.......... What if I'd been wrong this whole time? What if I couldn't see the forest for the trees? What if I'd been going at this wrong the whole time, what if there was no magic in
nCoded High Modulus Graphite (unlike Basalt of course). What if the magic lied elsewhere?
Friends, I've realized something, in my quest to turn Yoko into a lighter 6.1, I've been blind to what actually makes the 6.1 work so well for me in the first place, the weight!
It's been there all along, right under my nose, I thought that by keeping the 6.1's stats, but lowering them slightly, especially weight, that I'd finally achieve peRFection.
Well, over the years I'd tried exactly that, with several frames, the latest being Yoko. And every time I kept being disappointed by the results. Every time I thought I got it right, out would come the 6.1 to prove me wrong.
And yet I didn't want to quit on Yoko, the feel is too good, the response so predictable and precise, the thin beam and flex addictive, I just needed to unlock her full potential, unleash her inner power somehow.
What I had done so far was tantamount to putting lipstick on a pig, it was cosmetic, superficial, conservative. If I wanted to change Yoko, I knew I had to give her what the 6.1 really brings to the table........ beef (weight). So I went about turning a lipsticked pig into a 355g bull, ready for the market.
Steroids are pretty much just synthetic testosterone, so, if I wanted to profoundly change Yoko, yes, make her more manly, then I knew I'd have to put her on a heavy cycle of steroids, and I did, and the results were................................................... AMAZING!
Recipe for a beefy, f@#k you powered (FYP) Tfight 315 ltd, with incredible feel and a huge and generous sweetspot:
1. Replace leather with good synthetic replacement grip of choice (optional)
2. Inject 15 grams of silicone in the handle (adjust if leather was left on)
3. Add 12 grams of lead at 3&9, using a double layer of 6 inch lead tape on each side.
4. Perform Santeria, sprinkle with basalt to taste.
5. Take to court and blast groundies!
I have to say the end results are amazing. The weight at 3&9 really opens up the string bed, and made a relatively small sweetspot seem very generous. It's also the closest I've ever gotten a frame to play like a 6.1. I guess that makes sense given Wilson's PWS.
The power level went up 2 to 3 notches, definitely in the 6.1's ball park, and the plow and stability are amazing, and even though I could control the power with a full bed of multi, a hybrid, or even a full bed of poly would probably play even better, taming the power and adding a bit of zip.
The feel of the frame becomes so much more pronounced with the added weight. It flexes beautifully around the throat and the cupping effect of the stringbed, or dwell time, was addictive. I hit a couple of droppers from the back of the court that were just magic.
During the session I picked up my 6.1 twice to compare, and both times I put it back down after only a couple of minutes. Lately the 6.1 had been pummeling every contender mercilessly, but this version of Yoko was the first to hold it's ground. It didn't necessarily out class it in terms of raw performance, but the plusher feel and flex make for a much more arm friendly ride.
I really urge any Yoko user to try this mod out. We have to keep in mind that the ltd. is essentially TF's pro stock hairpin, and at a starting SW of ~300, there's no getting around the fact that it needs lots of lead to really shine.
Here's the best part about lead at 3&9 versus lead at 12. I achieved pretty much the same balance, with the same amount of weight in the handle, with 12 grams at 3&9 versus a paltry 5 grams at 12.
Final specs, silicone, lead and og:
355 grams static / 6.5 pts hl / 325-330 SW.
