Anyone worried that Federer might not comeback?

Are there videos of him training in the past few weeks or months? He will be 40 next year, I have a bad feeling that he might not comeback but I hope I'm wrong... Maybe he can't say that he will retire because of his contracts and sponsors but by staying away because of injury/surgery it's OK as he's technically still active  Ok I must stop imagining things, he will be back. Worried?

I hope that he does return, largely since much of the "serious" tennis fanbase are RF fans, and as a lover of the sport, I'd hate to see those folks abandon tennis on account of how their man left the sport.

Personally? Roger should do Roger. I'm not on the edge of my seat if he comes back or not¹.

I'm more worried *when* he comes back, he won't have the goods (= making the semis at Masters 1000/GS events, winning regular tour events, and so forth).

My 2 pence on the topic,

¹—Assuming he does, and plays well, I still believe DJ and Rafa will hold more Slams when the dust settles. We live in the Age of Titans; rational expectations go out the window ...
(Yes, I realize Rafa is already tied ... )

I think he will have one crack at Wimbledon and regardless of results and his state of fitness, that will be his farewell party.

I'll miss that old potato face when he retires, but before that I think he'll be back for at least one full season and maybe 1-2 extra wimbledons/summer swings.

He has to be in Tokyo next year.
Uniqlo have him 100 million reasons.

He's just put himself into a cryogenic sleep to slow down aging in preparation for next season. I heard he's planning on doing this between all the grand slams for the next 30 years.
In all seriousness, I would be devastated if he didn't return and *2020* was the last year he played.

The man is old, and stem cells can only do so much. I'll be surprised if he returns to win a slam. I suspect he is waiting until this whole pandemic mess is cleared up to announce he's retiring so we can all come to his party. God bless the GOAT, he gave us so much.

Roger will return, the question is at what level. If his knees cant support getting past the first week of a Major will he continue beyond this season.

A couple of seasons more at least for Rog. He's very stubborn about his decisions, and his egotistical side won't let him to only watch Novak and Rafa surpass him in slams. He wants to denie them as much as possible even if he doesn't feel he can win more he'll still play on.

I’m not worried per se. He will play in 2021. Question is how will he come back. Will it be like last time, unlikely given his age, or will it be like Stan, not to the same level as before surgery. The guy has to hang up his racquet sooner or later. My guess is that if the results aren’t there, 2021 will be it. If he has some success, he may continue beyond. I’d love to see him win another slam but I’m realistic about it. My guess is Basel 2021. Retire in home town, cry a lot, get a long, long, long standing ovation.

He already announced that he in fact can't wait to come back in 2021 and has been training. Why does this thread exist?

I'd say Basel 2022 is far more likely.

I already posted this recent interview in Federer News on October 3 which answers your questions. He's planning on coming back at the AO and will be in Dubai starting in early November for his training block.

THE INTERVIEW WITH ROGER FEDERER!
"There will be no more surgery"

Roger Federer takes time for his sponsors during his convalescence. And talks about comeback timing, family planning and travel projects in the interview.

After two knee operations in the spring, Federer has reached for the racket again, but will not get into the tournament routine before the Australian Open in January. The disagreements among the top players triggered by Novak Djokovic and the chaos of the tournament caused by the coronavirus also concern the most successful player in history during his unusually long stay in Switzerland.

Roger, how do you cope with life in these Corona times during your tournament break?

With a lot of patience, discipline and above all with a lot of common sense.

The virus won't upset you, but your knee will. How is your fitness?

I'm on the right track, I'm gradually coming back, but don't put any pressure on myself and take my time. I will only challenge in tournaments when I am one hundred percent fit. It currently looks like I can make my comeback at the Australian Open in January.

Can you train fully again?

Not yet, more than two hours with the racket are not possible at the moment. But I've been working on my stamina and strength absolutely painlessly for a while. There will be no further operations.

Novak Djokovic should keep you on your toes with his antics such as the Adriatic Tour or the disqualification in New York. When was the last time you spoke to him?

About two months ago. But it was only about how and when it starts again in tennis and how the corona measures can be implemented at the tournaments. We're both on the tour's ten-member council. There is a lot at stake, the survival of tournaments and the survival of professionals who keep their expenses.

Are you currently thinking more and more about how things should continue after your sporting career?

These thoughts have been occupying me specifically for about five years. But as long as I have fun and it's right for all of us, I'll keep going. After that, I will focus on my family, my foundation and my sponsors. I am very interested in business ideas and entrepreneurship. But I definitely don't want to plan everything now.

Not even the family? Or is your planning completed there?

(Laughs heartily.) Good question! I will be happy to forward them. It is certainly a good thing if you ask again every few years.

All the traveling will come to an end - or will you continue to feel like it?

Certainly! I want to go back to many places where I've been. I like to travel to Asia and South America. I liked Mexico, Chile, and Colombia too. I can imagine taking part in exhibition matches, taking tennis to places where this sport is still little noticed.

If he has decent results next year, I agree with you. If they are not I say next year is it. Do you honestly think his ego and legacy could stand a bunch of 3rd and 4th round exits? Time will tell if he still has his mojo. He was lucky that tennis was on hiatus for such a long time when he had surgery. Knee surgery is tricky though.
