Does anyone actually care about Madrid?

Ok the women seem to take this tournament seriously. I think its a mandatory. But this tournament for the men even if its a masters seems to be the tournament that neither the Men or even fans give a fart about. No one watches in the stands. None of the men give a rats ***. It seems almost an extension of Barcelona. Except in Barcelona fans actually show up. Monte Carlo which isnt even a mandatory masters seems to hold more importance for the men. They should just drop this thing and make Hamburg a masters Grass.

Yes, Madrid does feel a lot like Shanghai in that noone cares (besides Murray for the latter since he can't win anywhere else  ) as it doesn't prepare the top guys for RG as much as Rome does cause of the playing surface mainly. MC is a lot like that too, cause by the time RG rolls around, everyone's forgotten MC and Rome's used for current form.

In a way I think the women have their schedule set up better than the men. Madrid and Rome are the two big tournaments leading into the French for them. They dont have Three like the men who then skip or tank madrid after Monte Carlo and before Rome. If Monte Carlo was not a masters I think Madrid would hold alot more importance as a masters than it does now. This tournament has a weird feel every year. Blue clay no blue clay. Top players skipping. 8 people watching. How a city like Madrid with millions of people and many top players on the mens side cant show up is weird. Hell you can almost understand China its a new sport and they dont have anyone cept Ni La. This is just weird.

Agree. The worst Masters by far. Should replace it with Hamburg.

From what I've heard from spaniards, they feel the Madrid Master's administration isn't as devoted to the sport as Barcelona's. So they tend to support the tournament a lot less even though it's a masters. Perhaps the players feel the same way.

Thats odd. Madrid might as well be in a different country than Barcelona. Barcelona has decent attendance but really filling that little stadium in Barcelona with a city that size shouldnt be hard. Madrid is a massive city I can believe tennis fans would give two craps about administration problems.

Isn't this reason enough to keep it in Madrid?

I repeat what I wrote somewhere.
Uncle Toni has always been against holding the Masters in Madrid in spring. Due to Madrid's altitude, it has conditions that differ from those in Monte Carlo, Rome and Paris.

Players have to play, because it's a mandatory Masters.

Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia. Haven't you heard that Catalans think of themselves as a separate nation from the rest of Spain?

I only cared when it was blue clay. That made it a unique event with a cool aesthetic.

I agree with this and pretty much everything else that has been said. Madrid is easily the worst of the 1000 events to me. It seems inferior in every aspect to Monte Carlo, Rome and even Barcelona. From the way it looks on television, to the atmosphere, to the actual tennis that is played. To be honest, weaker field aside, Houston comes off better on TV.

And I can't even compare to Shanghai, because Shanghai looks pretty sweet...great stadium and better atmosphere.

Blue clay made Madrid interesting, but thanks to the King and the court Djester, it sucks worse than ever now.

Seriously, think of the lesser tournaments you prefer...for me = Dubai, Acapulco, Rio, Barcelona, Halle, Queens, DC, Basel.

This year...a little bit, depends on the match-ups. I'm huge fan of night matches in Rome and look past Madrid a bit.

Even though I think the clay season is by far the best season in tennis, I don't really care that much for M. I hate the stadiums. They all have this weird roof and walls creating really annoying shadows on the court. Then the first 20 or so rows are VIP booths that are mostly empty.

Can't wait for R though!

I love Madrid, but without Federer, Djokovic and now Wawrinka, I'm not really very excited about it this year.

But normally it's one of my fave 1000's.

Why do they even hire models as ballkids?

Are you complaining? ;)

On topic though, I agree. Doubly so this year because all the top players except Nadal are out, but I've never really liked Madrid.

Nadal cares because now with an easy draw he can finally win something better than ATP500 for the first time since September.

Comments from spaniards about Madrid:

And it goes on... In short, they pretty much complain about the administrators bias with high class citizens and political figures.

And a news article about volunteers whose work is to fill the madrid stadium, so it doesn't look that empty: http://www.puntodebreak.com/2014/05/07/un-vip-infiltrado

Obviously, in spanish.

Only Rafa - Adopted Son of Madrid - can draw a big crowd to the stadium.

IT LOoks and has the feel like an indoor swimming pool (not the court obviously:))

its a bit of an indoorsy echo like you get in indoor pools..and the seats going up to some panelled windows reminds me of an indoor arena I went to go swimming when I was little

What they should do is take the 1000 status from Madrid and give it to a grass court tournament… I mean, what gives that there's no master 1000 on grass, the most traditional surface in this sport? :?

I don't care how they do it, promote Queens, promote Halle or make Hamburg a grass court event and give it back its Master's 1000 status, just make it happen!

I don't think that any player wants a mandatory Masters tournament on grass.

Nadal will have to go through the clay titans Monaco, Nieminen, Berdych, Kubot and Feliciano Lopez in order to get the title.

His toughest match will be against the guy who just got beaten and breadsticked by Carlos Berlocq.

That's a Rafa fan for you, just because Nadal wouldn't like it immediately means that nobody would like it

There are many players whose games are not suited to clay or who at least prefer grass court. These would all rejoice over a grass Master's 1000. Let's begin the list shall we?
Federer
Tsonga
Isner
Murray
Hewitt
Janowicz
Haas
etc.

Currently any good grass court player has a huge disadvantage to the other specialists. Grass court specialists can really only play 2 grass tournaments (time-wise) in the whole year. There are more more Master's 1000s on clay or hard court than that. It's extremely unbalanced and should not be so.

The players would try to skip this Masters somehow - to rest between Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
