Attention Talk Tennis Members:

The application period has ended for this playtest. We have notified selected playteters by email.

IMPORTANT: We have 3 gauges (16,17,18) but we are not taking requests for which gauge you will receive. If this is a problem, e.g., 18g is too thin or 16g too thick, please do not apply. Since we are testing for durability, we're happy to welcome string breakers!

Review is due by September 12th

In order to participate and remain in good standing for all upcoming playtests you must post your findings in this thread by the deadline.

Wow. I got picked too. I have used regular v-torque extensively. It will be interesting to see what the difference is.

What is your recommendation for tension, assuming this has any similarity to the v-torque you're familiar with?

I like my Tourna BHB7 strung LOW at 40-42 lbs. But I always get nervous about stringing these test strings so low since it took a number of trials for me to find the tension I liked with BHB7.

I got v-torque 18g in BB Melbourne at 44 mains and 42 crosses (drop weight). I get power and control with that setup.

I checked the volkl website and they have v-torque power rating at 8. However, v-torque Tour power rating is 9.5!!!

I'll wait to see what gauge I get. Then I'll decide on tension.
If it's 18 gauge I'll probably kick it up couple of pounds.
If it is 16g I might string up one of my 16x19/20 sticks.

The Volkl website might be a bit high on the power rating of both strings.. I have tested and played both. I am testing the v-torque Tour 18G... 9.5 is high.

I have mine strung at 50/48 in a PK Q 295. If you are expecting power like Cyclone Tour I would not go that far. While the power is higher than the non Tour... the free power output is average. If you strung your full bed Pure Drive at say 45.. then you might get some impressive power. The PK Q 295 is a tweener /players frame with average power output. As as point of reference, I was a playtester on the Volkl v-torque (non-tour) and did not love it. Found it to dull and unexciting.. plastic feeling... Plus it was not very durable. So far I am liking the Tour version.. but not in love. Consistent and ave power / spin. Control is great with 4 hours of play testing done.

Posted this in an another thread, but more germane to this thread.

In 16g, Cyclone Tour (CT) lasts me about a month in a 16x19 Pure Drive or Prince 16x18 Textreme Warrior 100. 16g V-Torque full bed last about 6-7 sets in he same frames. I tried 16g V-Torque(VT) with Wilson Resolve 17g crosses and the VT shredded the Revolve crosses in less than 2 sets. Switch the crosses to Head Hawk 17g and the V-torque snaps like clockwork in 6-7 sets. No matter what I use to string 16g VT, full bed or with a smooth slick cross, it simply doesn't last like Cyclone Tour 16g. I have been using CT for 3.5 years and ordered over a dozen reels as I now have switched several 4.0 and 4.5 guys to this string to save them money.

17g CT doesn't hold tension and I do not recommend it in any manner. If you gave me a reel, I would donate it. I refuse to string it as it tension maintenance is unacceptable. I have a reel of V-torque 16g and while I like the string, it simply doesn't last like Cyclone and Cyclone Tour. I saw the V-Torque Tour play test within two hours of the post, but have to have shoulder surgery so didn't sign up for the playtest. Furthermore, since they can't guarantee a gauge, I want to compare 16g V-Torque Tour (VTT) to 16g V-Torque and 16g CT and will order a pack of 16g VTT when I am back on the court and do my own play-test.

IMO, it would be worthless to compare 16g VT to 18g VTT, considering just how different 16g CT and 17g CT hold tension.

I read comments from posters on here saying CT doesn't hold tension, but all the posters seem to fail to mention what gauge CT they use. Any post about CT, VT, or VTT without the gauge is worthless to a reader who knows these strings are very gauge dependent.

16G CT held tension well enough for a 4.0C rated USTA player to beat an USTA rated 5.0C player during the Southern Sectionals in Mobile back on 7/28/17. The 4.0 will be bumped to 4.5 soon enough. His frame was strung by me, two weeks before he played the match vs the AL 5.0C player who was playing under his Early Start League 4.5C rating. And FWIW, the SC 4.0C won more games than he lost versus the 4.5C and 5.0C players he faced.

