Nadal was the better player in the first 3 sets, but just wasn't himself mentally and conceded the sets.
This is where the wife and baby became a distraction
And Nadal's average 1st Serve was 114mph, and average 2nd Serve was 101mph, very good speeds but 9 double faults.
Tiafoe didn't win this match, Nadal lost it, very similar to 2021 Roland Garros defeat.

And yet we had a thread about how everyone presumes that if Djokovic was at USO, it was his to win and that he was a huge favorite!

Nadal is the player who is really being robbed. First RG was turned into DO. Now USO changed their surface to a very fast and low bouncing court. Nadal would have probably still beaten Tiafoe on the 2019 court.

Hang on a second, I've... hold on, it's here somewhere.... It's only small, but - aah, here it is:

Being played for you, the world's smallest violin.

Interesting how this turned out to be accurate. There must be someone with inside information, because it's happened on several slam big slam matches this year.
There must be news travelling down corridors? Look full on bet-ters do have multiple sources of info and tap everyone for info. However any match is still 50-50... just maybe not this one after first set ;)

Very happy for Frances! Hope this win lights a fire under him to be more consistent. I’m glad someone was able to put an end to Nadal and not choke. Rafa has been begging to be kicked out of a slam but they kept letting him off (looking at you, Korda).

Tiafoe didn't deserve to win, his 2nd Serve average was only 85mph.
Nadal's 2nd Serve average was 101mph.
You are only as good as your 2nd Serve.
Bizarre match :censored:

No, you are only as good as your return of meatball second serves. As an example, please refer back to the 85mph second serve that Tiafoe played s&v behind. What was the result? A Nadal ROS into the net.

Never tire of reading your takes, DS23. Keep them coming!

It's weird though. What would they have known in the last 30 minutes before the match that Tiafoe would win this, or at least push Nadal extremely close?

Nadal wanted to return to Mallorca as soon as possible to be with his wife and witness the birth of his firstborn.
:D
That could be a definite reason. Maybe he got an urgent phone call about that shortly before match and it was on his mind during the match?

Baby Rafael is close to being born.
He will win 23 Major titles.
:p
No, his total will be 47, as predicted by NadalGirl26, aka SoBad. This was posted in 2006 in one of the classic threads from even before my time here. Her/his math in the OP changed scientific thought.

I bumped the thread for anyone that wants to study clairvoyance at its finest.

Fed and Djoker just tweeted Mr. T congratulating him on his win! :)
Fed lost the slam race and there's absolutely 0% chance he isn't happy his buddy Rafa is ahead of someone he has never liked - Djokovic. He's never coming back to tennis in any meaningful capacity and would want Rafa to extend his slam lead over Djokovic. So no, he's not congratulating Frances. He wanted Nadal to bag #23 and extend his lead over Novak, that's pretty obvious to anyone to has followed Roger's career the past decade.

This is a gigantic mismatch, probably the most lopsided match-up Tiafoe will ever see.
Even with Nadal's serve compromised, I don't see Tiafoe winning a set.

Nadal's serve average:
1st Round = 114mph 1st Serve, 98mph 2nd Serve
2nd Round = 112mph 1st Serve, 97mph 2nd Serve
3rd Round = 112mph 1st Serve, 99mph 2nd Serve
He wins slams with his serve at those speeds, and even in 2010 when his 1st Serve was 120mph during the first 6 rounds, his 1st Serve was only 116mph in the Final vs. Djokovic.

Accuracy is supposedly compromised, as expected with a lower ball toss.
And getting 60% of 1st Serves in, is acceptable, even if he expects 65+, its always been very common for him to get 60% in and win.
1st Round = 57% 1st Serves in, 2 double faults
2nd Round = 61% 1st Serves in, 2 double faults
3rd Round = 59% 1st Serves in, 8 double faults
Serving 12 double faults for 3 matches is perfectly acceptable
This post didn't age well. LOL

I don't think Federer cares much nowadays.

The odds were so good, I got my full paycheck and bet it all on Nadal. I really hope he wins or I won't be able to pay for gas to work this week. Anyone know when the match starts? They are showing Collin vs Sabalenka currently. For some reason the cash out option is frozen, makes me think the match already happened.

Oldal should retire with Serena. He looked terrible today and is only a shadow of his former self.

This is fast court effect - a four time champion got dismantled by inconsistent youngster in four sets. Anyway I have always said - Nadal is overachiever and overrated at USO. No way he is anything to close to Federer/Sampras at USO.

Nadal has massively underachieved in USO, skipping it 4 times. Yeah, he lost at age 36. Should I remind you which players were beating Federer in USO at a younger age?

Nadal is thinking about his wife and future son.
At 36 any legend can lose to a hungry young man at the peak of his career.
I know you are happy about the loss of the Spanish player but at least be a little more original with your statement.

This is literally nonsensical LMAO. :unsure:o_O:-D

Nonsensical? Then how Tifo of all people dismantled him? What is his excuse for loss this time? Djokovic and Medvedev were out - the field waa wide open for him. But he failed to make even quarters.

I agree with your first sentence. The last two sentences are indeed nonsensical.

Last sentence is supported by stats. Fed/Sampras were far superior hard courters. OTOH Nadal'overall numbers on hard are not even better than Murray's. He is huge overachiever at USO.

Rafa has 1 fewer USO title than both Fed & Pete. Fed hasn't won in NYC in 15 years. Fed is 6-8 vs. Rafa on outdoor hardcourts. (Also 1-3 @AO)
So yeah, nonsensical is accurate.

Yes same a lot of pressure was off he is 2 clear of Fed and Djoker at the time I don’t care if he wins the slam race tbh if Novak is good enough and wins it on merit I just say too good bravo…
Watching Sinner now and i just feel Nadal and Djokovic are too old now. These young guys hit huge and move so well and they will be better next season while Rafa and Novak will get slower. Just inevitable this time would come.

I see the "Nadal lost because he's injured" posts again, Nadal respects his opponents, he respects Tiafoe, there is no way Nadal would say "I lost because I'm injured no?". The better player won today.

Nadal can now focus on trying to finish 2022 world number 1, he can turn a negative into a positive.

:-D:-D Nadal winning a 5th USO title this year would've been an absolute travesty to the sport. Thank God it didn't end up happening.
He has 4 lol. 4 or 5 not really a big deal. Has more than Djokovic, who some claim is the best ever hardcourter. Nice little browny point for Nadal really.
