ATP Week of 4/1: Houston, Estoril, Marrakech

Thought I'd start a thread. May not get much traction, we'll see. These 250s are sandwiched between two Masters - Miami and Monte Carlo - and the biggest names aren't playing. But we're hardcore tennis fans, so I thought why not start a thread.

Houston always looks like an intimate and accessible tournament.

Crapovalov needs to retire. One of the worst clay sets I’ve seen any human being play. Horrific.

Don‘t care until BULLDOS returns to claim his Nth French Open.

Thiem-Gasquet will be a bit of a throwback. I like Richard, but would like to see Thiem get back to something resembling his old form on clay. I'm not sure that will happen though.

Wonderkid Fonseca has lost to the world #188 qualifier Choinski in Estoril. To add insult to injury, the guy he lost to is BRITISH.

Yeah, he is Finnish. False dawn exposed and now in terminal decline.
Losing to a servebot on clay... Qualifier better beat Hurkacz to redeem him.

Great idea to sum op this weeks tournaments in one thread, appreciated. And attention to other tennis players not named (.......) :)

Is becoming ATP500 next year and Estoril disappearing :-( ?

I hope fellow countryman BVDZ can get out of his slump but has to take a rather big hurdle called Ruud
Winning against Coria is a hopeful sign ...

R. Carballes Baena vs N. Moreno De Alboran - Marrakech.
This match is one of the loudest grunt/moan matches I've heard since Azarenka v. Sharapova days.

But I swear, I remember, so many ATP Clay Court matches in the past have always brought out this kind of moaning/groaning. Exertion?
Goodness.

Hurkacz advancing relatively easily in Estoril. If he had a huge forehand to follow up that first or second serve, he would be tough to beat for anyone on clay. That 2nd serve kicker is incredibly powerful and reliable.

Repentance of the Sinners :):happydevil:

A terrible decision was just made in the Borges Garin match. A point that should either have been replayed or gone to Borges went to Garin instead. The commentators on Tennis TV were appalled, especially as it would have been a break for Borges.

What a massive c.o.c.k up and Garin not necessarily helping there.

The explanation given to the press by the supervisor is that the umpire thought the last ball from garin was in, that's why he gave him the point. This is the ball:

Let that sink in.

Thanks Hurkacz for getting this cheater Garin out of the tournament.
I know Garin is probably desperate for a result given he has such a long lay off and it feels like he's been gone since 2022 but these kinds of actions really do turn people off players so I hope he reflects and doesn't continue in these ways. I don't remember him being a bad sport previously, I feel he's always been fairly low key on court so I was very surprised to see his name brought up around such negativity.

Wow, Martinez' Challenger grind is seemingly paying off. 1 set apiece versus Ruud in the SFs of Estoril. I'd like to see the winner win the title, but especially Ruud as it seems he's really dropped off since last year's RG.

Thiem thrashed by RBA in MC Masters 1000 qualies. I do think he will start to consider retirement in the next year or so if things don't improve substantially. It's such a shame.
Also, I wonder how long Schwartzman will continue playing for - he just seems to lose most of the time now and it's been going on for ages.