Got mine today White 17g. Strung it in my SuperG10 at 52. I did't measure it before but I ended up with about 4 ft of string left over should be plenty for OS or 18x20 patterns. Not to stiff to the hand but you can really feel the ridges. I'd say easy to string for a poly with about standard poly stretch. Not really lively bouncing the ball on the strings more of a control feel. Probably hit tomorrow.

White 17g installed in iPrestige at 45# CP

felt very soft in hand. Even with the rough structure it was okay to string. Sometimes diff on blocked holes. Will see how it plays later today.

Strung my DR 98+ this morning. I've never played with or strung a twisted string before. Compared to reg V Torque it felt much slicker/slippery. Also when stringing I didn't really feel the edges much. It was pretty easy to string. The coil memory was minimal. Average elasticity I would say. When I was done stringing I could feel the texture of the string more in the frame. Hit with it against a ball machine so more details to come.

Review: Volkl V-Torque Tour String

Hello friends,

Please find my play test review of the Volkl V-Torque Tour string. I received 18G version of the string. I usually prefer the 17G or thicker as I snap thinner gauges. And that is unfortunately what happened during the playtest as well. My string snapped around 4 hour mark during the playtest.

To give a better comparison, I will mostly compare with Volkl Cyclone 17 as that is the string I am mostly using these days. Slight caveat here being that different gauges play differently so it might not really be an apples to apples comparison per se. But it should be enough to give a good idea.

Here is the string I received:

1niqLAL.png

Snapped main after approximately 4 hours of hitting:

ymQ9noX.png

What gauge did you receive?
18G

Tension used for playtest
:

Full bed at 50 lbs.

Regular string set up:

Varies from time to time. My usual go-to string is the Volkl Cyclone, ranging from 50-52 lbs.

Racquet used for test:
Angell Custom TC100

Power:
Power was high for a copoly, IMO. I would rank it medium, towards the middle on the power spectrum. Cyclone 17g that I play with is much lower powered. Not sure if gauge is the culprit here but I was surprised because even the regular 17g V-Torque I have played with in the past was lower powered than this Tour version. Had to considerably adjust my strokes.

Feel:
This string was softer in feel to Volkl Cyclone. Bed felt slick. I could feel the ball better at net and on touch shots too. Plasticky still, yes, but I could definitely feel the ball better as compared to Cyclone. Lively too, for sure. Ball jumped off the bed every time. Slices initially were going long so I had to adjust. Groundstrokes were sailing as well before I made the adjustments but then all was okay. Off-center hits were easy on the arm, much more comfortable than Cyclone.

Spin:
Superb. Ball grab was amazing. Very nice dwell time as well. Cyclone 17 is firmer and more crisp feeling but this had better snapback I felt. I definitely got more spin with this 18 G V-Torque Tour. Great serving too including kick serves and slices. Avg on flat serves.

Comfort:
Slicker string. Was very comfortable on the arm at 50lbs. Definitely more comfortable than Cyclone 17.

Durability
:

I am not a regular 16G string breaker but I do break 18G fast. I broke this string under 4 hour mark in a span of 3 days (see picture above). But with string being 18G, I know it would't last long for me anyway. Because of that, not sure if I should give it bad marks in durability department.

Playability Duration:
No drop in playability for me till I snapped it. Was playing how it should after 4 hour mark. Took about 10 mins to settle in a bit. After that I did not feel any tension loss. Usually thinner gauges in my experience lose tension very quick. Not the case here for me.

Control:
Control was great once I got the hang of it. I could feel the ball really well and bring it down with spin very easily. Initially balls were flying but I adjusted to it. Then, the bigger my swing the more confident I was that it was landing in. Ball trajectory and launch angle both were higher than Cyclone, easily. Net play and volleys were awesome too due to the good feel. Serves were decent too as I mentioned but kick and slice serves were definitely up there.

