Andy Roddick Revival might not be a myth?

His match against Djokovic will be the true test I say, but so far the start of 2009 has really shown some promising results for Andy, he played well at Doha and is playing well at the AO? Could we possibly see him maybe get to number 5. It would be funny if we see Andre 2. But I caught some Andy so far this year and he is playing spot on. He could beat Djokovic..yes I said it.

Roddick seems a lot fitter this year which, I think, is part of the reason he's cruising through the early rounds with relative ease. His style is still the same; his forehand may be even more spinnier but it hasn't been a problem for him so far.

I would say Roddick is more of a baseline grinder now. He's pretty consistent and doesn't seem to mind long rallies. If this style will give him better results, then maybe he doesn't need that flat forehand like everyone says but we'll just have to see.

I liked it when he was a pure attacker. Watch "Andy Roddick's greatest set" on Youtube, and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Yea he seems fine without that flat forehand and many felt that was going to be his weakness against Robredo..but I think maybe the spin might help and just throw the top off for a while. He has a real test against Djokovic..but I aint so quick to feel a Djokovic 3 set sweep, Roddick could win this especially if it goes to 5.

He lost 15 pounds of weight since the US Open.

Hopefully that will help with his movement and help him return to higher levels of performance and acheivement.

I just hope though that an increase in performance and achievement doesn't mean the return of the more rude brash & disrespectful Roddick from the 2003-2006 era. I think though he may have matured and mellowed since then.

Isn't Roddick's career very, slightly somewhat similar to Agassi's? Maybe he'll make a comeback.

Except Roddick has been in the top 10 for 6-7 consectutive years whilst Agassi didn't become a consistent fixture there until late in his career.

Actually, from the years 1988-2005, Agassi finished every year in the top 10 except for 1993 and 1997, both years when he missed much of the season with injuries.

I wouldn't say so. Besides the obvious immense disparity in achievement, and large difference in skill, Roddick never left the tennis scene for a time like Agassi. He's been a consistant top 10er for the past +6 years, just always living in the shadow of great players like Federer and Nadal. Some would say that he got a bit lucky with his one slam win.

Agassi was consistantly good enough to grab Slams throughout his career, and sure he did get a bit better as he neared 30, but he was always great.

I dont think its going to happen. I am a true roddick fan but hes still not hitting that forehand flat enough. Hes not getting enough shoulder rotation and is arming it way too much. Hes having good results because of his ability to bully lower ranked opponents. Other than that once he plays a quality opponent its over.

Not only is he more fit, but he seems to be moving quicker, making better decisions, and is far more accurate than last year. He's painting the lines a lot. It's gonna be a good show.

Then again, his draw has been very forgiving up to this point.

Even though he's hitting with alot of topspin, at least he's getting good depth and some penetration on his shots. Sure, he's not hitting massive winners, but it is better than nothing.

I think it has alot to do with him being "fitter", with the courts being slower and getting to the ball quicker, its just a shame that now he is there in time (more often) he still gives back a judy type backhand or less powered forehand then you would expect.

It is nice to see him winning though as the longer the rallies, the less the serve matters and maybe he can turn that into wins on other courts

As you said his match with Djokovic will tell alot whether or not this is the case. Before that we really cant tell much.

Great answer. I agree 100% on all points.

Of course he could beat the Joker--he has belief and that is what counts. Time will tell and I'd like to see Andy advance into the finals of a slam again....

Sorry no matter how good Andy looks (and he does look good) that weak arse forehand is going to keep him from upsetting Djokovic. The spin and lack of pace will bounce the ball right up in Djokers hitting zone and it will be crushed.
