A dramatic match of variable content if these are the highlights (double faults abound).
The noise is off-putting - I had to explain to my gardener I was watching a tennis match. I'm not sure he was convinced!
Noise aside, I don't mind Sablenka. And whilst I've always liked Benecic, she's pretty crabby when it's not going her way. However, incredible fight back. Kudos.

She's also win Beijing and Cincinnati.
Probably the best footwork in W's game and one of the complete package.

Just low in confidence at the moment. That French Open against Serena was her best. Serena wasn't even play bad that time.
Really? How can you be the complete package when you're so brittle mentally?
She may have good footwork but not great hands. And misfires regularly, especially on the forehand.
When she's good, she's great. But when she's bad, she's woeful.
If she's the complete package, how do you explain so many inexplicable losses over her career?
I'm not disrespecting your opinion but l think we're watching two different players.

Hsieh Su-Wei took the first set! She just seems boggle and frustrate her opponents! She moves them side to side and then goes in for the slice kill. It’s really something to watch her play.

Agreed. And so calm. Quite amazing.

This moment is actually a long slow decline. She had a year well below expectation last year and that has carried on this year. I think when Simona schooled her in Paris last year it was a big turning back point for her. The game is moving out of that transitional period she did so well in and she can't keep up. She is a dangerous player in form but never a complete package and I don't expect her to win big again. She looked so second yesterday in every sense, physical, mental, technical it is a long way back from that. There are better players on the tour and by quite a distance now.

Her post FO win is actually far worse than this IMO. So I'll not surprised if she's back on top again.
Maybe new coach to inspire her again.

I really really like Pliskova, but I was secretly rooting for Hsieh. WOW! What a come back!! It’s never over huh?

Ironically Pliskova did the same thing to Serena in the AO.

Don't look now but Hsieh has found her way back from down 5-1 in the third to earning a match point!

Edit: MY GOD SHE'S DONE IT!
Deservedly so.
I think l most admire that she sort of looks like she wandered on to a tennis court and thinks "looks fun, I'll give it a go".
Very refreshing.

27 minute highlights! At some point these highlight just become "the match, without the service prep".

Bencic likes to challenge! And not too successfully!
Also more double faults at the worst time.
Halep breaks: 5-3 serving for first set.

Halep with 2 dfs herself is broken back!
Time to do something rather than watch this mundane match.

When was the last time a player other than Serena defended a title twice (won it 3 years in a row?) especially a Premier/Premier 5. Svitolina is just two matches away from winning Dubai for three consecutive years. Only Bencic and then Hsieh/Petra stand in her way.

No offence to Bencic and Hsieh but last weeks SF’s were definitely better..

Got a strong feeling these SF’s will be much better than the Dubai ones next week despite that being Premier 5.

Halep v Svitolina
Kerber v Mertens

Let’s see what we get next week..

Could’ve easily been:
#6 Svitolina v #3 Halep
#4 Pliskova v #2 Kvitova

That would’ve been epic.

Petra has to win this.

Gotta say, watching Hseih play is annoying. I recall others complain before. Never really watched her much. Cringing at her style and the way she hits a lot of her shots. I guess it drives opponents crazy as well.

Rennae Stubbs doesn't look like a happy camper either.
Her girl let Hseih back into the match. Tired and getting no rhythm from Hseih.

I love watching her play, or more accurately just kinda rocking up.
Some of her angles are insane, and the touch and disguise on dropshots are unbelievable.
Plus, she never gives up. She got the better of Kerber and Pliskova because she didn't rollover. And no hissy fits. She just gets on eith it. That's to be admired to my mind.

I’ve never watched one her matches from start to finish only highlights and I was impressed. Her style is completely unconventional, but it obviously seems to work for her. She is ranked in world at #31 and still has no apparel or racquet contract? I enjoyed her coming back for the win against Pliskova, it was exciting to watch. I’m not so sure she’ll be able to do the same to Petra. She just seems to do EVERYTHING well on the courts, I see her taking the whole thing.

Agree. There is much to admire about her touch, her unconventional game and her tenacity. It's the aesthetics... the stiffness, the "ugliness" of her strokes that makes me cringe. She's gotten very good with oddball mechanics.

Genie Bouchard is another player who has some very good elements despite her ugly, forced-looking strokes.

I think it's an asset that she hits the ball so unconventionally. It's almost impossible to read her backhand. And there are so many players that play a similar game, with variable success, that I like to see a different approach. Especially an approach with so much variety, and more importantly, a tennis brain.
I've always preferred tennis players that think, and just get on with it. No histrionics, no reliance on brute force.
I've really enjoyed watching her play this tournament. For me, a breath of fresh air.
I'm a fan :)

Darren Cahill should coach her.
I can't imagine he'd put up with her.
Halep, by all accounts, has a serious work ethic that Muguruza lacks. Plus Muguruza needs to get to net more and improve her hands, something Halep is loath to do, and I'm not sure that this is something Cahill pushed?
Not a good fit.

I agree oil and water those two. Cahill is free so he will be linked with any struggling player but he would be a disaster for a free spirit such as Mugu.

Murguruza is uncoachable. I want to like her, but it’s so disappointing that she has such a bad attitude.
