As I have said in another post, I think it is time for the ATP to put an end to this crap. I think that if you default from an injury, you should be required to miss the next tourney that you are entered into, just to prove that you really are injured. I would rather see an injured player gut it out through the rest of the match (like Pete and Andre) than have some wuss quit just because he knows he is going to lose. This player has lost any respect that he ever had from this "djoke" of pulling out because he has "injured" his pride.

It does seem that some players are abusing the system. Especially if they are gaining points and can get some extra rest for the next week.

Davydenko's retirements has been viewed as part of this so called betting scandal since it came to light last year. He has been vilified by everyone from an overweight umpire to almost everyone on this board for his lack of effort and retirements. This is a Masters event, and something that isn't expected for deep in the tournament. Also during the week Djokovic talked about how much work he put into getting ready for this tournament and the clay court season, so we won't know for sure. I don’t agree with the OP though, until we know exactly what was wrong with Novak.

Backlash, the way people are talking about Djokovic for his retirement, but nothing has been said about Davydenko retiring last week and handing Fed a title when he obviously wasn't hurt, and showed no signs of it this week. Didn't even call a trainer that I know of. That in itself is a travesty. Not that I care, Davydenko has proved to be a wuss of the highest caliber and he deserves whatever he gets!

i never presume that a player is faking an injury. the general public is rarely aware of all of the injuries someone may be carrying. while i admit, it LOOKS bad when someone waves the white flag and shakes hands before the final point is played . . . it's THEIR call and not mine.

If he pulls out in the middle of the match, yes. He has a responsibility to the people that paid for tickets to watch the match.

So now there is a stipulation on ticket sales? If the player does not complete the match due to withdrawal he will refund you the face value of the purchased ticket.

What if the player retires in the middle of the 2nd set? Then he would only have to refund the crowd half the ticket price.

But I know where you're coming from - if it were a shoulder, knee, ankle, wrist I'd agree 100%. Not sure if you watched the match - I did - I didn't see someone struggling.
Back to the OP's comment. I think this will work itself out - as in tournament directors won't give some guys as much appearance cash if they have a track record of not putting out the effort. I'm not saying Djoko faked an injury, because of course we'll never know. But, I do think you have a good point and the ATP should look into it. Many of these retirements seem suspect, and if a player retires without sustaining an injury during a match, it might not be a bad idea to penalize them by not allowing them to play in their next scheduled tournament. If they're injured they shouldn't mind, the injury needs a rest anyway. But, if they're not being truthful they could lose points for faking it. It is unfair if players are indeed faking it.

I didn't see him struggling, I watched the match from 2-2 in the 1st set and he looked fine to me. Even before he retired he broke Roger at love and was broken after a lengthy game. He looked fine, but he said he felt different. :?

Davy retired in a final, then played a day or so later with no evidence of injury. That's just not right. What's good for the goose!

This sounds a little more serious than he was letting on to the press yesterday. Venus Williams had similar issues last fall and lingering effects this year. But he should be fine; hopefully they will get a diagnosis and proper treatment in a timely manner.
