what phone for 2014?

I love my notification light. I have it different colors for different types of messages/different people, so when I see it flashing I know who and what it is.

You mean there are other phones ?

Yup. And it turns out these other phones have handy notification lights, don't make stupid noises when you SEND a text, can be turned to silent mode with one hand in the dark if need be, don't require two extra steps to change the time on the alarm clock, and all sorts of neat stuff like that. Check 'em out!

I am surprised you could not figure that my line was a joke. Surely, you don't seriously think i would be unaware that there are other phones!

I don't really use a cell phone, so i am the last person to give advice. I have an iPhone that was forced upon me as a gift. I only use the Nike Running app since the last month. Otherwise it lies around.

Prior to that i had an ancient Nokia 5510 but was considered very anti-social and revolutionary for carrying around an old phone with only a phone in it !

Sounds like a dream… God forbid iphone do even half of this.

If I were a multi-millionaire, I'd pay 22 grand just for a notification light...

It would be a lot easier just to buy a few a couple of cheap Android phones to leave around the home and office so that you'd know when you had a notification.

A multi-millionaire should be able to figure out cost-effective solutions.

Cheaper you mean, not easier.

Or just hire a gaggle of notification "Bunnies".

Yup. "Mr. Heycal, a text came in while you were in the other room. I think it's regarding your skinny jeans order!"

What are we guessing the chances are that iphone 6 will have a meaningful and useful notification light?

I'm guessing there's about a 4% chance it does. Anyone else?

And will no one speak about the cases for phones that only surround the edges and not the backs? Seems like an obvious and brilliant design.

No, easier too.

Having a few million in the bank doesn't mean that you have the engineering, design and hardware/software skills to build a notification light into an existing product. It wouldn't necessarily be easy to pay for someone to do this either.

There have been enough leaked shots of the phone case to state that there won't be notification LEDs. I don't think that it would make sense power-wise to implement it on the screen display.

One thing that I'd like from iOS 8 is widgets. Apple is implementing widgets but only in the Notification screen. I don't want to go to a separate screen to see everything at a glance. Apple's market research says that Android Widgets are not widely used. They are used by power users but the vast majority leave their home screens as they are when they get them.

oh that reminds me. i have a different tone for some people. surely all phones implement that.

i am colorblind so those notification lights would be useless. frustrating, in fact. bad enough, people tend to use red and green a lot on websites (and stop signs) even tho' that's the most prevalent color-blindness.

anyway, i haven't seen this feature, so i cannot honestly comment.

Yeah same for me, different vibrations and patterns for specific people or notifications is such a clever thing.

No doubt i'll get my hands on the new iPhone and trial it for a few weeks, as a big fan of technology i'm looking forward to it, but it's unlikely i'll be converting.

I see in the Led Zeppelin thread that you were recently accused of being "too girlish". This isn't going to help.

I love it because my biggest pet peeve is my phone going off or vibrating and me thinking it's someone I REALLY wanted to text me, and it's something stupid. Now there's no false hope lol. I know if it's a text or email and who it's from without having to pick it up.

So now you can filter out texts from maximagq ! That's a good enough reason to have your cellphone. :D

Widgets are nice, but they are no notification light…

Why? I'd happily settle for any random colored light glowing on my screen to indicate any type of mesage. Further divisions by color would be icing on the cake but hardly crucial.

I think I was accused of liking "girl" bands like the Beatles and the Beach Boys. But speaking of skinny jeans and Zeppelin, you take a look at the pants those guys wear?

That's pretty neat. I know I have had phones that offered this feature before in some fashion, but in my limited experimentation with it I remember being unable to make fine dinstinctions between the vibration patterns. Maybe it's been improved since then.

Does iPhone offer this?

^ No, but the iPhone 6 allows you to configure different aromas based on who is calling. I use 'lavender' for my wife and 'dog fart' for my MIL.

heh heh, just kiddin'.

How's that LG 2 battery holding up, dParis and anyone else who has the phone? Still offering endless battery supply?

My iPhone 4 can barely make sundown, and I don't have high hopes for revolutionary battery in iphone 6.

There's an iPhone 5 battery recall that was announced on Friday. Funny thing is that I was just about to make an appointment to get it replaced and was too busy to go to the Apple Store that day. I found out about the recall from a tech article this weekend. You just put in your serial number to check if your model is one of the affected ones.

In the beginning, my G2's battery life was ridiculously good. After 10 months and installing a small variety of apps and updates, the battery still performs well, but not with the amazing stamina as before.

