I want to also explain about the "see how high I go" deal I do have. I actually hate simple goals because I always shoot for the stars. I'm always deathly afraid that if I set one goal, then I'll stick myself to that goal and plateau. Like for instance if I said I'd want to be a solid 3.5 to 4.0, then I wouldn't want to improve anymore. If I reach high over the years, and only hit 4.5 at tops, then that's no disappointment. That's a danged good improvement over where I have started from. But I'm just not a guy that wants to get really good at 3.5, and just keep winning 1st place trophies when that time comes. I don't want to be a 4.0 and sign up for 3.5 to obliterate them, when that time comes. I always want to improve and shoot for the stars. I do not ever want to plateau in anything I do.

Jake,

Coach K told me this: "PRACTICE DOESN'T MAKE PERFECT, PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT"

You need to work on:

1. Athleticism - usually this one isn't taught, but do what you can to better it. This invloves many things such as your movement and strength(mental and physical), just to name a couple.
2. Preperation - when I taught tennis years ago, I would stress this to our juniors because it is so important. You need to be prepared to hit any shot that comes over that net, so your feet have to be set, and that racquet must be back!!! PREPARE!!!
3. Play - Your strokes need to be developed. Its as simple as that. You need to hit, and hit, and hit with people who are above your ability. ( there will be some cost here!!) You are NEVER going to get better playing against a brick wall. Sorry...

If you want to get better, stop all the excuses and DO IT!! Quit acting like a 13 yr. old, trying to explain your life and how we as a forum should feel about you!!

I look forward to better vids from you. Hopefully you won't let us down!!

This is all a funny spoof. Good one! If it's serious, they made town parks for this kind of good time. Keep some cold beers in the trunk of your car, show up and hit with some guys, make a few friends.

That sounds awesome.Since none of us are pro's,there should be more of this.

here is the original thread with the DY comments and going pro. i wonder what happened to jake. hopefully he is spending more time working on his game than on these boards.
There was also another long thread Jake started after that one which was deleted by the mods apparently.

I think Jake finally realized how absurd his 3.0 to Pro reality show idea was or perhaps some media savvy person explained it to him using small words.

Wow, those computer censors are sensitive down in SLO.

Tom,

Yes, we delete posts/threads when they are not appropriate, are political, are religious, are flaming, are trolling, are trainwrecks, and so on and so forth. Freedom of speech goes only so far on this message board as it is privately owned. We do our best to keep it clean and do it as objectively as possible.

Oh, and one more thing. We do not allow the flaming/complaining of moderation. Those posts or threads will be deleted and are grounds for banning.

I mention this because this is the second time you've expressed concern about our moderation. The first of course, being deleted.

If you have any further inquiries we ask that you email them to discussadmin@tennis-warehouse.com

Hey, I'm cool with that, I'm glad to see someone's walking the property, I like cops. Sounds like I've got two strikes, one more and I guess I'm down to Lompoc or up to Atascadero--which one's got the best courts?

Cheers

Oh no...he'll never quit...it's his love and passion for the game, and the way he approaches everything in life! Never quit, and prove them wrong! No limits!!!!

"I'd love to know who is trying to torpedo me tonight. I'm trying to build up some support for my reality show on another message board, and some ******* just put up an old story from a long time back to torpedo things. I am thinking it's someone that I know, so come out, come out wherever you are. Don't hide. Please tell me what made you decide to do this."

"Have a tennis reality show I'm trying to get moving, and some ******* from my past decided to put up an extremely old story, and an untrue one, to torpedo everything...then decided to run away like a *****. This ******* wants a fight, he's going to get one."

I hope every poster out there who tried to give him advice or support realizes, and remembers, that he was BS'ing them.

I need to bookmark this thread. Whenever I feel down about my game, whenever I don't feel like I'm moving my feet or getting a good shoulder turn or swinging through or bending my knees, I will return here to watch the videos. Chicken Soup for my Tennis Soul, they are.

