At the end of the 4th set......

I thought for sure Medvedev would get blazing hot on serve and run away with it in Rosol fashion, and then two games in it was 15-40, and it was like my nightmare was coming true.

I definitely thought Nadal was in a spot of trouble. But I had a feeling going into the fifth that he was going to win. Getting over the line in a slam final is one of the toughest mental challenges in sport, and Medvedev had never faced that challenge. Nadal had conquered it 18 times.

Now 19.

I thought that Rafa would win the final set.

Turned out pretty much how I would have expected it..

Let's get honest for a moment here, Rafa won that deciding set because Daniil's backhand was breaking down all of a sudden.

Down 5-2, Daniil again found his third wind, but by that time it was too little too late.

Rafito scraped by the skin of his teeth.

Just.

I never had any doubt that Rafa was going to win, I was just wondering how hard he was going to make it on himself in the 5th

I was worried when the umpire gave him the time violation which lost him the first serve on one of the break points early in the 5th. Medvedev had all the momentum going in that stage of the match as well. Turns out that was one of the most important holds of Nadal's career without doubt.

Chokedal is making merit to reach his PHD in the matter.
The great Masters and Experts, are called Coria and Federer.
They know everything about losing a Grand Slam title while everything is within your reach.

If the rules had actually been enforced to the fullest, Nadal would've suffered over 30 time violations in that match. LOL

This is nonsense. Are you one of those that booed the umpire in the stadium? :p

Generally not easy to be umpire in a match involving such a hugely popular player and I think he did a remarkably good job.

@Tiki-Taka he lost the first serve then he faulted, so he actually was broken because of the time violation.
That was the moment when he was two breaks up and serving for the title. I was referring to the second game of the fifth set, when Daniil had a break point to go 2-0 up. Nadal got a time violation then as well.

Yes. I'm a Fed fan, but I'm fine with ALL of the Big 3 riding off into the sunset at this point. Won't stop me from rooting for him if he gets to a final, but I hope he doesn't become the Venus Williams of men's tennis, hanging around forever when he can't challenge for the trophies any more.

There were always great young players in the past, from Connors right through to the Big 3 when they were all young. I want to see another young guy hold up a slam trophy. It looked like Med could be that guy for a few minutes.

Sorry, Gary, but both Nadal and Djokovic are a few years younger than your favorite player, Federer.
Isn't it condescending on your part that you want the big3 to retire at the same time?
I do not think that the Spaniard and the Serbian play beyond the age of 36, but they both have 2 or 3 more years (in the case of Nole) to win important tournaments, reach weeks like number 1, chase more records and fight with this new generation for a while longer.
If you want Federer to retire next year, very well; He will turn 39 and he will beat Connors' games played and wins, however, he is unlikely to beat his record of titles.
But it is unfair that you want to put the other two in the same bag.
It is no accident to me that all Federer fans want Nadal and Djokovic to retire at the same time as their favorite player.
It's a shame.

Med choked 40-0, Nadal smell Blood.

Honestly, was thinking Medvedev got it. Had he played the tactical changes in the first set, Nadal would have lost.

Nadal worst form US Open.

I can’t believe how many finals Rafa wins where he should’ve lost and fed lost where he should’ve won

Must be mental difference. Can’t be luck.

Rolling into the 5th, when Rafa looked to be confused and running out of gas..... what were your honest thoughts? Everyone knows I bleed #TeamRafa and I was convinced he had messed it up. I went from celebration mode to texting my mom about how I can't believe Nadal gave the match away :D how many of you still thought Rafa would win? What an epic match, still can't believe he did it after Medvedev had won like 15 out of 17 points or something like that on the trot o_O

What an unexpected gift from Rafa. Who would have saw him having a slightly better year than Novak after the AO final? My boy is so epic!
My biggest worry was that for the first time ever, Rafa’s stamina would give out and he would lose because of it. He was really running out of gas, I was practically scared for him. I remember turning to my husband and saying, “I don’t know who is going to win this.” But, Rafa did win it! What a final! Will never forget it!

I don't expect any of them to retire until they decline. Fed will undoubtedly retire first unless injuries do the others in. I logically expect Fed to fade first, then Nadal because of us body, then Novak last.

