Awful tennis commentary

Do you have some commentators you really hate when they're on about Tennis.

I.e. me, I hate, these, commentators.

Example of bad commentary:

"I wonder, the question that I have, is, as he, both players, know Nishikori is in the final, that is a huge opportunity, it's not Djokovic, it's not a Murray, it's not a Nadal, and Roger's going I almost won Wimbledon a little while ago, I know I got Nishikori if I beat this guy. How much kind of an element of this tournament sitting right here for me add to..."

I know Nishikori and Cilic is embarrassing compared to "Big 3", but come on this is some TTW user commentating, I mean he is biased on Fed's behalf, and be biased in favor of Nadal if he instead of Federer.

I don't know his name, but that commentator has always been one of my least favorite. He says outlandish BS and contradicts himself. Like Mats Wilander without the Slams.

It evens kind of ruins the fact that USO uploads finals like UO 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2019, because the commentary is so extremely bad,

Andrew Castle on the BBC, and any female commentator: Evert, Shriver, Navratilova.... Carillo. Jimmy Arias is dreadful, Justin Gimmelstob in the past was super obnoxious.

in fairness, those are the USO's commentators. They're not on TV, so not exactly the A-team. You'll only hear them if you stream the matches on the website.

And fwiw, I like when a commentator says something true like that about the Nishikori element. I don't think it was rude to Kei at all. There's no way Cilic and Federer's eyes didn't go wide when they saw world #1 Djokovic lost and it's #10 Nishikori waiting instead. It's disingenuous to pretend there wasn't a huge difference between facing Kei instead of Novak. I don't want my commentators lying to me in the hopes of selling a narrative that Kei is a really tough opponent so you better tune in on Sunday.

Shriver and Arias are the all time worst, hands down. Leif Shiras and Paul Annacone are terrible too but not quite as bad.

We need more of Courier, Knowles, Roddick etc in the booth. Blake is ok but kind of boring.

I don't think Edberg or Drysdale were particularly good (and many hate Carillo too obviously) but to me they represented a bygone era of tennis and I'll always have a nostalgic soft spot for them and those broadcasts. Drysdale/PMac at AO or Enberg/Carillo/Mac at USO is just too iconic.

The crews with Robinson/Mac (RG, Wimby, and USA USO) and Fowler/PMac/BG/Cahill(mostly post 08 AO) were the best.

I hadn't noticed - I'll keep an ear out now. By Australian standards, he's pretty good and does host a lot of our sports broadcasts. It's nice to have someone hosting who has been there and done it.

I absolutely detest the USO ESPN team. How can anyone expect the audience handle that much in your face commercialism is beyond me.

Since I go for streams, I usually had to bear with them.
But now I usually mute my stream.

Well, commentator is right... Federer best chance for title is some Nishikori in final, or some Nalbandians, or Hewitts, or RodDickss...
Nadal or Novak in final? Well, that is most of the time just another lose for opportunist goat... ;)

I believe in this case it was tune in on Monday. ;)

Well different strokes for different folks--I don't know what the poster's criteria are but these four are my favorites for their KNOWLEDGE of the game. They've all been there with the best in the top ten. I listen to them to learn and not for pretty voices.

I was a fan of Becker but he is godly awful behind the mic. He gives absolutely no insight to matches and rehashes the standard tennis commentary phrases often.

The BBC commentary team at Wimbledon. Tennis in the UK is a bit of an old boys and girls club and alas that is true of the BBC. They hire their favourite ex-players, regardless of there ability behind a mic. Henman is as dull as you would expect, Boris Becker is hopeless and offer no insights. Marion Bartoli is just as bad. Then we have Andrew Castle, his goto is to explain the rules of tennis every 5 minutes and tell us their are 4 slams, repeatedly.

The BBC team are constantly telling us that Wimbledon is the greatest tournament and asking non-Brits if they think it is the biggest. A bit like some kid who keeps asking whether he is cool and needs constant reassurance that they are. Simple rule, if you have to ask, you probably aren't.

Of course the awful commentary team is just a symptom of the wider malaise in British tennis. You only to look at how few Tournaments there are outside of Wimbledon and the grass court season. No master level event in Britain, very little indoors, few challenger and future level events. Very little investment in grass roots tennis either.

Got to feel sorry for the ladies.

If you stay out in the sun for 20 years you get a face perfect for radio or commentary.

If you have never seen any of the commentators up close, hang around outside the commentary box and you will be seriously shocked. And I don’t just mean Wilander... Chris Evert has clearly been wrecked by the sun

It's nothing to do with the sound of their voice and the others I mentioned have far more tennis knowledge as well.

I am a big fan of Daniela. I had seen her up close in Brisbane, she had not escaped from sun damages, but she still looks mighty fine, especially in front of the camera and behind a decent amount of make-ups.

It's not being biased, atleast not in this particular case. He said exactly what Roger would have been thinking when Novak went out. Everyone was thinking that come on.
He is not really insulting Nishikori or Cilic, he is just saying that Roger knows they are less of a challenge than Djokodalrray.

And Novak's best chance is to avoid strong players like Nishikori it seems. Pouille would be good.

Worst ones are Shriver, Drysdale, Navratalova, Everet, and Austin. Yuck to all of them and they have no clue what the hell they are talking about.

Watching some USO matches online are the best. Some of the matches on the outside courts have NO announcers. It is nice to crank up the TV and just hear the ball, sneakers screeching, the chair calling the score, and the crowd applause. No announcers telling me what I just saw with my own two eyes.
I am hoping that technology will hurry up and get to the point where we have the option to simply mute the announcers completely.

Moreover all the events of note have been concentrated in bloody London ie. Wimbledon, Queen's, WTF, all just a few miles from each other. Only exception is Eastbourne, even further south than London. Nothing for us 'provincial hicks' living up north.

Strongly disagree, listening to Navratalova and Austin is like gettinga master classes in tennis--Drysdale and Evert I'm sure know their tennis but don't convey it. My other favorites for sharing their well-founded tennis KNOWLEDGE are Jimmy Arias, Leif Shiras and Paul Annecone.

Hint : Put on close captioning and you don't have to hear their voices. I learn a lot listening to Tracey Austin, Chandra Rubin, Lindsay Davenport, Jimmy Arias, and Nico Pereira amongst others--they've ALL been there and know their stuff!--Brett Haber reads the ATP player's notes well.

Believe me these commentators are saints compared to the Israeli ones. I often find myself yelling at them through the TV because they say the silliest and most ignorant things constantly
