I think it's a bit of a deceptive stat considering none of the players listed played the same tournaments after gaining #1. It skews things a bit when, for instance, Federer gained #1 after winning the Aussie Open for the 1st time and, unlike the rest, his next 6 tournaments didn't include a Grand Slam.

You forgot Agassi. I'm curious to see that.

Tokyo Outdoor: Finalist
Atlanta: Finalist
Hamburg: Quarter-Finalist
French Open: Quarter-Finalist
Wimbledon: Semi-Finalist
Washington: Winner

Similar-ish to the others, one tournament win but beaten before the final on numerous occasions also.

Nobody expected Murray's results to mirror past #1's.

Those guys you mentioned earned theirs by outplaying their rivals over the course of a year. Murray got his by being the only guy still showing up the last half of the year. As soon as all the good players got healthy again, Murray's results were always headed for the crapper.

Nothing surprising about this decline, IMO.

An important question is: does a player typically play better after which of the following two scenarios:

1/ coming back from being sick and injured

Or

2/being in Perfect health