I was at the Book of Mormon 7PM show last Tuesday night with my dad and his new hoe and allah sudden he said "holy fuch that's Charlie Sheen"....I said nah no way, and I look down the aisle and sure enough it was him. I guess he was doing the Broadway thing a few days after the roast. Dude has a massive large head in person, like John Elway when I saw him pounding beers at CB Potts in Denver in '94. Massive large head in a physical sense.

Anyhoo, I heart Jake.

Big fan

He needs some Eagle though.

There are posters, and there is JoelDali. I'm a huge fan, but I gotta say: even though Joel is Jake's peer in funnyness, he just can't compete in profoundness. I'm sorry but it is what it is. Some people are born champions... can't beat that, man.

I still maintain he was ACTING as a bad tennis player.
Have you seen the videos of his acting? You'd probably change your mind if you had. However, if he was acting it was his greatest performance ever--Ocscar-worthy in fact--because he looked like a certifiably awful tennis player.

I like the crosscourt slice backhand. It's going to stay low and skid and make Donald Young bend his knees to hit the forehand. You just rattle his cage and see if something shakes loose.

Any updates on Jakes progress?

It appears he has gone on to tilt at other windmills. His forum account shows no activity since he made his last post in this thread on 9/12 and no new tennis videos have been posted to his youtube tennis account. He didn't get a USTA rating based on his tournament play in 2010 either apparently: http://tennislink.usta.com/LEAGUES/...archType=W&LastName=christner&FirstName=jacob

I guess that just goes to show that even delusional people can sometimes have a momentary flash of enlightenment where reality becomes less murky.

wow, I just watched his videos. My eyes hurt. This poor fellow has basically no shot at ever being very good because he's uncoordinated, clumsy, and non-athletic. I can't believe someone this bad could be so serious about the game.

You're using "enlightenment" as a euphemism for "Adult ADD," right?

Hard to say how serious he actually is...

His last blog post he got double bageled by some low level player in Sept. and then he hasn't posted again.

He originally posted talking a good game. He was going all out, he knew no limits to his ability and talked about 5.0, futures, ect. So has he quit already?

If he quits this soon, he is just a dabbler that talks big.

i do miss reading his posts. his threads got me through some pretty boring times at work. im still not sure if he was joking around, or he was serious and just really delusional. i think if he was messing with everyone he would still be here posting and making claims of beating other pros.

Jake, if you're out there, the problem is you're focusing on the things in life that don't really matter. When I was a kid I had hopes and dreams. We all did. But over time, the daily grind gets in the way and you miss the things that really matter, even though they are right in front of you, staring you in the face. I think the next time you should ask yourself "Am I on the right track here?". I don't mean to be rude but people like you I really pity. So maybe you could use the few brain cells you have and take advantage of the knowledge I have given you now. Good luck.

I already reneged those comments, but I'll elaborate on them some more. As everybody knows, I never ever even came close to saying that my own game would take 2-3 games off of him...that would be mental. I was saying mistakes by himself would do that. I thought like that because, no matter how hard someone hit, or how precise they were, I always made it by, win or lose, with pure hustle and others mistakes. It's how I won against my peers, and stayed in matches against better players. That ended with the A level guy, and all of my past accomplishments ended with the tournament.
This comes up all the time. The kinds of mistakes you see Donald Young make when he's playing a top 100 opponent, he would never make against anybody on these boards. Tony Lars would be lucky to win 2 games against Donald and that would be on his best serving day.

You're delusional but that's okay, we all went through that. When I was 12 or 13, I thought I could hang with top 10 pros. I started playing around 10. And it's not because I was 12 or 13, it's just that tennis is a sport where you have to become really good to realize how bad you are compared to... forget the ATP top 100... but just even pros in general. Those guys who specialize in doubles and are kind of out of shape, like that Polish dude, you wouldn't win a point against them. At your level, forget male players, you wouldn't win a game against a ranked high school female player. You wouldn't win a game against a state ranked 12 year old female junior.

But that's okay. Tennis makes people delusional.

