I was thinking the same thing yesterday when I picked Azarenka, and then when she was down a break in the 3rd set I was like, yup welcome to the WTA. Where even picking the world #1 in the 4th round against an unseeded player is no safe bet.

The thing is that "safe bets" are not always guaranteed even in the ATP. No one suspected that Del Potro will go down to Chardy today. Hell, no one expected Nadal to lose to Rosol at Wimbledon.
At least Azarenka was able to right the ship when she needed to and still prevailed.

Makarova barely survives being outtchoked by Bartoli and then that? She got lucky..shes ok but to flighty.

I only saw it from 2-2 in the 2nd set. Not super quality, but I enjoyed both players running all over, the angles, and Kerbs with her variety, even if she wasn't executing great overall.

The first set was a total gagger. Makarova had a 5-2 lead then lost it, Kerber got to 5-5 then lost it...I cannot believe Kerber didn't pounce more at those 2 break points at 3-4...then after she blew them she checked out totally. It was not a great match. Makarova has played like C level the last 2 matches and escaped...that will change in the QF if she doesn't up her game.