Recommended tension:
Same (50lbs) range. Maybe even a pound or two tighter for that initial settling in period.

Compare to the string you use most often
:

Softer, more comfortable than Cyclone. Much less durable probably because of the thinner gauge too. Also had much better feel than Cyclone.

List any additional thoughts (optional):
The string snapped unfortunately just when I had started to groove with it. Only played one match, rest was practice hitting.

Stringing was super easy. Did not string myself but was told that there were zero issues. I did enjoy the playtest and wish it hadn't snapped. On the plus side, the review came in super quick! :)

Finally, big thank you to @TW Staff for this playtest opportunity. Would definitely consider this in slightly thicker gauge depending on price point and need at the time.

Got my package of white 16g today. Will string it up this week in my DR98. Thinking probably 50lbs. Maybe 48. I'm usually a SG/Multi guy some trying to balance comfort with power/control. More to come.

Received my string today. 18g
I strung it on the dropweight at 44lbs in BB Melbourne.

It feels a bit less plasticky than v-torque. It definitely feels like it has some coating that the regular v-torque does not. Much slicker string.
It also feels a bit thicker.
You can't really feel the sharp edges until you pull tension, but once you do, it feels very sharp.
This made weaving crosses somewhat difficult. This together with the string stiffness made stringing last few crosses fairly difficult.
It definitely feels much more elastic than v-torque, but also much stiffer.
45.7lbs on RacquetTune off the stringer. We'll see what the reading is after it settles a bit (24 hours)

@TW,

Can we hybrid this or do you want it strung in a full bed? The reason I ask, is I have two rackets that I'd like to get a feel for how the strings play in each racquet and the only way I can do that is if I hybrid.

Just wanted to make sure before I started stringing..... if I can't that is not a problem. Happy to be on the play test. Thanks

Hey kabrac,

Thanks for asking.

No hybrids for this one. We're curious about the qualities in a full bed.

Got mine yesterday, will string it up. Real nice feel, and looks very cool. Although it doesn't really match my Pure Aero (Lol need a p17), looks like it'll be a good string. @haqqani1777 has a great review of the string, might even use it in a tourney next week. Will string this later in the week for that cause, to preserve the string bed. Thanks again @TW Staff for the opportunity to playtest this string!

17g tester here and is my usual pref gauge in poly

Stringing impressions

-Fairly easy to string for a rough poly
-soft (prob softer in hand than cyclone tour)
-easy to kink while pulling crosses

Hitting

-a bit pingy with out dampener
-decent launch angle
-nice ball action and begs for fast RHS
-volleys/touch/drop shots nice
-comfort similar to cyclone tour
-better control than cyclone tour

I've been hitting with synthetic and multi strings as of late. My usual hitting partner says the ball was landing deeper in the court where it almost seemed like it would go out but dive down. Pace wasn't as much as my synthetic racquet I had been using. Still getting used to full poly again. Strings didn't move much. Pulling strings to see snap back seemed a bit difficult for poly. Put in about an hour and around 600 ground strokes according to PIQ. I think I am happy with the chosen tension.

iPrestige @ 45# CP
Racquets in rotation for past couple months
-Yonex vCore Tour 330 Synthetic 55#
-Babolat Aero Storm Tour Synthetic 55#
-Head iRadical Multi/Poly
-Head iPrestige Gut/Poly

Full review to follow.

Strung at 44 lbs, whole bed. It strings pretty easy for poly, a little closer to a synthetic gut. There is a twist to this string and a slight tendency to kink, but nothing bad.

