Depressed Zverev Fans Check In Here

Yes, made a similar thread for Kyrgios, but this USO is already disappointing me.
You'd think that these guys would step up.

Granted, Zverev fought a lot harder than Nick and was playing another #NextGen guy that has claimed some scalps of his own (Nadal, Murray, Thiem, etc.) but I really was hoping to see this guy in the final from the bottom half of the draw.

I wonder how he will bounce back. I wonder if the weight of expectations is hurting him.

Zed will bounce back and dominate the indoor season, just you watch. He won't lose a match the rest of the season, sweeping both #NextGen finals and ATP finals.

I do see him winning another title this year. I think Fedal will bow out after this tournament. I don't think either is all that obsessed with world NO 1 to Wear their bodies out on indoor HCs. Especially Nadal.

Not a good season for slams but on the bright side, he's won 2 masters and cracked top 8. Not bad at all at just 20.
I think by the very low standards of today, it's a very good season.
But you'd expect more from a "future great." I really thought we were seeing the ascent of a new Delpo (who hopefully won't ruin his wrists). Delpo had a similar lead-up to the 2009 USO, looking good at the smaller HC tourneys.

It's still early days. Fed was not winning slams at 20 either.

Maybe Zverev will never be the "great" player we have been hoping for.

We may be in a transitional era where a bunch of "very good" players of the Hewitt, Roddick, Kuerten sort win a bunch of majors from each other.

Zverev looks about on par with Berdych to me. He'd do well to equal Berdych's consistent career. Just can't see him being an all time great without top notch movement, and you just can't teach or learn that.

His build is simply not right for tennis. He's too tall and I don't care if he puts on 100 pounds of muscle, his build is not cuttin' it at the highest levels.

I'm close to giving up on Fed for this USO. I think Grigor is the only man in the draw besides Cilic (or maybe even Shapovalov) capable of stopping Nadal.
Many players are possibly capable of stopping Nadal on a hardcourt. But one thing is for sure: There is nothing (tennis wise) which Grigor is capable of while Roger is not.

Zverev will learn from this. He played a very timid match, hoping Coric would hand him points. He looked like a completely different player than against Federer at Rogers. These younger guys need to learn how to play with the high expectations that are placed on them. They play great when they play a match they are not expected to win and play scared when they are expected to win.

Winning and losing is part of the game. If he can't overcome defeats he shouldn't be there in the first place. The guy is #6 at 20 years old, can't complain about that.

Yes but this result is a huge disappointment. All signs pointed to a deep run and the draw was wide open at the bottom half.

I would be extremely disappointed if Coric doesn't reach QF at least. Very often we see a player losing easily after scoring a big win. I hope that's not the case with Coric this time.

BTW, this will be a good learning experience for Zed. He must have been feeling like he is on the moon after winning Montreal, but now he has come back down to earth. He must have learned that everyone else also is trying to improve all the time and there's no time for complacency for him. This loss will help him keep his feet on the ground and try harder and harder which will do all sorts of good to him.

while sad to see zed lose..as an early fan of borna since 2013, I was really happy with his big win after his injury nightmare of the last year.

good news for coric..after 1st rd defeat usopen2016 he didn't play again, so rest of season should see a rank boost at last.

good news for zed..this is just a blip, not a big deal in medium/long term. mentally he still too up n down, as seen here, coric kept an even keel mentally.

Disappointment for sure because he had expectations, but it happens to all the top players.

Besides, it's not like he's invincible. After beating Fed in Montreal he lost to below-#50 Tiafoe in his Cincinnati first match.

Anyway, Zverev knows it's been a great year for him since he was ranked #29 one year ago and #70 just 18 months ago. Other good guys are rising as well, he's not the only one.

What would he expect, to be number one with all the big guys still around?

I sort of thought he threw the Tiafoe match to rest himself for the USO. Tiafoe sure looked better than he did for the USO.

Yeah, on the whole, it's been a pretty good year, and maybe he can finish in the Top 5 and make a good showing in the final few tournaments of the year. Perhaps he will win AO 2018.
