Depressed Federer fans check in here

I hope Nadal and Djokovic suffer absolutely brutal bone crushing losses over and over again until the end of their careers...They need to feel the same pain and agony. I hope their fans go through intense pain and suffering due to their heroes losses.
Don't worry. All players lose. That's the rule of the game.
OTOH, if there were a lot more Fedovic matches, that would mean Fed's longevity would go off the charts even more, so not a bad prospect, even from Fed fans' point of view.;)

Lets not go there. Being upset/angry/depressed over this outcome doesn't make a Federer fan less "real".

But nobody remembers second place. Federer handed this match on a silver platter for Djokovic. I didn’t think he was gonna win after blowing that.

Agree with you guys, I was so frustrated right after the match and still feeling the pain, but it is what it is. Federer didn't deserve to win after making so many simple mistakes against Djokovic. He should've won in 3. He had chances in every set and horrible forehand shanking kept on flowing. It was very tough to watch, personally, but he gave his all. I think this was his best chance at Wimbledon no.9, maybe his last, but I guess I should just hope he does a miracle during USO series. Winning Cincy and USO would make up for this for me.

At this point in his career Federer should seriously consider a sports psychologist to address how he falters when in this exact situation over and over again. I’m sure he’s never used one before because why would he. But obviously it’s something that he can’t overcome himself. So many athletes have employed them with great success. Fed’s physical game is still there even at his advanced age but his mentality when pressured against Djokovic is not. It just crumbles.

Serena needs one too.

Totally agree about the psychologist bit which I mentioned earlier too in the thread.

I was thinking a little more about this today. Thinking about it from Fed's perspective, he seems to have allowed emotions to rule i.e. too much burden of achievement regarding total Grand Slams. I appreciate that each GS is a very big bonus now in his life, but he seems to be fragile emotionally and placing burden of leaving behind an insurmountable legacy. That's just too much, because almost all his other tour players will surmount it (I think) - Nole and Rafa are not too far behind.

What’s annoying about this is how freely he played in 2017. At least the first half. He seemed so free of all his demons in Australia that year. Didn’t care if he dropped a set, he was back for the next one. Always willing to hit out no matter the score. It was so lovely. Now I think the effect of being so newly back from surgery, of feeling like he’s lucky just to be on court in the first place, has worn off and he’s back to his 2013-2016 days of getting super tight in big moments. Wish he could shake it off again.

Yeah totally. Basically, letting go would be the key. There's no limit to the burden one can take on oneself.
He has to let go of this obsession - I think it's secretively an obsession to not be #2 or #3 in the final GS tally, but that's just my hunch - even though I am a huge Fed fan. He might appear cool-as-a-cucumber in media, but deep down, he knows he might end up just a spot above Sampras in the final tally.

I would completely agree if this were a few years ago, but he beat Nadal on Friday, and had lots of chances to collapse but didn't. Plus he kept fighting after not serving it out. He never would have done that before.

True, but it's like he ran into a bull (Rafa), conquered it, and now ran into a mountain (Nole). He has no time to do this in parts like this. Not saying he didn't fight, but needs to keep sane. A few wisps of time and he gifted a GS to Nole.

In my opinion the difference between Fed’s approach to Rafa vs his approach to Djokovic is that Fed had already overcome that mental block against Rafa. The last time Rafa beat Fed off clay was the 2014 Australian Open. Then Fed came from behind in the 5th set of the AO ‘17 final to win and he has not looked back. And the solution to that problem was purely technical. The larger racquet, and the aggressive topspin backhand solved the problem. The issue with Nole has nothing with technique or racquets. On paper Fed was the better player in almost every single category. He played so well and had the match on racquet on so many occasions. But when it mattered the most ..... that’s mental. Maybe his mind went back to those 2 US Opens. Maybe he started thinking of the historical significance of winning his 9th Wimbledon. He froze, no question. A sports psychologist could help improve Fed’s mentality by 1% and that could have made the difference. Look how calm Nole is in difficult situations with his peace, love and tranquillity persona. The way Fed played that match you know he’s got more great tennis in him. He needs to get his mind right when he faces Djokovic again.

I doubt a sport's psychologist can help at this point. I'm sure he has seen many.

There are 2 issues:
1) Federer's stress response is more sensitive than Novak's.
2) Federer cares more than Novak and that's partly why he gets more nervous.

