Roger Federer's Schedule in the Year 2000

First of all let me just say, eat your heart out Dominic Thiem, you have much to learn.

What a schedule from the GOAT scheduler -

Adelaide, Auckland, Australian Open, Davis Cup, Marseille, London, Copenhagen, Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Rome, Hamburg, St Peolten, French Open, Halle, Nottingham, Wimbledon, Gstaad, Davis Cup, Toronto, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, US Open, Olympics, Vienna, Basel, Stuttgart, Lyon, Paris, Stockholm, and just for good measure the River Oaks Houston Invitational Exhibition Tournament on clay in April.

29 tournaments entered, plus 2 separate Davis Cup ties in Switzerland, plus 1 exhibition tournament, played across 30 different cities, 15 different countries. What a globetrotting youngSTAR he was back in the day. Unbelievable schedule!

Oh in case you're wondering, his win-loss for the year was a magnificent 36-30, ZERO Titles from 2 finals.

It took a lot of tournaments for Fed to hit his stride, that's one of the reasons his career numbers are a little low.

But still an interesting post, I didn't know he played that much at that time.

I don't remember much from his early days but back in those days isn't that what journeymen did? Enter as many as possible to make ends meet? What rank was he at in 2000? Unless he was better than 100,this isn't a surprising schedule.

Yeah i was looking through his earlier career and couldn't believe how much he played in 1999,2000, 2001 and 2002.

Well he finished 1999 as No. 64 and 2000 as No. 29, so he probably would have been inside the Top 50 for most of 2000.

That's interesting then... Like @Talker said, probably he wasn't that good to get deeper in the draws so he played a lot.

Yeah, it's not THAT impressive when you see his record, and see the dude was just trying to his best to get some playing time

he played about half as many tournaments in 2005 and played 20 odd more matches.

Actually, even in 2003 he played 23 tournaments, plus 3 separate davis cup ties -

Doha, Sydney, Australian Open, Davis Cup, Marseille, Rotterdam, Dubai, Indian Wells, Miami, Davis Cup, Munich, Rome, Hamburg, French Open, Halle, Wimbledon, Gstaad, Montreal, Cincinnati, US Open, Davis Cup, Vienna, Madrid, Basel, Paris, Masters Cup (Houston) -

So really it wasn't so much he had success because he played less, but rather he started to play less (2004 onwards) because he became successful.

you also have to take into account playing style and conditions, most courts were really fast back then and fed played a good amount of Serve and volley

LMAO, Thiem is ranked no 4 and Fed 29 . So not comparable at all.

Thiem will have close to 30 losses by this year end

Exactly. You have to gain match play, confidence and experience somehow.

Plus, Fed was just an 18-19 year old kid. He hadn't yet gained his proper scheduling ability.

Federer eventually wised up with both his game and his scheduling to maximize his results.

Fed sucked in 2000 so he had to play many tourmaments just to make enough living. Fed wasn't born a tennis genius like Nadal. He worked hard for years as a pro to become better. People kept calling Fed genius and call Nadal a brute, but in reality it was Nadal who was much more gifted since early age.

I don't see it that way at all.

I agree that Nadal was immensely talented, a true prodigy, but those tend to emerge more often on clay really early. There is something about play on clay which is more basic, more simple. It's more about the ability to run all day. You don't want to say that Evert was more talented than Navratilova, but she has earlier success. Of course it's possible for a prodigy to win early on grass - think of Becker - but it seems to happen less frequently.

I'm thinking also of Borg, Wilander, a few others.

I would never say that young Fed was not incredibly talented. I think what Annocone says, that Fed actually had too MANY gifts, is true. He didn't know which stroke to use next, similar to Kyrgios.

What young Nadal had was a 100% solid game plan.

Even now Fed can get sloppy about preparing against low-ranked players he has not faced or has not played in a long time. Nadal never is underprepared. He loses when he loses confidence.
