What if Kazakhstan beat Canada? Serbia is out or no?
Sweden seems to be ahead of Serbia in the contention, so if Kazakhstan beats Canada, Serbia falls to #2 in the runner ups. The USA could beat Serbia's set record with a 6-2 or better, so they'd need to restrict it to at most two 3-setters and they'd need to win every match. Doesn't seem likely.

Assuming the USA doesn't succeed that, the only way Serbia is eliminated is if the following both happen:
  • Kazakhstan beats Canada
  • Russia and Spain go 2-1 AND
    • The loser wins 1 match in straight sets AND
    • The loser wins 1 other set AND
    • The loser's game win % is higher than Serbia's.
Thus Serbia moves on in a lot of situations. It's entirely possible that even if Kazakhstan beats Canada, Serbia still moves on just because Spain and Russia have very decisive matches, or because too many matches went to 3. Obviously if they are all 2-set matches, Serbia moves on (loser cannot pad their sets won in 3-setters), but strangely if the loser fails to win a match in straights, they cannot make up enough sets to eliminate Serbia.

Examples (assuming Kazakhstan or the USA manages to snag the 1st Runner Up):
Medvedev d. PCB in 2,
Rublev d. Lopez in 2,
Granollers/Busta d. Rublev/Karatsev in 2

Result: Spain is eliminated.
Medvedev d. PCB in 2,
Rublev d. Lopez in 3,
Granollers/Busta d. Rublev/Karatsev in 2

Result: Serbia is eliminated, assuming Spain's game win % is higher than Serbia's.
Medvedev d. PCB in 3,
Rublev d. Lopez in 3,
Granollers/Busta d. Rublev/Karatsev in 2

Result: Serbia is eliminated.
Medvedev d. PCB in 3,
Rublev d. Lopez in 3,
Granollers/Busta d. Rublev/Karatsev in 3

Result: Spain is eliminated.

Serbia should hope for Russia or Spain to pick up the first 2 singles rubbers in straights. If they manage that, Serbia is through to the QFs. Otherwise only going into the last match will we know if Serbia will be rooting for Spain or Russia and in how many sets.

RUNNER-UPS

Group A:
Spain/Russia loser has to win one match and 3 sets(2-0, 1-2, 0-2) to tie Serbia, 1 match and 4 sets(2-0, 1-2, 1-2) to go ahead of Serbia.

Group B:
Sweden qualified.

Group C:
Very likely out. Behind Serbia for sure.

Group D:
Out.

Group E:
United States has to win 3-0, losing not more than 1 set(2-0, 2-0, 2-1), to go ahead of Serbia.

Group F:
Serbia group.

With Russia beating Spain with Spain getting no straight set wins and Kazakhstan beating Canada, Spain was knocked out of contention. This opened up the draw for the best-case scenario.

Previously Djokovic and co would've had to go through Spain or Russia to reach the Davis Cup semis, but now they just need to go through Kazakhstan. Moreover they've been placed into the easier half of the Davis Cup, so the bigger roadblocks of Britain and Germany have been switched out for the arguably easier Italy and Croatia - at least until the final, where if I had to guess Russia will be.

Looks like Serbia and Russia are favored. Maybe we'll see the following semis:
Russia v. Britain
Croatia v. Serbia

which should be exciting tennis to watch. Could turn out fun.

Hard to be happy reading these Djokovic's Davis Cup news and updates , while Djokovic is not even playing Australian Open next month and completely turning the GOAT and Grand slam rivalry upside down .

If Djokovic doesn't play AO and Nadal wins RG , Djokovic goes to Wimbledon 2022 aged 35 with 20 slams only .

I believe Novak wants some drama now but he will still play.; the stakes are high now and I don't see him "ruining" his chances to be the slam king.He has put all that effort to come from behind in the slam race for years and he knows that Nadal can win another French Open.Still, he knows what's best for him and maybe he is thinking that there is much more in life than tennis :D

I was also hoping he would play ,but my hopes are less now after reading his Father's statements .

For the first time he has a chance to move ahead in Slam race and that too at his favourite Slam ,and he isn't playing lol .

After the bad decision to play Olympics , and then the loss at US Open Final , this is such a stupid move to sit out of Australian Open ...

It would be tragic for him and fans but funny for his haters if He goes the Serena way and never wins another . Lol

He's got the most grand slams in the bag--RF & RAFA are probably done and Nole has some good years left in him. All of them being tied with 20 maintains a drama that will help gates. Nole can play hardball with the tyrant from Vic, forcing a showdown and skip AO if the little dictator from Vic doesn't cave to popular demand--he can double date with Gov Coma on Epstein Island after being booted out of office for draconianism. Hoping Novak holds out all the way!--He'll get his 21+ later in 2022--maybe 22, 23 & 24.

Vaccination programs were not sufficiently advanced until now, and some countries do have a lower regard for public health.
CCP maybe?
And are you are aware that international air travel requires vaccination, or are the players going to row boat it all the way?

U r aware that in olden days tennis players used to voyage to OZ by steamship mate--Nole and company could book passage on the World Resident Sea--it has a tennis court on deck he could practice on.

Nadal is done at slams if he fails at winning FO again next year.

It's a bold prediction as just one year ago he was so dominant at 2020 FO.
There's a slight chance he will recover in 2023, maybe even earlier at 2022 USO.

Win against Nadal at FO was the single most important match for me

What about 2nd best/important match? For me its Fritz at AO. That might be top10 match of his carrer. Looked totally dead after sliping on that sigh, and somehow managed to win match and a slam.

2nd best was QF/SF in Rome. He went 5+ hrs and played 6 sets. Came back from set down vs Tsitsipas and I think was down a break vs Sonego.

I'm exhausted just reading all those achievements! :giggle: Btw I think he also equalled Federer's record of reaching at least 12 quarterfinals at all 4 majors at this year's US Open. ;)

I was expecting some news about Djokovic playing at the AO yesterday as the participants' list should have been finalised, but nothing, nada, zilch.... Is he playing or not?
