40+ and 55+ allow players to keep their ratings too long.

or just use utr ;)

i’d don’t think it’s an age thing... more a dubs vs singles thing.

lots of excellent dubs players that play #1d or #2d that would get crushed in singles...

whatever with UTR ... at least for women at this point ... no stratification between 3.0 and 4.0

And do remember the reverse is also true.

I love it when I find that there is a mainly singles player as one of my opponents on D1 in either 3.5 or 4.0
Their ROS is almost always easily poachable because they don't know how to thread the needle
They send over arching TS balls that become the juiciest mid-court volleys
Net skills ... yeah right ... just send something to their bh side and you have won the point.

is it possible that those 55+ are switching to dubs and improving their ntrp via dubs?

i’ve seen lots of older folks 50-60 that are solid dubs (more because of their shot selection and precision (especially lobs and dink/chip shots)) player but don’t play singles anymore because they can’t keep up grinding points for 2 sets.
Yes, that is a factor in these player's preserving their higher level, they are generally better at doubles and 55+ is just doubles. But if they play 40+ doubles too they should still be measured against the "young guys" and their ratings reflect that, even moreso if they play 18+.

Similarly the guys playing 55+ 9.0 combo are barely 4.0s but have hung onto their 4.5 ratings way too long.

Then because these guys have painted themselves into a corner they only play against each other and the scores all look close to the computer so they never get bumped down.

J

That is why I have advocated for years for the USTA to bring out the V rating, as in 4.5V [emoji102]

A = Appeal
C = Computer
D = Disqualified
M = Mixed
S = Self
V is for Vanity.. for those who don't realize they aren't what they used to be.

I'm certainly not against the age leagues, but what's happening is that guys are playing 40+ 4.5+ and doing well and getting bumped up to 5.0 when in 18+ 4.5 they would be court 2 players so they are eliminated from playing 18+ at all because their 5.0 rating won't allow them to play 4.5 and they would be slaughtered in 18+ 5.0+. It also ends their mixed career because an overrated old guy is too much of a liability.

I agree I see the same dozens guys who play 4.5 and lose every single match but among themselves they split . All of them are 4.0s trying to believe they are real 4.5 s and refuse reality !!!
Too many 4.0s who think they’re 4.5s for prestige

Was watching a mens' 4.5+ league match as we were next on for our match today.

Court of doubles, 3 of the players somewhere late 30s to early 40s, and one 60+. The 60 year old was clearly the best player in the group. Brilliant positioning, soft hands at net, hit with a level of intention that I didn't see with the others, his bh slice was a thing of beauty, great mover, S&V style. Watched the final game, he was serving ... 2 aces followed by 2 no returns. Match over.

Guy next to me who was also watching said that his serve was off today ... he usually sends more aces. Guy added that he hates trying to return his serves, they are impossibly fast and heavily top slice.

My UTR is 6 and I'm in the top 20% or so of 4.0 men, so a UTR 6 woman I would think would be a pretty strong 4.5.
she turned out to be a very consistent (no power, decent direction, ok lobs)
weak serve, got most shots back at the net.
and got alot more returns back than me (though many more were easy poaches by the net person)
she played like a low ntrp4.0 male moonballer.

unfortunately the opposing F was a former d2 player...

is your utr6 your dubs rating or singles rating?

I play 90% dubs. My singles UTR is 5.6, doubles is 6.4. My arthritic knees limit my singles ability now.

I think actually supports your notion Jolly. If you notice, top Div ! players, futures and even pro players start dropping to 4.5/4.0 levels, so amazing rec only players are actually getting bumped to 4.5 levels. Age IS a consideration.

I learned a hard lesson this year in men's league at my club. I was bumped up to court 2 this year and I had the opportunity to play matches a bit higher than I'm used to. It also included some matches against 20 and 30 somethings and I realized how much speed helps. I had one match against a young guy that had terrible strokes but so damn fast i couldn't get anything by him. I could hit to his backhand, move in, volley sharply CC and he'd still track it down and lob me. My arsenal of drop shots was rendered pointless. It was something I'm so not used to mostly playing in my 40+ group.

Of course we killed him in doubles as weak strokes and speed are not a recipe for success in mens doubles.

So I've learned I can easily hang with 4.0's in doubles. Can hold my own against 40+ 3.5 players and struggle against 20 year old crappy 3.5 pushers.

...and I realized how much speed helps.

I agree. In fact, I would go even further. Speed (quickness, agility, whatever you want to call it) is the primary factor. This is a game of moving in between shots, both at a “macro” level (running across the court) and a “micro” level (subtle quick last minute movements to perfect positioning right before a hit or getting out of the way of a body serve and still getting a clean stroke on the ball). A major reason that European players dominate the tour is that they all grew up playing soccer and have footwork, agility, speed, etc practically soaking in the water and baked into the cake. Soccer to them is what basketball or football traditionally is to Americans - they just all play from day one as standard - and it really shows in tennis. Lack of movement skills plague contemporary American players more than anything else.

What about self rates playing up and in open level tourneys where they DON’T belong?? Fortunately tournaments count in Try Hards rating and playing 3rd line mixed. Another golden nugget by J.L. Just common BS for past 10 years and always talking smack on what he considers lower level play..3.5 paper weight thread gold.

You know what we should do? Play a match and post the unedited video here.

That's what got rid of @Sup2Dresq and @drakulie and when they departed @Topaz slunk away with her tail between her legs.

You'd figure I'd at least get an I'm sorry out of one of them after I got healthy.

Lemme know, we are in the same area of the country. I'm always around, it would be a good thread.

Yeah it’s been about 3 years since I last ragged on you, PM you back then no response. You’re the one making past claims of being this high ranked tournament player(Most sections you accumulate points for participation hence the more you play the higher you rank). Kudos for the vids btw. You continue making threads and posts pumping yourself up and talking down on others. You post your name making USTA results available for everyone. Your 5.0 singles wins this year were against 4.5 guys that are still 4.5. Another singles win against a 4.0. Where is the 5 Open tournament wins? USTA? See how you do next year.
Never said you were a bad player or suck btw. And yes, if you are ever in the area would be down for something.

All kidding aside, I’m down for it.

Oh me too! The least I could do though is provide post tennis refreshment if you are traveling to me.

Did you say US Open maybe? Whenever you can if I have some advance notice I can usually make something work.

Possibly then; might be even sooner for family stuff. I’ll make sure to give you a good heads-up with plenty of time to spare.

i find it fascinating someone would follow a player so closely from afar for so long, discourage results, hate on them and their opponents, call them out in doubles only for the sole purpose of embarrassing them on a message board.

lol ok buddy.
It takes all kinds to make the world go round.

I guess.

Same here, I see lots of old guys who just stand there and hit slice moonballs all day, and self-rate at "4.5" because that's what they were a gazillion years ago. They just can't let it go.
