The first stretch of the season felt like 2006 for Federer. This clay season was a bit like Nadal's 2008. Almost a combination of the two years. According to Mats Wilander, a very knowledgeable and trustworthy expert, this makes sense because they are both playing the best tennis of their lives.

"today" nadal lost 3 times in a row to Federer with his "developed non-clay skills".

maybe sub 2nd half of 2006 and bring on 2010 instead.

Always nice to see the "decent* posters take their masks off. Guy has been taking digs at Federer since his hero fell off the cliff. Easy to be a "decent" poster when your fav is cleaning up, no?

Are you talking about me? I just posted, several times, that Fed is the greatest ever. Digs??

Really hope the second half plays out roughly the same as well, but with Djokovic becoming more competitive again to reach some of the finals.

No, that he lost to Fed proves that he wasn't in a slump. Nadal in a severe slump doesn't make it to Fed on HC, he loses to Pouille or Fognini.
Hmmmm... maybe. I think he was just getting out of his slump and his confidence was not all back. The rest of the HC season will be a test of that.

Nadal had a very severe slump. I think that's over.

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Nadal: I've made my first major final since mid 2014! Help! I'm slumping! I've won twice as many masters 1000s in the first half of the year compared to the last two combined! Help! I'm slumping! Help! I've slumped from rank 9 to rank 2! I'm slumping hard! I hit rank 2 for the first time since October 2014! I'm in a severe slump! Oh wait, I won Roland Garros like everyone predicted me to since January! Guess the slump is over according to my fans now!

Way to slump man! When you slump upwards, you know you're doing it right! Defy gravity and all other rules of common sense!

What? I didn't say the slump is over now after RG.

And I'm not a Nadal fan.

Federer to expose Nadal false dawn at Wimby, Cincy and USO :)

This isn't a false dawn. This is as much a false dawn as Federer in 2012. Nadal just came back for a brief spark to reclaim what is truly his - the number 2 spot and la decima. Now it's Federer's turn to have his second spark and return to where he truly belongs - the number 1 spot and another Wimbledon and US Open double (errr, or the "fast court" triple with the Australian in tow).

We will see how Fed is playing on Wednesday. I don't see why he can't return to form. 1-2 grass warm ups should be enough to shake off any rust, and Stuttgart is a pretty easy draw and one which he should win.

Federer at number 1? Ah, you are just trolling. Ok. Carry on.

Eh. He held the #1 spot in the race for a long time. If things pan out poorly, he still technically held a #1 spot on the tour. I know it's beyond common sense to hope for 2 more major titles, but given the way he was before injury, it's not unreasonable to at least expect 1 more final, if not 2. Semis should at least be a safe bet.

Sure, Fed was the only one beating him on a cosnsistent basis => Nadal must have been slumping

Come on, you're better than this.
Sigh, I guess I wasn't clear at all. I'm not saying Fed beat Nadal because Nadal was slumping at AO, IW and Miami.

All I'm saying is that Nadal had only recently finished his multi year slump and his confidence, while improved, was not what it is now, post RG. Fed's wins over Nadal were great and come with no caveats. In fact I think I posted elsewhere that Fed's AO17 is worth more, in my view, than two of his peak year Wimbys because it shows how great an ATG Fed really is and how he never gave up, even when his fans thought he had no chance.

It's not either or. I don't believe he was in a slump at the AO. He played great and had chances to win. How many times has Rafa been close to winning the AO in his career? 3, including this year. That's not a slump.
Now that doesn't mean he can't get better at the US swing. But Rafa might have cleaned up on HC almost as much as Fed did had Fed not been around/playing well

11 years on, it's rather more likely that Federer will win Cincinnati than Canada. Those summer results are likely to be reversed, even if nothing else is.
