Congrats to Roger Federer and WTF Tim Henman? Way to crash out and give us yet another boring final. :? Why are these slam and Masters finals so dreadfully dull, one-sided, and unexciting?

US Open final: boring
Houston TMC final: snorefest
Australian Open final: Zzzzz
and now Indian Wells final: Nyquil overdose

God deliver us from these ugly finals. Why couldn't the final have been that great Agassi/Federer match? Or Roddick/Henman?

Judging by the wimpy applause, the audience was clearly underwhelmed by such a short match, too. So am I. Somebody. Please. Make it stop.

Indian Wells has horrible finals. 2002, Hewitt won 1 & 2 I think, last year he won 1 & 1, this year Fed 3 & 3. Heck, 2001 was Agassi 7-6 7-5 6-1. Better than this, but still not big. Us Open final was alright, too much serve bashing though. The Masters Cup, although the score was ugly, but you gotta admit, the shotmaking by Federer was stuff to die for, which made that match good for me. Aus Open was good first set and half or so, then Federer just murdered him, but once agian, Fed's shot making was dynamite. This final, pretty bogus, Fed killing (but not superman again), and henman sucking.

I have a feeling Martha that you don't like Federer, which would be a reason why those last 3 finals especially didn't appeal to you, regardless of the amazing shots Federer pulls off.

fed's match was awesome we saw fed completely control play of henman a really good serve and volleyer. i thought it was awesome, great shotmaking and a strategic battle

It was boring in a sense no doubt coz from the beginning you can sort of feel it's gonna be Federer's day.

But it was amazing to see how Federer dismantle his opponent who had obviously been playing great tennis before him. Henman superb net play was hardly a thread to Federer today, only managed to win half of the points there. Federer was really picking apart Henman's game today, I honestly think other player should start watching more of Federer's match if they want to keep up with his level.

Just an awesome player! Too good to be true.

I was also just thinking about the number of boring finals we've had the past couple of years, and the only exception I can think of was Roddick vs. Fish at Cincy last year. THAT was an exciting, unpredictable, all sorts-o'-points final match.

The match today was particularly disappointing b/c of Henman's record against Fed. I was pretty sure Fed was going to win today, but I had no idea it was going to be a steamrolling. I don't care how awesome Fed is--okay, I do care, because he's an amazing shotmaker. I just don't want to see outright dominance on tour because that gets boring pretty fast.

Roddick also would likely have lost today, but I think it would have been a much more exciting match-up.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to why finals in the past couple of years have been so particularly one-sided?

Yes, it was boring, but at least there were a couple good televised matches. But I still think the best one, in terms of drama, was Calleri/Nadal. It definitely was the best match that nobody saw.

I put up my IW photos today, and as a general rule, we put up captions with the photos. My fave caption was on one of the photos from the Robredo/Nadal doubles match against Federer/Allergo. It is:

"It may take two of us . . . but we are beating the No. 1 player in the world."

And that about sums it up.

If anyone is interested, my photos are up on two albums. Mostly Nadal, but a few other things, too. And some folks here have contributed photos to it, so many thanks. :D

If you don't like Rafa, you won't like these photos. But there are some of Fed from the doubles match.

Yep. And we are all avid tennis fans here... Just imagine what someone who doesn't have a clue about tennis might think of the sport when tuning in -- assuming that a final should be the best the game has to offer.

I don't mean to undermine his victory but just like Sampras, Federer is not very inspirational. Personally, as a club player there is not a thing I can emulate or appreciate fully. On the other hand I had the best time the other day watching the Blake vs Dent match. Watching Blake playing makes me want to go out there and try things.

Can you tell what shoes he is wearing? He is obviously endorsed by Nike but it's chaos out there right now with them when it comes to the shoes situation... Another one we won't be able to buy before the french open?

David, there is a conversation in Shoes and Apparel called "Federer's new schoes" or something, talks all about them in there. Called the Vapors, check that conversation out for sure.

If the match had been a 3 game match Henman might have won. And I don't think Federer played very well...it seemed his first serve never went in, and the winners/errors ratio was in the negative. But then he didn't need to play his best. If Henman had played in R2 the way he played to-day he would have been on the flight home days ago. So, what is it that makes a player seemingly quit the moment he gets on the final's court? What's the thought process? Any ideas?

pc, not sure if you had watched the same match. Federer had only 5 UEs with much more winners and his serves was very effective today. Henman wasn't allowed to play the match he wanted to, read his interview. Federer never allowed him to. But I can understand that sometimes Federer made it so easy that people kept thinking that their opponents wasn't at their best. Some cases it's definitely true, but today, I doubt so. Henman certainly didn't quit, Federer take everything away from him. Henman couldn't execute what he did v Andy to federer today totally.

Which is why it's nonsense suggesting Andre should retire coz he showed that it's still him who can at least bring a match vs Federer.

PMac mind completely shut off after Andy was out. I don't know how can he be a commentator.

In Andre match, yes but vs Tim was completely opposite. I certainly hope other players will raise their level and match up with Federer, I'm not too keen on watching too many one sided match too. But I'm not convinced that Federer can be doing this for long. There's still many other players there who are very good.

I can understand the response from Federer dominance from people, what I have to say to you is the next five or six years you're going to see a lot of it because he's going to be at the top for the long haul. After watching Federer it just makes me want to play more and I'm playing the best tennis since collegeate. I have more confidence on my slices, movement, and strategic mindset out there. So to me he's very inspirational.

It may be boring to some, but to watch Federer play the type of tennis that he does, and win the way he does is really inspiring to me. The guy can do it all, he is the total package. He has a better backcourt game than Sampras, and IMO, has a better tactical head than Sampras. I would like to see Federer team with a good coach, but it appears he's doing everything he needs to be doing better than everybody else.
I agree that Federer will be on top for a long run. I think Federer has enough interest outside of tennis that he won't burn out. He's getting a taste of winning big championships now, and hopefully he'll decide to chase history before too much longer.

I agree with Rabbit here. Although the match was not that close, at least it showcased two different playing styles. I'd see Federer anytime and it's nice to see Henman back which adds one more potential Slam winner to the men's tour. At least I did not see any continued belly aching in between points from these two.

The match was one-sided but not boring IMO. Federer's game is multi-dimensional and oozes talent, deceptive power and layer upon layer of subtly. Each time he's on form he reveals previously unseen nuances and facets.

When asked who he wanted to play in the final he said 'Henman'.

He was definitely up to the challenge. He's a guy who loves a challenge, which he usually destroys easily...

I think Federer's in the same sort of mindset that Lendl had when he was dominating. Lendl said once while doing commentary (YAWN)that he wouldn't waste his breath arguing a bad call, because he always felt that he would win, regardless. I would think that he had the same feeling about missed shots. That is supreme confidence, no doubt.

*groan* Another smacktard who can't read. And which match did I just say I would've preferred to see as the final? That's right, the Agassi/FEDERER semi. So how in hell can I dislike Federer? I wanted a match that was actually a MATCH (ie, the one Agassi gave him) and not so one-sided where you knew who was gonna win the first game out (like the Henman match was).

Idiots abound here.

Dudes and dudettes, even in a boring match.......we can learn by watching. Henman's serve and volley technique offer a free lesson. And the Fed's forehand and backhand prep and racquetface-ball contact methodology can be emulated.....I go out and practice it after watching him.

Every post I have read of yours is some kind of put down or something negative written about someone or something. Perhaps you might want to go to another board to make fun of people in order to make yourself look better.

thanks.