I honestly don't think Novak cares as much about losing as Federer. He's always a great sport when he loses whereas Federer and Nadal are always bitter. When Novak's down match point he's just like well, whatever, may as well go for it.

Couldn't agree more.
Also, now, Novak's extended ball-bouncing makes total sense - he's trying to defuse the situation, to get back into the present moment. Fed should stop thinking he's above help/assistance. We all need a nudge sometimes, the earlier the better for Fed because time is ticking faster for him.

That might be true, but my point in this thread earlier has been that the mind training part has to become a lifestyle component like diet and exercise in order to summon it any time on court.
If you look up online, the only name you'd find is Pierre Paganini who's his physical trainer.

What mind training? Imagining a happy place like in Happy Gilmore? Psychologists are not miracle workers. It's a field that, most of the time, has rather limited value. Federer has played like 30+ slam finals. That experience is worth 1 million times more than anything a psychologist could teach him.

If he still gets nervous at this point, that isn't going away. Perhaps the only thing that could help is actually beating Djokovic in big matches to get rid of the mental block.

One word - meditation, especially mindfulness. That doesn't involve imagining anything. In fact, I'm making the same point as you - going to a psychologist and expecting results is like going to a restaurant and expecting great service for a fee. It needs to become part of what one does daily. Look up some meditation if you'd like more info (or PM me).

As a psychologist myself, I agree 100% here.

I believe it is an oversimplification to say Federer's solution was purely technical. He previously had the skillset to beat Nadal and he failed a lot because of a mental block.

I think I'm cautiously optimistic for this season.

But right now, this **** sucks. There's no two ways about it.

Never seen Roger this bad of his own accord on grass.

Sigh. Checking in again. Was pretty much in shock for an hour or so after the match and extremely depressed. Finally started snapping out of it after that. Still can't really believe that he blew the match today and I know it's hurting him badly inside. He's not used to losing. He's used to dominating and these coming years are going to be really, really hard for him. It's especially hard that he lost to Djokovic. Losing to Nadal I can deal with because Nadal is an excellent player. Novak is not.

I am not depressed about this loss. He is 39 years old, had 2 knee surgeries, and little to no preparation. Honestly though, he needs to retire after Wimbledon. He could really injure himself badly with one misstep and it's not worth it. His legacy is set in stone. He's on the Mount Rushmore of tennis. He has nothing to prove to anyone and hasn't had to for ages.

Delete this thread please. It's meaningless.
Fed fans are the luckiest tennis fans. Talk about backing a player who won the most and made a $1B+ just in tennis.

No Fed fan has a right to be depressed. Imagine the plights of fans of Ferrer, Nalbandian etc.

Two words: move on. I assure you that although in the short term, Federer will be disappointed. He knows what is career stands for. And in his post-playing career, I have no doubt he will go on to do spectacular things. He is highly intelligent, capable, and has a global brand like no other athlete. Yes, it's disappointing he is no longer the athlete he once was, but until we develop the ability to regenerate the human body, we will all age. He is aging more gracefully than most. I shudder to think what Novak will be like when he's done. He's already a very angry, bitter human being, who despite all of his success feels the need to roar when he wins a match. Federer has always been the class of the field. We have been fortunate to have him for as long as we did. But, I won't mourn his career, I will celebrate it, and I have no doubt he'll remain in the public eye in many different eyes. This is a man who could end up being very powerful in the world in many ways.

All good things come to an end. Big3 are officially Big2 now, or rather Big1.5.
It's just a BIG 1. Period. It's surprising why people can't see that.

The only one who can maybe challenge Novak is a hitherto unknown next gen star. That might take 2-3 yrs.

Yes it is the Big ONE and no longer big 3 or big 2

Federer is done and dusted, might be impossible to climb back from here.

Nadal also seems so, he met Djokovic in the semis, this means he was not seeded 1 or 2, that itself a sign that he is going down, soon he will drop even more that he might be like Federer next year seeded even lower that he will meet in Qfs, lol

Novak is still the top seed, holding 3 slams out of 4 even now. That is some dominance.

Real athletes/warriors do roar and show aggression on the field, it is like the roar of a lion in the jungle after getting its kill.

Federer on the other hand in his prime was like a ballet dancer / a piano artist who performed on stage and then bowed his head to all the applauds from the crowd. .... Thats a bit unsportsmanlike and more of an artistlike :D

Novak is the actual athlete, the hunter who hunts