  • What gauge did you receive? 18G
  • Tension(s) used for play-test: 52/50
  • Regular string set up: Tourna Big Hitter Silver 17G / Forten Sweet 17G (52 / 50)
  • Racquet used for test: ProKennex q5 295 (16 x 20) stock
  • Power of test string: I found this string to have medium power output. More power than Cyclone 17g and the non tour version of this string. I did not enjoy the v-torque non-tour version. I thought the string was under-powered for my game. This offering in the 18G was pretty much perfect for me. I am an older player and enjoy a bit of free power
  • Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp?): Crisp... great feel over the non-tour version. Able to place balls in the short court and execute drop shots. The non-tour version had that plastic stiff feel. I never felt connected to the ball. This string pockets the ball well and should work for many players. The non-tour version was more of a one trick pony. Move directed to the power base-liner with modern strokes trying to rip the cover off the ball with spin and power.
  • Spin: Spin is very good... It is of course a shaped 18G poly. If is was less than good.. that would be very surprising...
  • Comfort: I am guessing the stiffness to be about 195 to 200. Firm but not harsh at all. Solid feeling string-bed..
  • Durability: I have 10 hours on the string.. still playing well. I am using a 16 x 20 pattern and I am not seeming much wear. I am not a string breaker and hit the ball lower in the string bed.. that seems to account for less string breakage. I do hit a medium heavy ball.
  • Playability Duration: Very impressive for a softer co-poly. 10 hours and it seem to be holding up well. Have not really had to modify my strokes at all so far.
  • Control: To me this is one of the best features on this string (or maybe the frame I am using). Loving the solid consistent, full bed of this poly.
  • Tension recommendations (would you re-string this at a different tension?) No...
  • Compare to string used most often: This string in a full bed does not the free power of my regular set-up but has better control and seems to be holding up better in the "Playability Duration" category. Comfort is about the same. Feel and ball pocketing is better..
  • List any additional thoughts (optional): Like this over the non-tour.. not even close. Enjoyed this better than Cyclone 17G. But I love the 19G Cyclone..

This is an insane string. I got the 17g. Huge spin potential, and my Pure Aero is basically a rocket launcher now. Strung it at 52, but somehow dropped to 46.2 lb on racquettune. Anyways, had a really good first impression. Love the power, but I can also hone in and control my balls to pinpoint them on the court. It does take a bit more effort to make the balls go where I want them to, but it is a very nice string. Review will come later.

4.5 level player. Like to hit fairly hard and attack when I can.
  • I received 19 GA. 1.10
  • Strung @55lbs
  • My regular string is usuallyLuxilon 4G
  • I strung this up in a Pacific Xforce Comp 105
  • Power 7/10
  • Feel was good because of the 19ga but not outstanding
  • Spin 7/10
  • Comfort 6/10. This string just felt "plasticy"
  • Durability was good. Still have not broken it, but I mostly drive the ball with some spin. Durability 8/10
  • I hit with it for about an hour and a half
  • Control 7.5/10
  • Tension Maintenance 9/10. This and durability for a thin gauge was good for this string. 9/10
  • I would compare the feel to Yonex Poly Tour Pro. Like I said though, the string just felt cheap to me
Additional Thoughts:

I appreciate Tennis Warehouse for selecting me to be apart of the playtest. That said, I'm gonna go a little George Carlin here, albeit a kinder version, but nonetheless, you're gonna get a straight up, honest assessment of what I thought...

Was good only because it was free, which I appreciate. But I have noticed both with Volkl Cyclone Tour and V Torque Tour, these strings feel cheep and almost play like discarded rejects compared to the regular versions. I hate to see when a company makes something really good and think they can sort of fool the customer into thinking that since this is a newer, tour version, it must be better. To me, it was not. I try alot of different strings and racquets and my game can back up an honest review.

I would not pay more than $7.49 a set for this string if it was the only string I could get. I appreciate again TW, although after my review will probably not be allowed on another review, because they are in the business of selling and I get that.

