Ima big Tsonga fan but im not sure i want him to get to the final. Because if he does he might become like Gonzalez or bagman, get to Ao final then not do anything the rest of the season. Do any tsonga fans feel the same way.

please help me out with understanding why anyone would root against a player you like more to lose to a player you like less. thank you.

there does seem to be an AO curse going around these days, but if he beats Nadal this will be (as if it already isn't) the tournament of his life, and he'd deserve it.

If you're a big Tsonga fan, you should unequivocally want him to get to the final irrespective of a possibly bad performance in it and thereafter. If nothing else, he'll leapfrog over scores of others in the rankings, thereby getting a decent seeding for future tournaments. And, if he does get there, he'll have beaten Nadal on the way - a huge scalp. Nothing but good can come out of it. And, of course, he could win the whole thing............:)

if tsonga goes into the final, i am sure he will become another gonzo or baghdatis... boring finals.. no match against the great federer..
if nadal wins it, we are looking for great final of AO..

I think Tsongas chances are good in reaching the finals. If he can pretty much overpower Youzhny (who overpowers Nadal), imagine what he would do to Nadal's short topspin shots.

Nadal needs to win, because only Nadal could challenge Federer. Tsonga would get lost in the moment or simply get outplayed, or both.

I have to agree with you. The dilemma is that Tsonga seems to have the guns (power, serve) and Nadal sure has the heart for fighting Fed...
Is Tsonga a real fighter? I am tired of guys that do not even throw a fight with Fed...

I'm a tsonga fan and i don't want him to get to the final because there will be a lot of pressure on him next year to get to the final again so he doesn't lose points. I also like nadal, and he has a better chance to beat fed/djoko in the final

How come all of you are assuming Federer makes the finals, ever heard of Super Nova Djokovic?

Yes, just another one that is easily intimidated by Fed...
I give him NO CHANCES. NULL. NILL.
He will go home happy he got that far – we’ve seen this with Roddick, Blake, Gonzales, etc. There are very few guys that have guts when it comes to Fed.

Yea, you Nadal fans are something alright. ***** ***** ***** about Fed's draw at Wimbledon, but not a word about Nadal's easy draw at the AO, when Fed has to go through Djoko, who's effectively the #2 player in the world on HC.

In any event, Djoko's had a lot of easy matches. Don't expect him to get past Federer, especially not after his big-mouthing. Last year after he ran his mouth, Federer humiliated him. I don't think Federer likes him, for good reason. Djokovic engages in a lot of gamesmanship.

I would like Tsonga to get to the finals. I think it would bring his confidence up. But his chances are slim against Nadal.

Tsonga is Magnus Larson all over again. Virtually a mirror image in terms of strokes, technique, strategy, plodding mobility, bludgeoning power, heavy set almost viking like body and bone structure, propensity for getting injured, the top guys afraid to play them if on, and on and on.

Tsonga is a hella athlete compared to Larsson.

I guess we have different definitions of athlete. Chang would smoke Becker in any race, but I don't think he's a 10th the athlete Boris was.

I agree; Tsonga is faster in all directions, quicker and has a better backhand.

The big question against Nadal is how fit he is going to be.

I dont think Tsonga plays like larson in any stretch of the imagination. larson was a big lumbering baseliner and Tsonga plays well from everywhere in a far more athletic manner.

I think the guy is a breath of fresh air and plays a bit like a two fisted Fed. I hope this is his breakout event and that we get to see his style of play lots more often in some finals as he possesses all the shots from all over the court and mixes in a fair amount of s/v and the variety is unusual these days and fun to watch.

I used to think a guy built like Safin would be the prototype for tennis players...but those really big guys get injured a lot and cant seem to perform well match after match. I think the protype is going to be someone like Tsonga..an all courter with a two hander...the guy can do it all.....and is tres fast

Well Id say big mouth is not accurate description, in order to beat guys like federer who are mentally and otherwise dominant you gotta give yourself a chance - thinking you can beat him. Its not bad to trash talk a bit in order to raise spirits, I do agree that he will have a hard time against ferrer and if he gets past him, he's gonna have a very hard time even challanging federer, I think this is a season in which he needs to establish himself as a presence and try to prepare for constantly challanging and beating federer, but unntil that happens it may be a while, season or two.

I would rather see Nadal get to the final because I think he would give Federer more trouble then Tsonga.

The AO always seems to have a surprise finalist. I nominate Tsonga for this year. Hope he makes it, I'm tired of the Nadal/Federer matchup at the moment and would love to see an on form Tsonga v Fed

what is this about *losing* points. Is there a link that explains this. Are points actually reduced ?