Anecdotally, yesterday, starting out with a full charge, I put about 3hrs of screen time (@100% brightness), 1hr 30 of talk time, considerable facebooking and web browsing and some light texting and camera work. At the end of the day I had 20% left on the battery. I always leave bluetooth, wifi, led and auto-sync running and usually have my screen brightness set at 65%.

When I forget to close out other apps (which I do often), I lose battery faster, but the biggest battery drain by far is GPS/navigation, followed by streaming video and music. Surprisingly fast battery drain relative to the other activities.

I really don't have much to compare the G2's battery to, but I have a feeling I'm now spoiled with battery life. I do know that it blows away my wife's i4s.

I brought my iPhone 5 in for the battery and sleep/wake switch recalls. They took mine and gave me a loaner so I'm not without a phone. I restored my stuff from iTunes and I'm good to go outside of having to re-enter a bunch of passwords. Do other phone companies give you a loaner if you have to leave your device for service?

He's the CNET Editor (maybe senior editor now) for the weekly segment: The Apple Byte. He also does a weekly segment called Googleicious. He talks about rumors, reviews products and generally takes about the worlds of Apple and Google.

He has a pretty youthful approach to presentation but he does serious and fun journalism.

I hadn't heard the "legendary" part but that term may have been added because he's been doing the videos for so long. You have to watch him at least once to get his schtick.

Watched him twice. Both thanks to fedace, who assigned him "legendary" status - and we know fedace is one not prone to hyperbole.

Nobody knows when this stuff is coming out. The announcement is September 9 but the actual release date is up to Apple. The speculation is September 19 for the 4.7 model. The 5.5 model date is even murkier. I think that the pragmatic thing to do would be to see what they say on September 9 and then make a decision. One thing that I do know is that there isn't much additional room in my running shorts pockets to hold something that much bigger than an iPhone 5. Yes, I know that one solution would be to replace all of my running shorts but most running shorts don't have usable pockets to begin with.

was hoping they make the PHABLET into 5.8 inch model to make it bigger than Samsung Note 3.

Samsung is making smaller phones to compete with Apple.

samsung-galaxy-s5-mwc-2014.jpg

I lined up my hand and fingers on my iPhone 5 to compare with that picture. Samsung's 4.7 inch Alpha is probably pretty close to the size of the iPhone 6 (4.7) and it looks bigger as my pointing finger easily fits on the side of the iPhone 5 while it doesn't in this picture. So going from 4.0 to 4.7 would make things a little different with holding (and probably typing) with one hand.

i've always been a fan of the shape of Samsung phones, the screen size is more natural imo. Apple seem to be set in their ways with the thin, but longer approach. Maybe it's better for typing with one hand, like you say, but i've always found it weird.

Next Monday (the 8th) is my two year anniversary of becoming sober, maybe i'll treat myself to the new iPhone to play around with for a few weeks. No doubt they'll retain value so it makes sense.

Any battery left at all at the end of the day is great. I have to charge the iphone 4 i'm using, and my LG Lucid before that, at some point during the day. To be free of battery anxiety is no small thing, so the G2 remains very tempting.

(btw, I think iphone claims there is no need to close apps. Know anything about that?)

Yes, I know that one solution would be to replace all of my running shorts but most running shorts don't have usable pockets to begin with.

Run slower like I do. This way some simple cargo shorts will do, and you can hold your phone, glasses, and even a small bottle of water whilst jogging.

Just seen it, yeah you can do all of those things. The only thing i'm not sure about is the podcasts as i'm not a listener of those ones you mentioned, i'm sure you can though.

The only ones i listen to are the Joe Rogan Experience, A State of Trance and Future Sound of Egypt. They all have their own individual apps.

i've just reasearched the podcasts you listened to, yeah you can get them like you do on an iPhone.

Alot of top podcasts also have their own apps these days, they offer things that compliment the show. Quick links to guests they have on the shows, tour dates for music ones etc..

But yeah, if that's too much for you, there's always the old fashioned way :)

What I like most is that I can fast forward or rewind 15 seconds on iphone podcasts, and do so without unlocking phone. I often use this feature, so would want it with any other podcasts.

Yeah that's pretty standard. There's also an app which cuts out all the quiet points and any adverts in a postcast, i've not tried it but people who've used it won't listen to a podcast without it. i'll have to give it a look.

I do podcasts the old fashioned way - download it to PC and upload it to iTunes. The main ones that I listen to have their own iTunes podcasts area but I just do the download thing as sometimes I use an iPod Nano and that wouldn't work on a Nano.
