I'm about to do a little test.

Which CoPoly will work best in a nat gut- CoPoly hybrid, where the natty gut is always in the mains

I have 2 sets of Luxilon Alu Power ROUGH 1.25, 2 sets of Luxilon Adrenaline 1.20 smooth, 2 sets of Signum Pro Hyperion 1.18 smooth and 2 sets of Signum Pro Tornado 1.17 twisted & edged copoly.

I use Babolat VS team 17 natty gut in the mains in all tests.

The test will take some time - I only play 4 hours a week currently.

What do you think will perform best in the racquets I plan to use:

Babolat Pure Storm Tour GT 98 SQ" 16X20 and Wilson BLX 95 SQ" 6.1 18X20

I've always favored a smooth thicker copoly as cross string in a nat gut hybrid, but now I will experiment a bit with one racquet with each setup in and see how it performs.

I wonder if the thinner smooth 1.18/1.20 copoly will outperfrom the thicker 1.25 Rough in the spin department or not ?

What do you think - take a guess 8)

Not speaking from experience, but I think that the thinnest strings would perform best. The Lux's are out because of their relatively short lives. That leaves me to conclude that the Hyperion 1.18 will perform best.

Uno - you're obsessed with Hyperion/Tornado when they're really nothing special in the bite/spin/crispness department.

I wasn't particularely looking for spin in a poly, when I opted for Hyperion. Just a nice smooth stiff poly a cross string :)

Now I'm experimenting a bit......again

I only use each of my racquets for 6-8 hours, before I restring them, which is why I consider Luxilon once again :)

I tried the Hyperion in a cross this past summer, and while I liked it, there seemed to be minimal difference between it & Topspin Concept Pure, which was much cheaper by the real.

I am real interested to hear what you think about the Tornado and how it compares to Hyperion. I've been considering trying a twisted string in the cross.

The thinner copoly cross will give more spin escpecially if its stiff or textured but the thicker copoly in the cross will give more control and less spin.

Thats my guess Uno.

Took your advice and used Black Code 16 as a cross with my Tonic 16 mains. Really liked the way it played but its the first time I have ever used a poly and my arm/elbow is a little tender. I have never experienced this with either a full gut or synthetic gut set up. My question is how will the hiperion 17 play differently to the Black Code 16 as a cross with gut mains?

Not much different I think. They are both pretty soft polys - so maybe you should avoid poly completely in the future, if you get soreness from just using a poly in the crosses with gut mains

Maybe you should try a poly-multi combi string like the Tecnifibre Promix or the Multifeel as a cross string with the gut mains and see how that goes :)

Try using pro hurricane 18g
Lasts about 10-13 hours and has awesome control, spin, power

I have tried that string - and while it's very soft feeling for a poly, it loses tension and playability far too fast for me.

Currently testing Lux TIMO 122 and 117 - stiffer string, but keeps playability longer than 95% of all the polys I've tried so far, only Hyperion, SPPP and Silverstring is in the same boat as TIMO in this regard.

This looks like a good place to post this...

In general, do you people prefer a thin cross or a thick cross? Don't worry what the mains are, or what type of string the crosses are... what thickness do you prefer on the crosses?

In general, you should have regard to the mains. If I had a thick main, I'd look for a thin cross, and vice versa. From experience, thick strings in the mains and crosses (1.30/1.30) don't work me, and neither do thin strings (1.17/1.18). Depending on the racquet, I tend go with a 1.30 multi/gut with a 1.18/1.20 poly.

I can't believe Uno got banned. Hopefully it is temporary. He is very knowledgable of strings and hybrids. Please give him another chance mods.:)

ClubHoUno, I'm running VS 17 mains and ALU Power in the crosses right now. I love it. But the crosses are going out to fast and I never break strings.

My next try is going to be Pacific Poly Force Classic 17 in the crosses.

But now I too an wondering about the thick/thin question. Does anybody else think thin/thick or thick/thin is significatnly better than thin/thin or thick/thick? I know.. sounds wierd, but you know what I mean.

EDIT: Oh crap, ClubHoUno got banned? That's tragic.

Allow me to continue this train of thought for a minute... You like a thick multi/gut mains with a thin poly cross. Gotcha. So do I. And then if you look at other options... either way, the poly is thin and the multi/gut is thick, right? I can't think of a situation where a thin multi/gut would go well with a thick poly/s.gut!

Hmm... as I write this, I'm thinking about my rackets... I have one C10Pro strung with 18g Pro Hurricane mains and 17g Global Gut crosses (which hits like a dream) and I have another C10Pro strung with 17g Global Gut mains and 16g Pro Line II crosses. I guess I'm not following my rules at all!
