Ah Fate, She is a Fickle B

Imagine if the semifinals order of play had been reversed. Ferrer and Murray seemed more suited to play in the gusty conditions, while Berdych and Djokovic play better in calmer conditions.

Had Ferrer and Nole played first, being able to complete their match in the wind, Ferrer might have pulled off the upset. While on the other hand, Berdych might have caused an upset against Murray in the calm conditions today.

Imagine a US Open final, Ferrer v Berdych. I know Aussie '08 was the last time a GS Final had 2 non-GS winners, what about before that?

Could have been fun to watch. Now Djoker will destroy Murray...

Exactly right. There is always a healthy dose of luck in the draw and the playing conditions.

Funny thing is that I never used to care about the temperature, humidity, altitude, etc. until I started hearing the commentators/retired pros talk about how much of a factor they play in the outcome of matches. Never seemed to bother me while I was playing :)

Of course, the 30 MPH winds during the Murray match were ridiculous. But yeah, I think Ferrer would have handled them better than Berdych did and very likely might have had a chance against Djokovic, who could have been rattled under those conditions.

That's why sports are fun to watch, but you can't really put too much emotion into the outcome. There are simply too many factors that work for/against the players at any given time.

What do you base this on? Ferrer's heavy top spin vs a heavy flat Djokovic backhand in the wind? It would be slaughter. On the other hand, clamer conditions would definately have favoured Berdych on the form he showed. He might be too old to learn but a tennis player must be prepared for all eventualities.

Um, did you see the difference between yesterday and today? ferrer won 71% of the games played yesterday while Djoker won 72% today. Djoker's high pace shots are extremely difficult to hit cleanly in windy conditions. In high wind, pushing is a much more effective tactic than aggression. Ferrer is a better pusher, IMO, than Nole. Nole is way better in the aggression, but that gets nullified in high wind.

But Ferrer wasn't pushing in that first set yesterday. He was painting lines! Hard to imagine him keeping up that level in the wind.

Nole was a bit off, but was also trying to play a higher percentage game in those conditions.

Even Nole's coach says the wind was a big problem. Here's a snip from an article on the NYTimes:

Djokovic trailed David Ferrer, 5-2, when officials suspended play. It is possible he celebrated the postponement more than his victory the next day, because the former largely made the latter possible. Vajda said Djokovic “could not cope” with the miserable conditions, but he flourished underneath the afternoon sun in his 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 triumph.

“I didn’t mind getting off the court,” Djokovic said Sunday as a sly smile crept across his face.

That would have been a bore-fest dull enough to dope the earth into a coma for a decade....so Fate was not fickle...she was kind to all of us.

A travesty Berdych didn't get to knock Murray out in proper tennis conditions. I'll probably fall asleep during the final tomorrow. Who knows, I might wake up and it'll be the same game.

Nole admitted Ferru plays better in the wind; it would have been nice to see Ferru have a victory in the semis. I was there; he was playing like there was no wind. (Still mad they wouldn't let him finish the set. )

I'm not sure Berdych could have pulled off the upset; when Andy was playing well he was playing great (even though his consistency needs work ... I think the outcome tomorrow really will depend on which Andy shows up).

I want to see Djokovic win too--he was my pick going into the USO--but let's be serious: it remains to be seen if he will be one of the great players.

Nope, I don't think so. I think regardless of the conditions or situation, Novak and Murray both would have won.

Not sure Djokovic will destroy Murray tomorrow. I think it could go either way and Murray has a great shot here.

Are you 100% sure that Djokovic will win tomorrow? Because it does not appear as such a done deal to me. I think Murray has a good chance, his best ever.