So to wrap it up, I don't think this is any better than the regular V Torque and at the current price of over $10 a set, I have to give this a THUMBS DOWN

  • What gauge did you receive?
  • 17g
  • Tension(s) used for playtest?
  • 52 lb should have dropped 5 % I liked it better as it broke in.
  • Regular string set up?
  • I'm a fan of Hybrids and generally use Pro Hurricane Tour/Golden Set Classic cross 50/52
  • Racquet used for test?
  • Volkl SuperG10 295 at 11.7 ozs 6 pts Headlight
  • Power of test string?
  • Middle of the road poly power not overpowering or to dead
  • Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp?)
  • I would say more to the crisp side with perhaps a little stiffness on off sweetspot hits
  • Spin
  • It does provide more spin especially on moderate swing speeds emphasizing spin stroke. On high swing speeds the spin increase is less dramatic because the stroke itself provides all you need.
  • Comfort
  • Again not mushy or soft but not stiff or boardy.
  • Durability
  • Better than average came off stringer at 48 lb Racquet tune 33.8 SBS 8/14/17
  • 3 hrs doubles 43.2 lb 31.1 SBS
  • 1.5 hrs drills 41.8 lb 30.1 SBS
  • 1.5 singles 41.4 lb 29.8 SBS
  • 3 hrs doubles 41.3 lb 29.7 8/23/17
  • mild notching but may have stabilized tension loss.
  • Playability Duration
  • Still very playable perhaps becoming a bit stiff or losing resiliency
  • Control
  • Excellent control string especially for moderate pace ground strokes ie short cross court angles, good on volleys OK on serves
  • Tension recommendations (would you re-string this at a different tension?)
  • I'd string this at 46 or 48 if I had it to do over I expected it to lose more tension and quicker than it did.
  • Compare to string used most often
  • It's comparable to ProPro Blackout with better longevity and feel. Less stiff more powerful than GS Snakebite. Not as stiff and longer lasting than V-Pro. Stiffer and longer lasting than V-Star. It is a good choice for a textured poly, if your partial to those. It is going to perform well with better than average playability and longevity. I prefer the Pro Hurricane Tour/SynGut I've be playing for overall performance , power and comfort
  • List any additional thoughts (optional)
  • This is a good solid textured poly It provides good spin, power and service life. Feel is an individual thing and only you can decide for you. The right string can help your enjoyment of the game but it can't fix your game.
  • I think to many people say "I keep hitting my backhand in the net. What sting do I need ?" You don't need a different string you need a better backhand.
  • I'll continue to use this and follow up when I finally done.
  • 09/12/17 follow up: It finally let returning some hard serves I got about 11 hrs. out of it and it had only lost 14.2% per Racquet Tune. It had notched up and lost its magic as far as spin goes but hadn't gotten unplayable even at the end. Thanks TW and Volkl for the opportunity to try out V-Torque Tour

Please keep us posted with the tension maintenance; I found a large initial drop with the non-tour version, and then much more than average tension loss from there. Not to mention the longitudinal splitting...

  • Gauge = 19 (1.10mm)
  • Tension = 43 lbs
  • Regular string set up: Hybrid of gut mains 16 gauge @ 54 lbs, Volkl Cyclone 18 gauge (1.20mm) at 46 lbs
  • Racquet used for test: Wilson RF97 2015 (red/black)
  • Power of test string: medium low
  • Feel: Stiff compared to my gut hybrid setup.
  • Spin: Heavy spin
  • Comfort: medium, which is good for a full bed of poly
  • Durability: moderate to low
  • Playability Duration: 9 hours of playtime
  • Control: High
  • Tension recommendations (would you re-string this at a different tension?): This string played very well at 43 lbs. I would string it again at this tension
  • Compare to string used most often: The touch is less. It places better and has more spin.
  • Additional thoughts: I played four matches with this string and won them all (4.0 level), mix of doubles and singles. The first three were with my team, the last was a recorded match for playoffs. I get a lot of aces with this string. I usually have a harder time acing on clay. The string played very well. Groundstroke placement was very good. Drop shots were great. For me the soft touch shots were a little off and usually a little short (hit the net). After this broke I thought I’d try a full bed of poly and strung the same racquet with Volkl Cyclone 18 (1.20mm) at 43 lbs. It was not the same at all. Very harsh and not the same precision.

