Okay I really want to cut out my strings and they are DEAD but my father insists that I only restring when they break!! How can I break them easily? They feel terrible!!

i've heard from many people that playing with dead strings can be hazardous to your arm/elbow which is why i never do it. just tell him that continuing to play with dead strings could cause health issues in the future. i can't imagine a father ignoring that

Get a pair of scissors and cut it a bit (not all the way through) at the area you hit most.

My daughter plays and I will re-string anytime she asks. If she does not ask.. I still do it 4-6 times a year.

Here is a very old rule. I consider this to be a minimum now:

If you play 5 times a week.. you need to re-string at least 5 times a season. If I was using poly.. I would re-string 10 times.

You play better with fresh strings and it helps protects your arm.

If he is worried about the cost.. buy a low end machine. Gamma X-2 would be my pick.. and reel of low cost and softer poly (Big Hitter Blue) and OG Micro and string yourself. You can go full poly, full syn or hybrid (and reverse the hybrid). You can entertain different tensions.. etc. Go for it.

Cost. $200.00 for Machine, $80.00 for BHB and $30.00 for OG Sheep. These are loose "Ball-Park" figures.

That is the way I would go.. and most here see the wisdom.

We are not worrying about cost, and I have two coaches at my club, one of them being a stringer and is probably now stringing my Graphite Select up with Red Code and NXT Tour but my father just insists that they break first.
I play in a club and play matches 3 times a week for 2 hours a day and every day of the week I would practise in my garage for 2 hours or more a day. I hate my strings on my main stick now and they just WONT BREAK!!

If he is not worried about cost... then what is the reason??? Sure sounds like cost..

I would be worried about your arm and level of play..

It's not cost because I say all the time that I will pay for the strings and for the stringer to string my racquet and he says no again.

So.. your dad is just nuts??? and this is a control issue right?

No he's not nuts.
He doesn't know that much about tennis.
Well, he knows nothing about tennis.
But he says that it's new strings and you shouldn't string it again when I've had the strings for around 4 or more months.

It sounds like your Dad is trying to get you away from burning cash just for the sake of trying new strings. Are you trying new setups each time you have your racket restrung?

why don't you show this thread to your father?

ps - if you do, make it clear to him that you disregarded all of the poor advice about cutting/weakening the string so that it will snap quicker. show him that there is evidence that playing with worn out strings can pose a health issue.

if that doesn't work, well, then, you need to respect your father's wishes until you turn 18.

good luck

Is your name Andre Kirk Agassi?

If you cut the strings or make come damage with a scissor or something, the stringer won't even check that. Don't worry about him telling that to your father.

amount of time you spend playing should see the strings breaking within the month. dad has no influence when paying out of your own pocket. just get it done.

best bet is choosing thinner gauge 17,18 of multi and staying away from 16L polys. guaranteed to break quickly.

buying a stringing machine advice is good, assuming you're going through three/four restringings a month.

I wouldn't start going down the path of deception. Let the strings break naturally. You'll probably play better tennis this way knowing you didn't deceive your dad.

Maybe if you were using less expensive strings your father wouldn't mind getting it strung more often. It's worth asking him. If that doesn't work, use your allowance or get a part time job.

FWIW, i play gosen ogsm 17g. I cut it out after about 6-8 matches (or match length hitting sessions) and sometimes less, sometimes more.

yes, i do have my own stringing machine and yes the string is not even $3 per set (reels).

when i was in HS in the mid-late 80's (tennis team) i'd re-string at least one racket (usually had 2 or 3) every week (also using cheap syngut, i think i was getting it for $1.80 a set or so).

fresh strings are a good thing!

Dude im 14 lol

I broke some one time "accidentally" by hitting the stringbed on the little pole attached to the net post that holds the scorecard thingies. It only took like 2 light hits, and snap! My parents thought I broke the strings, and I doubt any stringer would notice or even care how you broke them.

depending on your level. And in most situations, your dad is right. Everyone has to make due with what we already have. Unless the strings are breaking your arms, or dead, play with them.

If your dad isn't looking at this msg, use fine sandpaper on any of the center intersections. It'll look like a natural snap. =)

4month old strings are pretty dead, unless its natural gut (at least in my experience).

Glad you got your racquet restrung, dead strings especially poly just suck to play with. I've actually never broken a string yet after how many years of playing, guess I just don't hit hard enough lol.
