Filip...it says on your Twitter machine that you've been hitting against some of the big guns Murray, Nadal and Djokovic.

What did you take from the experience (if anything)? And how do you go about hitting with these guys? Do you just ask them or do they approach you etc?

Had the priviledge of watching Filip play on Friday at a Futures tournament in Calgary. He lost a close three set match to Philip Bester (eventual finalist) in the quarters.

A few things I noticed about him:
-he hit the deck a lot running down balls. Great effort. Did some variation of the splits at least twice stretching for balls.
-he is very slight of build. When I first saw him I wondered if this would make him underpowered, but serve and groundstrokes seemed very powerful.
-the points where he was in beastmode were unreal. If he can elevate his game to be consistently in beastmode...well, look out.

I believe he is in Winnipeg now. If you are nearby, I'd recommend watching. There was no admission fee in Calgary, and the caliber of tennis for no cost was outstanding.

had a night out on the town with filip and a couple of other guys from tennis last night. didnt talk too much about tennis but got his thoughts about some of the top guys he practiced with at the roger's cup

rafa: hardest hitter he's ever faced, goes all-out from the first ball rather than starting off easy and then ramping up the pace. filip said he was moving and hitting at 110% of his abilities and still barely keeping up, though afterwards rafa's coach (francisco roig) mentioned that he kept up with the pace better than many of the other pros rafa'd hit with

murray: one thing filip mentioned was that despite appearances, andy's actually a really cool guy. he's a bit shy in public but pretty talkative in the locker room with fellow players.

djokovic: more stand off-ish than rafa and murray

matosevic: actually a really cool and funny guy, according to filip

That's what I heard! I'm in the Capital city in Alberta, and a bunch of my mates went down and played it. One of them made main draw and practiced with Fillip. He echoed the same comments that you did haha!

I assume because you won the USO Juniors last year that you were granted a wild card into the USO qualifying event this year.

Why didn't you play ?

Why would you assume that? The US Open basically only gives WCs to americans, except for those they give to French and Aussies (in exchange for American WCs at RG and Aus Open.)

I assumed it for the reason that every time I recall watching the Juniors the winner played the qualies the next year. And I don't think all (or most) had a high enough ranking the next year so I assumed they get an auto entry in the qualies.

Off my head I recall Murray played in 2005. Lojda in 2007 (I saw Schüttler beat him 6-0, 6-0 in the first round of qualies and that made am impact on me and I bet it did on Lojda as in "welcome to the pros"). Berankis in 2008. Grigor in 2009. Sock the year after he won, but he's American.

Incidentally, Murray w/o looking it up I think was the only one to qualify. Murray played a 5 setter in the first round main draw on the Grandstand cramping up badly in the 5th and going down to the then veteran Clement. It was a good match. Murray transitioned very quickly from the Juniors to the pros. And Murray of all the players I mentioned I thought had the most (old school) Junior game. All these dink shots, and lobs and slices.

This guy Filip became a succesful in juniors in the wrong error.

If it was Monfils error or Donald youngs error then it would show potential, but juniors has been a joke since 2008 from what i have seen

There's not much of a point in this post. Even assuming that it's a weak junior "error" right now, he can only play and beat who's across the net from him. A weak "error" will show who can't play (can't even beat weaker opponents) but can't determine whether or not someone is good (were they successful because opponents were weak or because they were strong?)

Since Peliwo has been successful, we can't really say how good he is or how much potential he has until we see more of his results on the pro tour. Assuming it really is a weak "error" and that you're not just saying that because you like Young and Monfils.

How ****ed were you when your partner missed the overhead on your match point of the doubles final?

Do the umpires always make bad calls in your matches. I remember you saying "you suck man, that's why your still in the futures".

Filip, what are your thoughts on why your generation is completely unable to break through? There aren't even 2 or 3 outliers that have broken through like we've seen in the previous couple generations, like Hewitt, Safin, and more recently Nadal and Djokovic. Not to insult you, but by your current age (19) Rafael Nadal had a major title to his name and Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray were both top 10/20. I'm not singling you out, because NO ONE of your generation has broken through. I can't believe that the conditions on tour have changed THAT much since 2005/2007, when the aforementioned players broke through. Is it just that there are no spectacularly talented players aged 19-21 right now?

What does having an audience (both in the stadium and on TV, and on the internet) mean to you? Does it help you or hinder you? How has being a professional tennis player changed your life? Are you happy with it?

I have a question for Filip how tall are you? Another question, why is it so much harder for the teenage male tennis players to burst through the rankings compared to the WTA Tour?

Is there a huge difference physically between teenage boys like 19 year olds such as yourself and adult men?

Just wondering, are you around the same height as David Ferrer? What do you think you have to do in order to be successful against the taller more powerful adult male tennis players? Have you sought out advice on how to improve despite your height?

I checked Filip's profile and he has not posted since February, so it is unlikely that he will be answering more questions. This is a 55 page thread. I read this thread early in its inception, and there were already many repeat questions due to people not reading previous pages.

It was very nice of him to give thoughtful answers to all the questions that he did answer. I hope he does well on the tour.

Hey Filip, wishing you great luck in SAC. Jackal are you there too? My boy is in the main draw and it would be great if we could arrange some practice time, although it might be tough as you are battling in the quals.

Also Filip, you played the opponent before (Canada F2) so I would like to ask if you could share your thoughts on his game.

You might be playing a player we are familiar with in the qual round and we could possibly share some insight with that as well.

Cheers, and Jackal, I'm training hard for our match!

After Ireland's No. 1 player James McGee withdrew because of illness, Filip Peliwo will now be playing in the main draw of the $15,000 South Island Indoor Challenge in Victoria, Canada from October 17th-20th.

Met Filip at the o2 yesterday.

Top guy and very pleasant. He said he was getting to hit with Roger, Rafa and Gasquet.

Also saw him hit with Berdych on Wednesday.

As far as strength and conditioning, most other sports have a true "offseason", i.e. a good chunk of time where significant effort can go into building strength, endurance, etc. Usually 6-8 weeks are need for major gains.

Tennis on the other hand seems to never stop, so how do you balance workouts with tennis wokouts/matches...tennis seems to play a balancing act between building gains, but not taking energy away from matches or increasing injury risk?

Has to be tough.

BTW...sorry if you already answered something like this, don't have time to browse over 1000 comments!

Hi Filip,

Do you know Steve Diez, I believe he's Spanish-Canadian but I think he's registered as Canadian. I found out that his dad owns/runs a tennis club a few miles from where I live where my son frequently plays in the tournament the club organizes sometimes. If you come around Marbella area to play or train, please let me know so we can come around to watch you. Thanks.