Hi Roar,
After this play-test are you going to go back to your regular string set-up or will you be changing to V-Torque Tour? The reason I ask is because I use Volkl Cylclone 18g but I am looking around for a string that doesn't play so dead. Could you elaborate on "the touch is less. It places better..." I'm not sure what you mean here. Any other comparison between Volkl Cyclone 18 and V-Torque Tour 19g would be appreciated. How about tension maintenance, etc.
Thanks for your review,
moa

Hello Milk of Amnesia, I still have a few more sets of gut, so I'll keep with my regular setup for now. I may get a single set of this string for my hybrid setup and see how it does. As to the touch and placing comments, I have a easy time hitting hard and having the ball go right where I want it to. With server it's pretty amazing how well it hits it's spots. With a kick server I get very nasty bounces on clay. For touch I'm taking about the soft shots at net. Drop volleys, slow angles, the type of shot where you take all the power out of the ball. For me with this string too much power was taken out. I'd hit the net a lot. When I tried adjusting I'd hit just a little deeper into the court, which is no good since my opponents could get to it.

For me, the V-Torque Tour 19 was much more lively than the Volkl Cyclone 18. It's still poly and not as lively as synthetic guy. I didn't do any tests with tension maintenance. It did play well until about the last 1/2 hour of it's life. If you can live with the string life of 9 hrs or so it may be worth a try.

  • What gauge did you receive? 18G
  • Tension(s) used for play-test: 47lbs.
  • Regular string set up: Luxilon Natural Gut 1.25g, 63lbs.
  • Racquet used for test: Head Radical
  • Power of test string: Adequate power string for my style of play, especially with big swing base line hitting. I hit with a big swing, so string power of this type even though is less than the nat. gut I use, but is plenty for me as it gives great control.
  • Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp?):More on the stiffer side, but felt still comfortable, probably feels more stiff to me as I usually hit with nat. gut most of the time so most all strings feel stiffer to me.
  • Spin: I hit a traditional eastern forehand old school flat shots, but when needed spin was easily created.
  • Comfort: No issues with comfort, even though string felt rather stiff, it was no issue for my arm, most likely due to lower tension that I strung this string, as when I hit with poly strings, I usually string it at 47 lbs, like this one, and most poly strings are easy on my arm at that tension.
  • Durability: 15 minutes of practice serving, 3 hours of singles and less than 2 hours of doubles and string snapped. One of the shortest life of a string for me to date.1st time hitting an 18g. string, so I really don't know if that would be normal for me, as I am not a typical string breaker, at least with nat. gut that I normally hit with.
  • Playability Duration: Played well for the duration that it lasted, without much changing.
  • Control: Control was great with both baseline hitting as well as volleys, one of the nicest characteristics of this string. I may order a couple sets of this string with next order to try a set up with my Lux. nat gut in mains and this string the crosses to give more control while keeping the feeling and comfort of the nat. gut.
  • Tension recommendations (would you re-string this at a different tension?)For a full bed like this playtest I would keep the same for comfort and feel. For a hybrid, I would need to increase the tension as the mains would be greater with nat. gut and I would not want to stress the racquet with a great tension difference between the mains and crosses.
  • Compare to string used most often: Compared to Lux. nat gut, the gut has more feel and feedback when hitting, but this string does give great control (even though Lux. gut gives good control for a nat. gut) , and the gut does produce more power.
  • List any additional thoughts (optional): Like I said earlier, I would like to try this string in the crosses with my Lux. gut in the mains to get more control with maintaining some of the feel and comfort of the gut strings.
