9 Tennis Players make the ESPN World Fame 100 for 2019

The biggest travesty is Mike Trout not even cracking the top 100. I know the guy doesn't care about being famous, but it's a real shame because pound for pound, he might be the best athlete on the planet these days.
Yea it's shame he isn't as popular as other players like Bryce Harper because he doesn't do things such as getting into altercations with other players, showboating, or holding up free agency. Although those are things that make the news for the wrong reasons, Harper acting up and being more "outspoken" has made his name appear on more headlines than Trout

Talent-wise though, Harper isn't even in the same stratosphere as Trout. Mike's still only 27 years old and he's already carved out a HOF career, which is insane. I've been following baseball for a while now and I don't think I've ever seen such a complete player before. He's elite in pretty much every aspect of the game: he regularly hits well over .300, blasts over 40 hrs, drives in 100 rbis, steals 40 bases, plays GG defense, frequently gets on base, etc.

His biggest problem is that he plays on a bad west coast team, so most of the country doesn't even see him play.

Yea true and that west coast team also happens to be the 'little brother' of the big market Dodgers. Had Trout played on the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox or even the Giants, he'd probably become a national icon.

Also, the only thing missing on his resume at the moment is postseason success, and that's not really his fault since the team around him stinks. The Angels management should be ashamed of themselves for being blessed with a player as talented as Trout for all these years just to appear in only 3 total playoff games rip

Even if the Angels weren't winning championships, if he could at least make the playoffs, the national audience would get to see him.

'American Football - 8 players' - that's way too many, IMO. I am tempted to say 'seven too many' but let's be polite.

From my experience, more people know Murray than Wawrinka.

Maybe that's why they're ranked the way they are :p:cool:

Tiger is no longer at his peak...I guess some people do not realize that.

Many others on the list are past their peak, including some of the very top guys. Same for all the gals on the list.

Title "world fame" is misleading title. As an example, there is not a single Chinese table tennis star on the list. Taking into consideration population of China and that they are household names in China it is unlikely that no one is top 100.

Ronaldo, Messi, LeBron and Curry (and James Harden :happydevil:) are probably the most popular athletes in China; way more than any local star. But yes, a couple of their table tennis stars could have made this list.

Correction: just saw that Gonzalo Higuain is on the list and, wait for it, Antoine Griezmann is Top 20 . So yes, ALL Chinese table tennis players could have made it.

The reason why no Chinese players made it is quite simple. 1/3 of the ranking is how much the player is googled and in China Google is blocked and they use Baidu, so no luck for their sportsman in ranking like this.

What is this list based off? Endorsements? Social media followings? I just can’t understand why Sharapova and Mirza are on the list over Osaka who won a slam in 2018 and definitely had media coverage behind her. I understand Serena being there considering the coverage and popularity she brings but Mirza didn’t play in 2018
Fairly certain ESPN doesn't have up-to-date endorsement figures for Osaka. When the Forbes ranking comes out later this year, that should give us a better understanding of how much she's raking in. Osaka's $8.5m deal with Adidas is itself more than twice as big as the $3m figure ESPN cites as her overall endorsement take-in. We still don't know how much her deal with Nissan is worth but it is surely lucrative and not the only other endorsement she has.

I don't know how much time they spent on this list because I caught at least one glaring mistake: it underestimates Odell Beckham Jr's social media following by about 9 million.
