Cash Makes Doubles Comeback in Chennai

Former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash has stepped out of retirement to play doubles with rising Indian player Karan Rastogi. The wild card pair will play second-seeded German duo Rainer Schuettler and Alexander Waske in the first round. Cash is at the Chennai Open to do television commentary.

"I am looking forward to playing with Karan, who I have heard much about. I am happy to be back in Chennai where I played in 1997, Cash told Indian web site Sify.com.

Rastogi said: “It is a dream to play alongside a legend like Pat Cash. I will try to learn as much as possible from this great player. I am sure this experience will stand me in good stead for the future.”

Cash, the 1987 Wimbledon singles champion, won seven singles and 12 doubles titles during his career. He was also the Wimbledon doubles runner-up in 1984 and ’85.

Martin Damm and Leander Paes, who have joined forces for the 2006 season, are the top-seeded doubles team at the Chennai Open.

Maybe the old farts are going to make doubles their cause celeb. Good for them.

Best sign ever at Wimbledon

Cash is better than a Czech

At the Cash/Lendl final.

vantagepoint - this is not intended as a slam to the Czech people.

Too bad; Cash was alway a load of fun to watch- really athletic guy with great volleys...
As an aside, I wonder if Hewitt had to pay a royalty fee to Cash when he sported the checkerboard bandana last summer...

Who the hell is Rastogi? At least Mac picked a good player to team up with in San Jose. Cash should've asked Woodbridge or Rafter.

LOL! Woodbridge is retired and hasn't played since Wimbledon. I doubt that he's kept up any sort of practice schedule in his first months of retirement.

Even more so with Rafter - he's retired, hasn't played in ages.

Yeah, but I think Cash/Woodbridge could be decent (for at least one match) I bet Woodbridge could team up with anybody & give a good match.

The Rafter comment was more of a wish-a chance to see Cash play with his 90s equivalent. Rafter played the Australian Open doubles last year didn't he?

I know Pat's played some TeamTennis recently (last year or so)...but you're abo****ely right Moose- how cool would it have been to see the two Pats on the same court? sigh...

Love the Cash-cheque thing.
Why Rastogi? Probably just a smart and convenient publicity play for the tournament and their federation -- pusing some homegrown talent.

Now, Chennai is the new name for the city of Madras, right?
Does that mean those J.Crew shorts I had in the late eighties are now called Chennai plaid?

I only saw a five-second clip of Cash, and that was in his 1984 USO SF with Lendl. It looked like he hit a perfect backhand volley but Lendl somehow ran it down and hit an unbelievable running backhand.

As far as his trademark bandana goes, Hewitt was dropped by Nike last summer and for a short while he wore unbranded clothes. He requested a copy of Cash's bandana IIRC to pay homage. Cash was actually surprised but agreed. Cash was starting to show signs of liking Hewitt more than he has at Wimbledon, but since then I think Cash has liked Hewitt more.

Cash was invited to play at the tournament by the organisers and he was asked to partner that indian youngster.

Oh drool.

I still haven't got over Pat Rafter's retirement. He was such a great bloke to watch. But him and Pat Cash on the same court would be fabulous.

I vividly remember PC's Wimbledon win. I cheered him all the way.

There's something about Aussie tennis players, you gotta love their attitude. Newcombe and Roche were my earliest idols in the tennis world.

:D
