Almagro in my opinion isn't a real top 10, his results in majors speak for themselves and the way He is unprofessional managing his schedule choosing the tournament He plays probably lead him to lose so early at the French.
He can only do well at small ATP 250 on clay, that is all, if the clay season didn;t have many tournaments He'd probably be in the top 30, which overall in my opinion is where He should be.

Melzer- this guy has a good game, all around player, is a great doubles player but suffers to beat and maintain his consistency against lower ranked players.
Mentally weak, but I don;t see why he can't beat lower ranked players.

What do you all think?

I agree.
Mugro should be top 30, Melzer top 20.

However saw some of the Melzer match yesterday...that Rosol guy was amazing...incredible serve...I think he'll break top 50 very soon

Almagro doesn't perform anywhere but clay tournaments and only small ones, if He had a quarter-final at a major, was probably only once, besides that He's done nothing anywhere else that would make you think He is a top 10.

Melzer has beaten Fed, Nadal and last year Djokovic, so i respect him more.

I believe both will be out of the top 10 soon and I think Gasquet, Tsonga are more likely to be top 10.

Of course Del Po will make his come back there so automatically somebody has to get out of there.

If they are there then it is deserved. You don't become top 10er because you are cute.

Agreed. If you want to address this issue, don't talk about the players, talk about the points/ranking system.

Asking if someone deserves to be in the top 10 has a very simple answer: if they are in the top 10, yes; if they are not in the top 10, no.

Yes, because Verdasco was not at all a disgrace to have in the top 10...

This is one of the weakest top 10s, especially in bottom half, ever. Period.

Melzer, Monfils, Fish all in the top 10 ? Huh?

Florian Mayer and Troicki are top 20 players, really? I mean Nalbandian is #23, and hasn't played much in the last year.

verdasco's a better player than Almagro, he's so far in this tournament going deeper and faced tougher competition.

Yeah, that is a good example and that is why i'm bringing this up, because Almagro at least is there because of the clay court where He plays 8 tournaments, wins the small ones, goes ok in the 500's , and is outplayed in all MS and majors, depending on the draw.

Almagro definitely relies on draws to do well in tournaments with better players playing it.

Melzer will be out of there as soon as RG ends so will Alamgro.

Verdasco was not at all a disgrace to be in the Top 10. Go back to a year ago from now and show me 10 players who deserved based on their achievements to be ranked above him.

Almagro is definately top 10 on clay maybe even top 5

I think the real question is why Monfils has been inside the top 10 for a relatively long time since the year began. His consistency has not been that good has it?

Verdasco was good up until Nadal sent him packing in AO '09. Now he's a joke. Melzer I give top 15, Almagro top 20, maybe 25.

He had a good end to the year in 2010. Montpellier win, Paris final, Tokyo final, QF at US Open and Davis Cup final.

I agree with this. Of course you earn your rank through your results - but Melzer and Fish in my mind aren't top 10 talents. I know, I hate that term too, but really Fish and Melz both have overachieved in making top 10. Both were journeymen players as recently as 2 years ago, just floating along. They've both improved in some aspects, but are still in my mind at least guys who aren't really consistent and guys that aren't threats at all to win slams.

A lot of variables - if JMDP wasn't out due to surgery last year he would def be top 10 and taking a spot from one of those guys.

Young guys like Cilic and Gulbis constantly underachieving. Ideally, old guys (29 & 30) shouldn't be the ones making top 10 breakthroughs, the young guys from the next generation have got to step up at some point.

The overall consistency on tour right now sucks. The only guys that I can say are 'consistent' in that you expect them to be deep in tournaments (QF/SF/F) are Fed, Nadal, Ferrer, and last but not least Djokovic. Everyone else is a question mark - can beat anyone and lose to nearly anyone, I'm speaking mostly of Soderling, Murray, Berdych in the 'can beat anyone' category here. Basically anyone 5-20 can lose to anyone 21-100, which is very WTA like, and not in a good way.
