I'm sad I've never seen this kid play before (luckily missing him beat my favorite player at Wimbledon), but happy to see him for the first time.

This guy is just tooling Robredo - no chump at all.

Go Kyrgios!

This is definitely the best I've ever seen Kyrgios play, you get the feeling he is going to cool down at some point.

I'm not being insecure since I'm not talking about myself lol. I feel bad for you because it is hard to root for a player who never wins (Rendy) and your other favorite has yet another injury that prevents him from attaining GOAT status.

Why feel bad for me, I don't understand. Why is it hard to root for a player who never wins? I root for Lu because I enjoy his style of play, it does not really matter if he wins or not as long as he tries his best.

Sampras had one of the best all-court games of his era. You don't win Wimbledon 7 times if you have only a serve, you obviously have to break somewhere.
You're showing your age - or lack thereof. It was all S&V - and look at the scores - a lot of tiebreak wins.

If he had that vaulted 'all court game' why doesn't he have 2 or 3 French Open titles? There was no Nadal in his era.

I defended his game a page or two ago. Just don't think the rest of his game is that good yet. You have to win 1 tournament before people can talk you up winning a major.

I know you Australians are excited - but calm down. For all we know he'll be double dating with Tomic in the offseason...

Uh, no. His BH was sad. Ditto return of serve. 12 of 14 majors at W and USO - super fast conditions. There was a reason.

Backhands could be weaker then, the tech didnt really make it the backboard game it is now. Pete also didnt show up at AusO a few times. Clay was only won by specialist back then...

What were your predictions and overall thoughts on his match against clay court specialist Garcia Lopez in the first round?

There were plenty of great backhands - Pete just wasn't one of the owners of one. If he was moved around at all that side fell apart.

And his weak Break % shows I'm right about the return of serve.

Clay specialists? Like Agassi? If Sampras was that awesome he would have gotten at least as many as AA.

I am calm, I'm simply saying his ground game is good, I'm not saying it's Djokovic like, just that it's good.

Sampras was supreme on grass and fast hard courts, and he could play at high level on slower hard courts and at Roland Garros in his peak years (93, 94, 96). His era was defined by specialists on different surfaces, and he was excellent on fast courts and solid on slower ones before he started concentrating his efforts on Wimbledon. By your idiotic logic, Agassi would be the only player considered an "all-courter", but Sampras had a much better baseline game than Agassi had a net game. For someone your age, you don't really know much about tennis do you? Sampras has a better all-court game than Djokovic and Nadal. Only Federer is more versatile in today's era.

Let's keep the discussion to Robredo and Kyrgios in this thread. Lu was only mentioned in this thread because Maximagq mentioned it.

Sampras had an all-time great forehand, was an excellent mover, best serve (1st and 2nd combined) package in history, and one of the best net games. His backhand, return of serve, and stamina were a weakness, but he was one of the best examples of an all-court player IN THE 90s STANDARD.

I pray that this kid doesn't turn into another Monfils
And that's the problem with all the Bandwagon Hopping. We just don't know. He may really want to win a ton of majors and do the hard work; he might be happy to drive a Ferrari and have a new blonde every month.

Oh, and he could get hurt. He's never played this much tennis under this kind of pressure.

Nick needs to learn how to volley. He's hit some terrible ones so far. If he gets that down, his attacking game will be even better!

All we can do is wait and find out, I was following him post-open last year, he tends to get small niggling injuries. That's the main concern I have.

Fully agree. People are hyping him up because he beat Nadal at Wimbledon, and we see posters mentioning him so frequently here just like Darcis last year and Rosol the year before. Let the kid win something of significance first.

If any of you guys think Kyrgios is the kind of player that shows up once a year to play well, you guys know nothing about tennis. This kid is disciplined and has great mental fortitude for someone that young. Saving 9 match points against Gasquet and beating one of the best players in history in your first main draw appearance at Wimbledon is an indicator of how tough this kid is. The only concerns I have are his potty mouth and his movement, but he's going to be a contender.

Give me a break. He's a better version of Tsonga (a bit less athletic, but more skilled) with great mental strength.

We just don't know yet if he's mentally strong. He is young with nothing to lose. A bit like AO 2008 Tsonga. Is he a better player of Tsonga? Don't really know yet, Tsonga has beaten Federer at Wimbledon and is no push over.

This is really exciting. I like how Kyrgios is being extremely aggressive coming closer to the net with every shot, and executing great volleys to finish points. He has flare and charisma which is something Raonic, Dimitrov, Nishikori, etc sorely lack. I think Kyrgios is a bit of a ****** (can I say that?) but tennis really needs a guy like him to step it up a bit.

He has the Potential to be a better player, or a player who can reach that level.

It depends on how hard he works though, and he definitely comes across as a guy who wants to be at the top.
