 again, no chance of that happening

I wonder if Novak is suffering a massive letdown after 2011. Some people win ONE Slam and then go through a pretty miserable period before they learn to deal with it (think Li Na, Stan and even Federer mentioned something like that after winning his first Wimbledon, I believe.) Novak won THREE, so it might just be a humongous case of mental and emotional indigestion.

I have no doubts that Djokovic still has another 4 or 5 Slams left in him once he gets over his current troubles and learns to balance his new attacking game with his natural defensive one. Let's face it, he is not a natural volleyer or net rusher (not necessarily the same thing) nor has he been the aggressive baseliner until recently only, so I believe it's only a matter of time and getting used to working outside his comfort zone, before he starts winning again.

If anything, the way he lost the FO this year must have reinforced the lesson that he needs to be able to end points quicker, especially when he considers his age and the toll playing a grinding, retrieving style is taking on his body.
