There was a lot of exciting play yesterday at Wimbledon in the second-round match between the no. 25 seed, Alex De Minaur, and the American Steve Johnson. The 19-year-old Australian in particular was a bundle of activity, darting from side to side of the court, often bending, stretching and digging, especially in the backhand corner, in an effort to get the ball back over the net. It was also good to see him move forward at times, albeit not always wisely.
Steve Johnson seemed to be the less active of the two players, yet he defended well and his favourite forehand stroke brought him many winners. His backhand, which he often ran around, was reliably sufficient. The American struggled on serve throughout the fifth and final set, but his 19-year-old opponent couldn’t quite take advantage of this frailty, not even in the seventh game when he hit a second serve out over the opposite baseline on break point. In the next game Johnson had a break point of his own – and took it immediately.
In the ninth game of the final set Johnson was down 0-30 and 30-40, but again produced some excellent play to hold serve and win what had been an engrossing encounter, 3-6, 7-6, 6-3, 3-6 6-3.
