Well, good on Denis. He pulled out the win but by the skin of his teeth. Not a pretty win, but still a win. Polansky pushed him a lot harder than I thought he would, but in fairness, Denis had 2 bad service games. Still, he goes forward.

Good that he held on! But not so good that he made it close.

Ah well, that’s pretty normal nowadays, such is life for us Shapo fans!

This clearly isn’t tournament winning form, but each match is good to win.

Not much pep in the Shapo step today and he fumbled away a break lead in the 2nd. I'm now seeing what you're talking about with the mental side. First serve had little punch today.

Teenage fatigue...82 Tour matches and three DC rubbers, 26 tournaments on five continents. Unlike FAA's crew, they did arrange that busy schedule without long flights overnight to play qualies 2800 miles away after winning a Challenger title.
Banner year, so anything really a bonus from here on out for the Demon.

Tsitsi with all the answers versus Millman early, outgrinding him, serving bigger, and working points for winners. But in 2nd Tsitsi started flagging. Now Millman getting a bit erratic as Tsitsi finds 2nd wind and holds for 4-3.

Honestly, the more I see of Tsitsi the more I think he doesn't have Slam level upside.
He's got a ways to go if he's going to let Millman tire him out.

His 2nd serve game is crap. His 2nd serve is cream puff and his returning position will never get you anywhere.

I'm looking at his HC stats, but then many of his best runs have come on grass and clay, and his best run was against a strong field with ridiculously tight wins.

Ofcourse his stats are gonna be ****

Sparlingo, I know that. I meant that Polansky served for the match but he never held a match point. Hope that's clear, LOL.

Yeah, I did read that as match point, sorry. But he didn't serve for the match either, Polansky served when it was 5-5 which wouldn't have been for the match, it would have made it 6-5 for Polansky if he had won that game, but he got broke.

Shapo stats are weird now because they retooled his serve post Wimbledon and though showing sings of paying off his serve was quite weak today. His return has been a notch better this Summer which I view as critical and much more important. Of course if his serve game stays depressed well he's going to be disappointing to say the least.

Chung beats Kudla in a straightforward match. I'm so glad he's back to a high level. Please do not let him get injured again!

Next up is a potential match up with the Fog.
I'm amazed at how long its took him to come back and still not at Auz Open levels. He's about where he was last year when he won Milan.

Lots of Good matches Thursday:
Lacko v Fognini
Verdasco v Coolschreiber
Isner v Klahn
Gulbis v Shaps

Cheers
3fees :)
Not sure if I'm love with any of these, but Gulbis v Shapo should be a spectacle. Some potentially decents QFs: Tsitsi waiting for Fiasco/Kohly, Shapo v Sock, and Fognini (NextGen slayer), vs Chung.

SF with Fog or Chung would be good. Izzy v Shapo SF only hope in the top half.

Yeah the recovery took way too long. But the length of that injury is the very reason that he's still not back at AO level. It's difficult to make up for the loss in match practice and proper training.

As you know his odd technique makes it much worse. Maybe he'll be ready to defend his Auz Open excellence.:p

The TD has pitched in to keep Stockholm nightlife a bit tamer by scheduling Big Ernests vs Shapo as the last match tonight. Their police department thanks them for this wise decision. The oldest profession's association is not quite as happy.

Glorious Gren aka Tennys the Menace aka The Sandman moves on..... He really needs to start wearing a shirt that has one of these nicknames on it when he plays. Preferably one that says “Enter the Sandman” with a skull and tennis racquet crossbones print under it.

So John failed to serve out the match at 5-4 in the 2nd set, then lost the TB to force a 3rd. Gulbis and Shapo will have to wait just a little longer.

John grinding the point out well behind the baseline on BP lol, desperately waiting for the error. John so unlucky, Klahn's ball get called out, but he successfully challengers the call. Ball was a couple of mms in...

Holds on for 3-3.

Loooool, again, Klahn's ball clips the line down BP which was called out. John needs to keep his cool....

Back to back tight service games from Klahn, holds for 4-4...

No matter, when you have that great equalizer of a weapon at your disposal. A barrage of aces to hold, his 26th of the match to close out the game. Klahn simply guessing on return right now, forget about anticipation, none of it on return in this 3rd...

John must be the GOAT at hitting trash shots when it really matters the most.

Klahn holds from 0-30 and we have a deciding set TB. A couple of great wide serves from 30-30 though...

Wonder if John will smash his racquet of he loses this TB....

John shanked like four balls in that rally, until Klahn mishit his own forehand wide. Mini break to big man.

178 kmh 2nd serve attempted, DF, 15-30. Wayward backhand wide, had plenty of time to guide it into the open court, Gulbis nowhere near it. 2 BPs.

Terrible game, another shanked backhand landing well wide, Gulbis has the break of serve.

You thought Murray was very aware of his surroundings on court, Gulbis takes it to the next level...

40-0 to 40-40, two DFs included....

Nice response, Gulbis doing what he does on serve, flat 210 plus 1st serve with plenty of margin and go from there.... 3-1.

Shapo's body language really cracks me up at times lol, only Donald Young is funnier when they're in poor form, active players only. Gulbis holds on for 4-2, Denis supremely frustrated with the way this 1st set is going. Errors, errors and more errors.

176 kmh 2nd serve out wide attempted on deuce side, puts it long. 15-30. Sharp serve/forehand combo, 30-30. Brilliant pass from Gulbis, damn, shot of the match so far. BP.

Gulbis the more steady from the back of the court ;) 18 shot rally goes the way of the Latvian as Denis finally fires the forehand wide. Double break, 5-2.
