What a great fight vs Rublev although I felt for the Russian as he had played a match earlier in the day and was clearly exhausted by third. I like the fight in De Minuar and the gritty not going away attitude. One thing that I dislike though is him pumping fists etc at opponents mistakes. But I feel he didn't do that much vs Rublev.

ADM returns to action at this week's Winston-Salem Open in North Carolina. The young Aussie is the no. 12 seed in the singles event and faces a tricky opener against the Russian Daniil Medvedev. A good run in Winston-Salem and at the upcoming U.S. Open could see ADM become the top-ranked Australian male.

A bit quiet here, it seems...
@stringertom: Your thoughts on his match vs Cilic?

Gutted but also proud of him.

Nice catch there of mentor and protégé!

This was a golden opportunity to move much closer to Tsits and Shapo on the Young Gun podium. I'm still high on his potential but he doesn't have quite the weaponry to make a run into the Hewitt realm.

The question remains: which of this teenish triumvirate will finally break through for a title of any kind???

He's actually pretty close in rank to Shapo now. I'm going with Tsitsipas for 1st title.

Yeah Tsitsi is the pick of the bunch, 9/10 athlete and awesome game. I have De Minaur ahead of Shapo, much more balanced game and incredible athleticism. Impressive mentality too.

My order is Tsits, Shapo and then ADM...just not enough power to the Aussie's game and hasn't shown the goods vs the top 10 yet...biggest win so far is vs Raonic. His record vs Nadal, JMDP, Thiem and Isner on Tour is 0-4 without winning a set and taking only 21 games in the 10 sets. He did take to a 5th set TB in DC vs Zedraffe but lost. Shapo has beaten Nadal and JMDP.

Totally get that, I am a Shapo fan but he frustrates me so much. I just think speed kills in this sport, and Alex has the most out of anyone pretty much.

I'm watching Cilfin right now and was hoping that speed would kill but it's not working for McFly.:(

Although he lost a three-set match to Stefanos Tsitsipas earlier today at the Japan Open in Tokyo, Alex De Minaur will become the new Australian number one next week with a singles ranking on the verge of the Top 30.

De Minaur was showing such maturity in his game. Each time he was broken he stepped up his game and broke back.

Just an incredibly meteoric rise to prominence for the 18-year-old kid from Oz. Into an ATP250 final five weeks shy of his 19th birthday after another impressive run through a good part of the draw at Brisbane the previous week (SFs by beating Steve Johnson and Raonic).

A win vs qualifier and finalist Daniil Medvedev would vault AdM at the cusp of the top 100 in the rankings and he would surpass the other Alex as the youngest ATP title holder this past decade and join ATGs like Nadal and his DC captain Hewitt on the list of post-millennium 18-year-old winners.

Let's hear it for the boy walking amongst the men!

No luck for ADM earlier today in Indian Wells where he was beaten in the second round, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2, by the unheralded 25-year-old American qualifier Marcos Giron.

Alex De Minaur has been ill recently but returned to play earlier today at the Estoril tournament in Portugal, where he is the no. 6 seed. In first-round action the Australian was beaten by the home hope Joao Domingues, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.

Do you know what the illness was?

There was a lot of exciting play yesterday at Wimbledon in the second-round match between the no. 25 seed, Alex De Minaur, and the American Steve Johnson. The 19-year-old Australian in particular was a bundle of activity, darting from side to side of the court, often bending, stretching and digging, especially in the backhand corner, in an effort to get the ball back over the net. It was also good to see him move forward at times, albeit not always wisely.

Steve Johnson seemed to be the less active of the two players, yet he defended well and his favourite forehand stroke brought him many winners. His backhand, which he often ran around, was reliably sufficient. The American struggled on serve throughout the fifth and final set, but his 19-year-old opponent couldn’t quite take advantage of this frailty, not even in the seventh game when he hit a second serve out over the opposite baseline on break point. In the next game Johnson had a break point of his own – and took it immediately.

In the ninth game of the final set Johnson was down 0-30 and 30-40, but again produced some excellent play to hold serve and win what had been an engrossing encounter, 3-6, 7-6, 6-3, 3-6 6-3.

So disappointed that Alex is out at Wimbledon ): Here's hoping he bounces back throughout the rest of the year and also at the U.S. Open! :)

Well, there's always the doubles, and in Washington this week Alex De Minaur has teamed up with his compatriot and doubles expert, John Peers. Together they have played well as an unseeded pair to reach the semi-finals where, later on Saturday, they will take on the Dutch-Romanian combination of Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau.

De Minaur will be the #7 seed at the upcoming Zhuhai Championships 250. He faces compatriot John Millman in the opening round starting on Monday.

Millman has reached the Kaohsiung (TPE) Challenger final and is to play another Oz man, Marc Polmans, in just a few hours.

I would love to see a strong and long rivalry between Alex De Minaur and Denis Shapovalov! :) The match they played yesterday was one of the best I have seen - particularly that first set - and I hope these two become top 5 players really soon! :)

I agree, congratulations to Australia who I am now hoping for, I really enjoyed the Shapo/Demon match despite the result.

Very entertaining match. Great shotmaking. What a fight by ADM. Down but not out. Loved it.

Until yesterday, the last Australian man to win a singles title at Devonshire Park in Eastbourne was Ken Rosewall in 1970. In those days the tournament was known as the South of England Championships, and it originally concluded the outdoor season in Great Britain, in September.

It was a wonderful match, worthy of a final. In contrast, Medvedev/Querry was a bit of a snoozer. Meds came alive the last 20 minutes or so but I wasn’t really interested by then and I’m a fan of Medvedev.

Majoring in Minaurity. Korda kicks the Eastbourne champion out of SW19 in a very interesting and tight 4-set match completed just before the rain set in.

Dial back the schedule, Alex!

A fascinating match on Saturday in second-round action at the Masters Series 1000 tournament in Madrid, where the no. 10 seed, Alex De Minaur, takes on world no. 512 Rafael Nadal. When the same two players met in Barcelona a couple of weeks ago the Australian, playing with great confidence and self-belief, emerged the winner by 7-5, 6-1.

Although the Spaniard currently leads their head-to-head 3-2, De Minaur had also won their previous encounter, at the United Cup in 2023. A victory for the Australian tomorrow would thus see him tie their head-to-head at 3-all.