I hope it is better for them than it was for Fed from 2014-2016.

You are reading WAY more into what I said than I deserve, and I would have been fine with someone overtaking and replacing Fed a few years back if that player had been young and with a game I like.

I was expressing an overall frustration with the continued dominance of these three. I have always enjoyed young players. I liked all these guys better when they were young, and I wish tennis had not changed so that young players can't dominate, or aren't good enough to dominate, whatever it is.

For the slam race I really don't care. You won't believe this, but which ever one of the Big 3 ends up ahead, at least for now, is fine with me. Some fans are just fans of players. I don't think I am one of those people. Others are fans of a style of play, so I'm always going to prefer a young guy like Shapo or Kyrgios, but I don't think Shapo has the brains to win major events (I hope I'm wrong), and I think Nick is too unstable and too undisciplined to get to the top. I like fast, aggressive tennis. Before Fed my faves were Edberg and Sampras. It has nothing to do with my opinion of them personally.

Absolutely, burritos with pork or chicken or beef with a bit of cheddar cheese and sour cream = heavenly. However I am opposed to leaving the bottom of the burrito wrap open, I like to fold that side inwards so that it keeps the veggies from falling out and turning the meal into a salad.

I have watched Rafa his whole career and can read his expressions. He was never relaxed entire match and missed some utter sitters in 3rd set so when he dumped that smash in net in 3rd set when he had BP and doubled over i knew he was spent physically. When he lost 3rd set i felt he had to try and hold serve in 4th and get to a TB and eek out a win that way. I could see he was going to struggle to break.

When he lost 4th set his look of shock said to me he had one chance left and that was an early break in 1st game. I felt if Medvedev went ahead in set that was it, game over. I felt if Rafa went behind in 5th set he would definitely be broken at around 3-4 or 4-5. So when Medvedev held i was close to violence as i was despairing and angry and thinking how Federer fans would claim it was bigger choke than 40-15 etc.

Then he went 15-40 down and got done for time violation in next game and i thought he had lost it mentally and would DF. As it happened i think the umpire helped him and wound him up as suddenely Rafa became alot more energised and aggressive and when he held that game i had renewed hope as i could see he had his swagger back as he was getting mad.

I was right as he went 5-2 up but then i saw another change in him and could see the nerves reappear..and when he got broke i felt he had to break Medvedev as if it got to 5-4 i felt he was finished and would lose either 7-5 or a final set TB. Which would have killed me and likely ended his career. When he missed the FH 2nd serve return at MP that was when i was at my most despondent..the way it dribbled in the net it seemed to me his arm was just so tight and that was when i thought he had lost it.

He had nothing left at 5-4. The drop shot he hit at deuce was not tactical..he was too tired to get to ball and just lunged at it to get over net and it turned into a drop shot. The serve at MP was actually a hit and hope, he was so tired he just knew he needed an ace so belted it down middle.

He was on the brink and he knows it. Mentally it took a huge toll and for me he should take rest of year off. Forget YE1, solely aim for AO as it wont be plexi cushion next year, greenset should be a bit slower and in heat bounce higher so he has a great chance to get a 2nd AO..which would mean he could get 21st Major at FO which obviously would be so fitting.

You mean like how Rafa choked at AO in 2012 and 2017 where he was up a break in the 5th set in both matches? LOL
Ao 2012 was no choke. Rafa missed a BH DTL wide..which he often does as he doesnt hit through the ball fully he hits across it so its a technical issue in the same way Federer often misses BPs as his BH simply falters..again not choking..technical weaknesses. Same with Djokovic on FH hence why Federer at MP at W targeted his FH.

Choking is what serena does every Major final nowadays

only thing concerning me was Nadal's exhaustion by the end of the tournament!!!

why did he get sooooooo tired???

the only time, I've seen, he was so fatigued that (I think in the 5th set after he got a break or something) he got down to do one of his knee bend celebrations and he just stayed kneeling for like 20 secs! he was that tired!

I didn't think he looked tired at any point, but after the 4th set, I was not confident. I thought it was 50/50 at that point, and considering Nadal's infinite experience advantage, that says a lot about how I was feeling about Medvedev's chances.

