How to lose weight is a frequent topic on this forum so I figured I'd post these videos that I recently watched.

What's interesting to discover is that the question, how we get fat, isn't an easy question to answer. In fact it's quite controversial.

If you listen to Gary Taubes, the conventional model (excess intake of calories leads to fat), is incorrect. He promotes the theory that carbohydrates drive insulin levels which drives fat.

I have found Taubes' model to be effective. The low carb/low sugar way of eating has helped me drop weight while retaining muscle. In fact a recent study out of Israel seems to support this model (the study found the high fat low carb way of eating was the most effective).

These videos are both roughly hour and they can get a little boring but they are interesting. The second video is basically a summary of Taubes' new book, Good Calories Bad Calories.

While Atkins is no longer the huge fad that it was 10 years ago, the evidence is pretty much all there that a low carb diet that permanently removes refined carbs from the equation is the best long term answer to weight control.

well since you need fat for a lot of bodily functions (essential fatty acids) and protein to maintain/build muscle (essential amino acids) and fewer calories ingested than expended to lose weight, theres more or less 1 way to add it up.

to lose weight without losing muscle and keeping the body functioning well, the calories have to come from somewhere, and that non-essential (mostly) "somewhere" is carbs.

its still pretty simply calories in vs. out, just tweaked for best results.
