Spain against Serbia as well as USA-Switzerland should be interesting ties.Long time since the US was not huge favourite to win their home tie

I guess I'm the only one that's not happy about USA/Swiss and Serbia/Spain being drawn together so early :???:

Not that they won every time they were a huge favorite at home ;-)
That's only really if Federer chooses to play. If he doesn't, I would think the US would be pretty well favored in that tie. Even though Wawrinka is playing well, I would expect 4-1 for the US. If Federer does play, I think 3-2 either way. It would all come down to one of Wawrinka's matches I think.

Very, very crappy draw for Serbia.Ah well, maybe Nadal won't show up or something otherwise I don't like our chance that much.Djokovic can certainly beat anyone other than Nadal and maybe Zimonjic can pull us trough doubles but who's gonna bring the third point? Tipsarevic had a lot of injuries lately and is not in good form and I'm not sure if Troicki can beat some of those Spaniards on clay.

The problem with playing against Spain if they're hosting is that they basically start with a 2-0 lead cause of Nadal,he's that dominant on clay and wins on that surface even if he has off days.

If Federer and Wawrinka both play and are in good shape after the start of the season it could be 3-2 but also 4-1 for the swiss. The US don`t have one guaranteed point.Maybe Wawrinka-Roddick would favour Roddick but the doubles is no guarantee with the Bryans against Fed/Waw and Federer can beat both guys.

you're not, at least with me...strange and fascinating at the same time..yes we'll see who's healthy and willing to play....joker and nadal would have to follow a month-plus of hard with a clay tie then head to indian wells and more in miami....anybody think rafa might use this as a reason to play south american clay swing (one tourney) in feb. instead of dubai (nah, too much dough) or rotterdam?...esp if he slips up down under...i know there was talk of this previously

Right up against March Madness for TV.

Even if USA plays at home, is anyone else concerned about trouble finding the matches televised?

So should calendar yet again be completely messed up so no events ever will overlap with March Madness. Nobody gives a damn about March Madness outside the US.

Actually March Madness won't really be in full swing that week. There will be conference tournaments but the first game of the tournament are usually mid March.

I'm sad about the US/Swiss Spain/Serbia match ups as well. Would have liked them to be a bit later.

Swiss fortunes all in Federer hands, if in form he can win both singles and doubles.

LMAO.......If Roger Federer does decide to play in this one then US could be out in the 1st round ?? Wonder if he will play or if he was faking it when he said he loves to play for his country ?

Hate to break it to you guys, but as long as they have choice of ground, Spain will destroy anyone they face. That definitely includes Serbia.

Switzerland vs Spain on clay would be no walk in the park for Spain. Federer / Wawrinka are excellent clay court players, and they are far stronger doubles players then anything Spain can put together.

Ferrer is no lock to take care of business, even at home.

Nadal however is a lock on 2 matches, and Almagro, Verdasco, and Lopez are pretty damn good on every surface. Almagro is the better choice on clay while Verdasco is a good slow HC player, and Lopez is excellent on fast surfaces like grass, indoor carpet, indoor hc, fast hc, etc.

Nadal-Robredo took this year's MC doubles title and Nadal-Moyà beat Federer-Wawrinka in Rome 2007, I think, so Spain can indeed line up a kick-a$s clay doubles team if needs be. However, making Nadal play the doubs could compromise his match against Fed, so it would be a difficult decision for Spain's captain. Ferrer owns the H2H with Wawrinka on clay, 3-1.

Anyway, some people said this tie could only happen in the finals, so it is an unlikely one.

Federer said he wanted to make D-Cup more of a priority, so it sounds as if he will commit more to it this year, we will see.

Really disappointed bout the draw. When I heard Argentina I was pretty glad cause it's a nice team and a friend of mine is a big fan of Nalbandian, but we drew away, so can't go... Really sad, hoped for a big team (USA, Spain, Argentina) at home

Spain would be the favourite at home to Switserland, but certainly no walk in the park there.

I wonder, if Switserland would have drawn USA at home, would they have chosen Clay? That would be smartest but I have a feeling Federer would feel too good to do that and willing to show he owns them on their favourite surface, which he likes himself better as well.

Davis Cup is a team event and for sure the Swiss would choose clay against the US.Pretty much wherever USA goes they play on clay. And Spain is favourite against any team at home. How long has it been since they lost a home tie?9 years?

I know it's a team event, but when Federer wants something he'll probably get it done in Switzerland. Luthi isn't the davis cup captain for nothing either, it's no secret he's a great friend of roger's and that's one of the main reasons he's the captain. I think they would play on clay, maybe also because Wawrinka is a very good claycourt player (Rome finals)

If Roger or Stan skips I call BS. This is perfect scheduling, no excuses for not playing. I would be not surprised if Nole or Rafa skipped it however.

Nice draw for Russia.

They've got a team that can adapt to any surface pretty well. Some countries might a one or two players who are comfortable on a particular surface but on the Spanish team everyone is pretty well rounded.

Well, I wouldn't say everyone on the spanish team is well-rounded, but they have enough people to pick from that they can field a strong team on any surface.

...and wow, Russia really did get a good draw. Romania should be an easy win, then either Sweden or Austria should also be beatable. Then in the semis, they'll likely face Spain - but probably face them at home, which will greatly shift the odds in their favor.

...of course, that's looking way forward. Maybe they'll suffer a shock upset. But still, great chance to get to the semis yet again, and maybe further.
