Another reason to drink milk?

Heptadecanoic acid (C17:0), aka Margaric acid, is a health-friendly saturated fat found in dairy fat and several other sources. Circulating margaric acid has been associated with a significant reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease. Good sources include whole milk, high-fat yogurt, butter and margarine. Low-fat (1%) milk contains considerably less than whole milk (and, of course, non-fat milk and non-fat yogurt contain zip). Other sources include rye and some fish/animal fats.

Recent studies with dolphins has uncovered yet another benefit of C17:0. If has been discovered that heptadecanoic acid normalizes insulin, glucose and triglyceride levels. This shows a very strong indication that this fat can combat/reverse early-stage diabetes. It has been hypothesized that "widespread movement away from whole fat dairy products in human populations may have created unanticipated heptadecanoic acid deficiencies and, in turn, this dietary deficiency may be playing a role in the global diabetes pandemic."

Good info. I don't drink milk as avidly as I used to, now I only consume it when making oatmeal, coffee or in yogurt.

I think solid arguments can be made to consume it or to not to. Above all, taking into consideration one's own diet and health should help assess the decision. If the benefits outweigh the adverse affects, then I say go for it.

Bumpin' the thread. Not been able to find a whole lot of info on this particular fat in foods (or in general). Anyone have any further input? Wondering if ice cream provides this fat.

Probably found in ice cream more so than milk itself. That's good because I like ice cream. I don't do milk, but consume mainly hard cheeses and green vegetables for my calcium. Whole milk cheeses should contain this acid, though I am uncertain if it is stable when bound with 'cheesy proteins.'
