Black string - can you guess/suggest what this is?

Hi all,

Recently bought a PS 18x20 demo. Trying to find out what string it has. TW told me it is Head LYNX, (I bought a new racquet with this in it, and since sent the racquet back - long story). I attach three images - first one is the head LYNX, second the one Im trying to find out what it is, and third my Pure Storm strung with RPM Blast for context.

Pure Strike - Head Lynx (can clearly see this is grey) - TW told me this is the same string as the demo

Pure Strike (the string I am trying to find out) - Shiny Black

Pure Storm - RPM Blast 17 for reference

The string Im trying to discover is shiny black seems 18 gauge..
Thanks all,

Darren

Not a lot of 18 ga strings out there and even fewer black ones.

Dunlop Black Widow was my first thought
Volkl Cyclone is another.

That’s assuming it’s poly. I think Gosen makes a black 18 ga syngut and so does Dunlop.

Thanks for the reply. You dont think its RPM Blast? Also it looks like there was never any writing on it. Not to sound stupid, but how would I tell if its a not a poly? Ive only ever used RPM Blast or Hurricane Tour long ago.

It could be RPM blast. But looking at TW RPM has writing on it.

Hard to know anything about a string of it has no labels. If you have a magnifying glass look at the cross section of the string. If you see only one fiber it’s a monofilament and most likely a poly. But there are other monofilament strings out there that aren’t polyester.

Given how popular RPM is that’s a pretty good bet. But Cyclone and Black silk are popular too.

So if I look and see it fraying then its a syn gut?

The string plays quite soft, good feedback. Plush even, good spin, power and control.

I think the 18g rpm doesnt have the engravinn, only the 16g and 17g

No. But a syngut or other multi will consist of a bunch of smaller fibers bound together whereas a poly will be just one fat filament.

You may be able to see these by looking at the cross section the string at the end of it.

Could be, that is very shiny
Hi Darren, is the string shaped? Hard to tell from picture. From a quick glance, the PS17 with mystery string could have Genesis Black Magic. I purchased a racquet recently that had Black Magic in it. I had never played with it before and first thing upon looking at string bed my thoughts were "wow it is shiny black". This one in your picture looks very very similar. I played with RPM blast for the longest time, never found it to be that shiny by comparison. And yes, Mosquitobite is a very valid guess as well. Just my $0.02.

I don't think it's a poly. You can see subtle striations as if it had a wrap, like most synthetic guts or multifiliments have. There are so many black strings, its hard to tell. Gosen OG Micro would be my guess, only because it's a fairly inexpensive string, so higher probability of it being used.