Nah, its impossible to give the match away when you are at 2-sets-all, so I never thought he'd given it away.....I knew the 5th Set was about to begin, that is all I was thinking :)

Most Rafa fans knew Rafa was in a great position in February, because he wildly exceeded expectations at the AO.
He didn't train properly for the AO (ankle surgery prevented full training), so the fact he easily made the AO final without even practicing his defense much, indicated he was good enough to win 2 or 3 slams-
"......because of the things that happened to me in terms of surgery, then what happened in Abu Dhabi, I was not able to work that much the defensive game."

Maybe I'm misremembering. I mean, it was a grueling match, neither of them looked fresh as daisies toward the end, I just didn't feel like Nadal would lose because looked tired. Rather, I felt like Medvedev was more likely to take it from Rafa than cave, something I never really feel with the younger players.

None of the young guys are mentally tough when compared to Rafa, so Rafa was clearly the favorite heading into the 5th Set :)
This is another reason why I think people are jumping to conclusions when it comes to Medvedev.
Medvedev hasn't proven anything at the slams, just that he can reach a Final when Federer/Djokovic lose early....
And he's proven nothing as far as 5-setters go.

When will Rafa learn to adapt tactics enabling him to preserve energy ?

Standing so far back when receiving serve forces him to cover a lot of ground, most of the time a totally wasted effort as he does lose the point anyways.

That's a stupid, stupid, stupid tactic no decent coach would let him get away with it.

Then no wonder he gets tight on important points since his tank is already dry, and he's embarked in 5 sets fights to the finish.

Well to be fair, Federer at least managed to push Djokovic to get those MPs.
Nadal's performance at AO was a complete disgrace.

Yes, the Wimbledon final was a great match and Fed played really well, no dispute there. He just choked on the match points.

Nadal losing to Djokovic and Federer in 5 sets in the AO final is hardy a disgrace.

How was Rafa’s last match at Wimbledon?

Federer beat him, which I would expect nothing less from the Grass GOAT and number two seed in his own backyard. However it took him four sets rather than the three set beat-down Rafa gave him at RG a month earlier to take the career H2H on Rafa's court to 6 - 0. Now THAT is how you defend your own turf.

In terrible conditions nonetheless we know Rogers recent record vs Rafa ;) and that Rafa is nearly unbeatable on clay i know that. But for some guy to try and trash Fed v Anderson is lame not to mention Fed would have been in Final of RG not for playing Rafa before

The set he lost were played better the ones he won (first 2).

I thought the level displayed in sets 1 and 2 was dreadful, from both. Rafa was just a little more clutch.

His returns tactic was atrocious, as usual, and it drained his energy tank even though he was winning these sets.

Medvedev was camping 5 feet behind the baseline and Rafa couldn't execute a correct drop shot to save his life.

He almost blew it.

And people said the Wimbledon final was worse quality..........

Not sure what terrible conditions or Kevin Anderson have to do with what we're talking about. Nor does it matter if Fed would have made the RG final if Rafa were on the other side of the draw, the same can be said for Rafa at Wimbledon so I'm not sure what your point there is.

Of course it had impact. From that point onward, Medvedev never knew before hitting a first serve if Nadal would try to return it or just throw his hands in the air and ask demand a redo.

Lol ridiculous. Isn't it funny how Medveded didn't seem to have a problem with it?.

Being up a break in a set and still losing the set doesnt automatically mean 'choking'.
The opponent could have ended up raising his level and winning the set too.
Know your definitions,
The '17 AO final definitely wasnt a choke. Rogi raised his level to preposterous heights after being down a break. He won it a lot more than Rafa losing it.
Come to think of it, even the '12 AO final, I honestly dont remember Nadal playing that badly after being up a break, so maybe that wasnt a choke either

Yes, but that doesnt mean he 'choked'. It was just a shot he unfortunately missed. What I want to know is if he played poor tennis in the 5th set to constitute it being a choke. I really dont remember that happening

I don't entirely consider playing poor tennis as choking.

To me, it's when a player is playing well enough to put themselves in the winning position, then start to miss routine shots during crucial moments when the time comes to close out the match.
