Draw is up. Nadal plays winner of Sock/Nishioka in the 2nd round. will probably play Wednesday. Interesting first round match in Anderson-Brooksby(rematch of Newport final). Querrey-Nishikori is another good first round matchup.

doubles draw is pretty impressive. some teams:
Korda/Sinner
Sock/Querrey
Kyrgios/Tiafoe
Dimtrov/Paul

Incredible gulf in rankings from #1 seed The Nadal (#3) and #2 seed Auger Aliassime (#15).

The draw fills in a bit after that with the 16 seeded players (all get byes in the 48-man draw) all ranked in the top 54.

Defending champion (want to take a guess?) is Nick Kyrgios. He is scheduled to play Mackenzie McDonald in 1R and could possibly offer a very interesting SF matchup with his BFF #1 seed.

Another WC is offered to the unlaundered Jacques Chaussette who sagged badly in Atlanta but gets to tour America on his WCpalooza trek. If he beats Nishioka in 1R he gets a chance to make the RPM guns gets calibrated before playing the #1 seed Nadal.

Other WCs were issued to American youngsters Brandon Nakashima (turns 20 Monday!) and Jenson Brooksby. An odd choice for the 4th WC is Feliciano Lopez (never a finalist or champion in singles or doubles). Brooksby gets a rematch with Kevin Anderson after losing the Newport final.

There’s a very interesting potential 2R matchup between the defending champ and the reigning champion of the tank. The tank champion just has to show up (least deserving 1R bye EVER!); the defending champion has to beat Double Mac.

Will Rafa even try hard on this tournament to win it ?? he might be just out there for some practice or just to get some matches in and tank it ??;)

Galan defeated Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-3.
Post-pandemic Paul on HCs is a hot mess. Elahi Galan is a good litmus test: before Covid shut everyone down, Paul had beaten the Colombian 2x in straight sets, one of those in his run from qualies to QF at Acapulco’20. That qualies-to-late round streak was the second of the early season (made the Adelaide SFs by winning 5 matches).

Since the restart Paul is 5-10 with one winning streak of two matches on Rotterdam’s indoor HCs.

Nice win for Brooksby, evening the score with Anderson in straight sets to match his loss in straights in the Newport final.

An all-American youngster 2R match is now set up with Brooksby facing Tiafoe.

Brooksby vs. Tiafoe will be interesting, what is it about Brooksby's game that's so annoying ?
The expected power game from a tall guy growing up on NorCal hard courts never materializing?

He’s a SactoTomic without the fast cars, loose women and assorted baggage.

Nishikori is through to 2R with a straight set win vs Sam Q.

Sock and Nishioka somehow made it to a TB in the first set… terrible HC stats with 2 breaks each and neither above 56% service points won.

Nishioka eked out the TB but proceeded to injure himself again and has retired slightly ahead but behind big time, 7-6(4) 0-4 rip cord.

RPM guns needs to be calibrated for 2R Wednesday…Sock vs The Nadal.

Feli looks 10 years younger when he's clean shaven. Still rocking the all white Wimbledon kit. It's hot, don't blame him.

Nakashima continues his run of good form.

WTF happened with Thompson and Ymer ? I thought double hits were only illegal if they were deliberate anyway ?

Literally -- what happened?
When they shook hands they were chest to chest and the ref jumped between them and really had to push them apart, apparently Thompson was upset about a double hit, felt like Ymer should have called it on himself. Ymer was gesturing to the ref like "it's his call"...I didn't see the actual point, just the dust up at the end.

So I know Nadal has been on a bit of a break, but Jacky boy is going to get absolutely destroyed tomorrow, right?
