Most wins over Big4 in a season:

2019 Thiem 7
2009 Del Potro 6
2007 Nalbandian / 2008 Davydenko / 2008 Tsonga / 2015 Wawrinka 5
2007 Ferrer / 2008 Simon / 2009 Davydenko / 2009 Roddick / 2010 Berdych / 2011 Tsonga / 2013 Berdych / 2013 Del Potro / 2019 Tsitsipas 4

Thiem had more wins over Big4 than anyone else, and started 2020 with a win over Nadal and a close match with Djokovic. (y)

Like virtually any other stat you've posted, this has several interpretations. The first is that Thiem is simply that good of a player, and the second is that the Big 3 have declined enough that players like Thiem are able to take advantage.

He already would have taken it had Djokovic not roped a doped him in AO final. Sorry but that almost was borderline unprofessional of Novak, he kind of let Dominic settle into the thought of certain victory and then started to play miles better than what he had been doing the entire match.

So it's unprofessional and unfair to play better and turn it around when you are 2 sets to 1 down in the biggest match there is, a Slam final?

One of Thiem's wins in 2019 was Murray though. He is a shadow of his former self so not quite the same.

Unprofessional was not the right word, unfair is closer to what I meant.

But that's why I said "almost". Clearly credit to Djokovic. But I would have liked it better had he not gone for a mental walkabout , Thiem kind of lost the measure of him and started to think of the end before he should have. Everyone thought Djokovic was almost done.

Almost everyone, even the commentators were certain Thiem would now win going into the 4th. But Djokovic somehow got everything back.

Of course I am biased because that hurt like hell.

But I think Djokovic kind of uses this type of strategy once the opponent starts to heat up. Somewhat Unfair ? To me it kind of was.

Don't that apply to any statement or stat posted here? ;)
You can give number of Fed slams 04/07, and you will say goat, and I will say the weakest era ever...

It only proves that Thiem is unreliable in big finals. Time after time he proved this to us. And he's the best of the under 30's we have right now.

I didn't know you were a Thiem fan. I was leaning Nadal. I like him too but I would never root for anyone over Novak, except 2013 Wimbledon final (I still feel a little guilty about it) but that was a once in a blue moon scenario. Novak said in the interview with Eurosport he just hit a brick wall and lost all energy in that 2nd set. Said that's never happened to him before and he prepared like he prepares for any big match like this. He was able to eat dates and drink some energy drinks to get his levels up. It did look like Thiem had him for a bit before Novak started playing well again. I guess if I wanted Thiem to win it would feel a bit unfair that he had all the momentum and looked he had a great chance and then it turned.

He's the third best player right now for a good reason. But like a few, he has the game but not the mental to win a slam over Nadal or Djokovic.

I like Thiem ,Medvedev a lot. Used to like Wawrinka a lot , and while I don't put much weight on personal lives of players, his off court actions have kind of alienated me.

As for this AO F , it was not a great experience to say the least. I didn't expect him to win it, only a close match. This was AO,and Novak looked good enough. However by beginning of the 4th set ,I was sure Thiem will win in 4.I thought the decisive break will come soon enough. It never came and Thiem got broken in a poor game by him.

Yes, the fundamental problem with the way stats are used here is that there’s little to no context and therefore they’re nothing more than a basis for confirmation bias

Even before the AO, I actually thought that Thiem would have had a pretty decent shot at finishing as YE #1, despite not really being convinced that he would've won any of the 4 Grand Slams.

Thiem will have a stronger career and legacy than Hewitt, Roddick and Safin (three random players off the top of my head).

Yea close matches where your favorite loses are always the worst. At least if it's a solid 3 or 4 set win, you can make the argument they weren't winning anyway so you are not quite as upset as you be in close 5 set losses.

He left his wife saying he wanted to "focus on tennis" or something ,he had a kid too. That's like the worst reason one can give.
His wife hinted at cheating on his part.

Started seeing Vekic like 3 months after the divorce. She was very young.Said something similar after leaving Vekic, that again after a long relationship. Went back to his old wife, left her again.

Really the entire thing doesn't look good to me.

Novak can act on court at times but he didn't seem like he was rope-a-doping in AO final to me. More like he lost the plot mentally, his serve went down the toilet and Thiem started gaining the upper hand. Once his serve came back it was a leveled match and Thiem blinked first like he usually does basically.

Thiem and big finals don't mix, just the way it is. Guy will turn 27 this year with one big title to his name. Maybe he'll do a Stan eventually but I wouldn't hold my breath.

There are tones of unhappy marriages even with several kids so there is nothing wrong to end such relationships. Though it’s quite weird that he came back to his ex-wife after giving up on Vekic. Never heard of it.

Definitely not against ending unhappy marriages but I remember he repeated that "I want to focus on tennis" bit a lot in those days. The one thing that irked me was that he started seeing Vekic so soon.

Eh call me conservative, old minded but something about him handling those situations rubbed me the wrong way.

Yeah, I'm sure they are off the top of your head....

By deafault he will have a better career but not because he is a better player.