I dunno, this summer this guy was down at Sandestin the same time I was. Kept trying to get him to come over to the tennis center to meet me/play in the round robin/clinic/whatever. He never showed, said something about playing at the Tivoli Courts the whole time (didn't even know there were Tivoli Courts and I was staying in the Tivoli section)

I completely agree, but it is weird how people think that they can become pro level in tennis, but never think that they can do it in other sports. You don't see guys playing at the YMCA and dominating basketball in rec leagues think they can make a roster in the NBA or some guy playing adult coed softball think "yeah I have a shot a pro baseball." But in tennis for some reason people think they can get ATP points starting out tennis in their 30s and 40s. Is it because people think that tennis is not that hard or you don't have to be an athlete to succeed?

Well I'm glad to see this thread has so much play, haha.

It was an interesting summer for me, and taking the beatdown that I did in the tournament opened my eyes. I played tennis my whole life waiting on other's mistakes, and thought I could move up levels and do the same, only adding variety as I moved up. I was flat mistaken, and I said that in my last thread I started.

There's so much I have to work on. You won't see me on these boards a ton. I'll put video up for critique, and have a convo about older players, or current ones, if I have a few minutes, but I need to focus.

Not to steal Jake's thunder... his delusions are on a grander scale than most, and not limited to tennis. But I do have a personal story of tennis delusions to tell, with a fair warning: it's nowhere as spectacular as Jake's.

Three years ago, my long-term on-and-off tennis passion flared up. I was rated 3.5 at the time, from my only foray into USTA league tennis a couple of years prior (played four league matches total that year, and did OK, 50/50.) So, back to the story: I bought a membership at a gym (not a tennis club) with a few indoor courts, and over the winter practiced, two-three times a week, a couple of hours at a time. At first it was just serving by myself; later, I hooked up with a few 3.5-ish guys and would hit with them; later, started practicing in a more targeted fashion, with an older guy who was a solid 4.5 in doubles (and probably better than that prior to a knee injury). I also attended a few clinics that were billed as "3.5-4.0", and felt that I was head and shoulders above everyone else there.

By February, I felt that I was ready to show the world my new-found tennis superiority, and entered my first-ever USTA tournament, in both 4.0 and 5.0 singles. I was certain that I would have a great shot at winning the 4.0 title, and would also do some serious damage at 5.0.

My first match was at 4.0, against the #1 seed. "Great" I thought, "I'll mow down this guy, and after that it will be a cake-walk". The match started... and ended 40 min later. 6:0 6:0. I won maybe a dozen points the entire match. Don't remember how I got home... I was absolutely crushed. Called the tournament desk to default my 5.0 match, and fell into bed, violently ill.

In retrospect, that result was exactly as expected. My opponent was an exceptionally good 4.0 (he ended that year as #1 in the state in 4.0 singles, was bumped up to 4.5, and had been playing 4.5 successfully since). But I would have crashed and burned against any middle-of-the-pack 4.0.

It was a lesson in humility that will last a lifetime. But I only truly realized what it takes to compete and win once I started playing USTA leagues and tournaments later that year. Prior to that, being passionate about tennis, following pro tour results, "practicing", and playing pick-up games at the neighborhood courts was not enough; there was still plenty of room left for delusions, at least in my case...

The silver lining of course was that once I got through the shock, I was inoculated from the magical thinking, and fired up to become as good a player as I can, through practice and competition. 4.5 is the next target, and realistically the last one as far as going up the NTRP ladder; but there are age tournaments, and in a dozen years I intend to be the youngest, fittest 60 y.o. around :). Or maybe I'm falling into another delusion.

Well ian2 at least you didn't do what this one guy did. He brought his whole extended family- grandparents, wife, kids, his brother and his wife to watch his big "tennis debut" at a 4.0 tournament. Before the match I overheard him talking about all the extra practice he had with his coach and just pumped and ready to take on anybody thrown at him. He even said that maybe he should have signed up for 4.5. I played on the court next to him and he lost 6-0, 6-0 so fast that I hadn't even finished my first set with my opponent. :)
