Donald Young Beat #240 in the world Phillip Simmonds (who has wins over top 100 players) 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 yesterday in the California Challenger that's going on. Somewhat of a good win for the guy. At least proves to some people around here he can actually beat an ATP player.....still a long way to go though.

I see he was given a wild card to get into that one. Somebody still believes in him.

It's good to see him actually winning, hopefully he will get a little stronger physically and win an ATP match in the future. Well, its not just the physical he needs to work on, but it should be a start.

I think alot of it is dependant on him maturing physically. Look at Djokavic.....the guy looks like he's 25. Young could still pass for 16. It's kind of something he can't help.

I saw a few pics and some clips of him during the Davis Cup tie, and he seems to be growing into his body. But at the same time, I have to blame his parents for letting him turn pro so early, because both on a mental and physical level he is just not ready. He is like 0-10 on the tour and have won what one set???

I saw him play in Miami and in his first round match against Djokavic at the US Open last year, and to me the talent is there, but at the same time he is rough in a lot of areas, especially his fitness, serve and movement. But your right I don’t think it is something he can help and will have to just wait and see if he will live up to the hype.

yea, I saw him at a future tourney in florida and I agree the talent is there just should have waited a bit. I just naturally became stronger around age 20 (later than some) and I'm guessing that's what's gonna happen with him.

One thing for sure is that hanging out with the US Davis cup team and having those players helping him out has probably installed quite a bit of confidence and knowledge. I read some article where he said Roddick was beating up on him and giving him pointers and that he now understands that he has to fight from beginning to last ball and not get the hangdog look. I suspect he'll start to make a move and win a couple more matches.

Wow! His parents must be so proud. Why do people keep talking about him like he's the LeBron James of men's tennis?

I actually sat and talked to his mom for a long while at a Challenger event a few months back. She is a very nice lady.

Donald has great hands and incredible feel for the ball, but looks like the scrawny kid he is when on court with some of the Tennis Terminators who fill the ATP level ranks.

If he doesnt' get totally disheartened by the constant losing, I think in time (and with physical growth) he could be a great player. Just not now.

3 of the top 4 current junior players in the world have later birthdays then him. I look forward to his first loss to somebody younger then he is. I dont believe he has ever had one, but feel free to correct me if I am wrong. The hype around him is ridiculous, and still is. I wish nobody would talk about him, he is a teenage kid who is barely a satellite quality player. He is not even close to main ATP tour caliber. Since everybody does I would rather root against such an annoying artificialy created hype machine, that should for all intents and purposes be ignored. Who cares about his junior achievement, many great juniors sucked as pros, and he didnt even stay in juniors all that long to prove consistency there.

The fact he gets his own thread just for beating the World #240 to win the first round of a challenger is ridiculous. Although it is telling that such a result is considered such a big upset, I agree on that front, Young beating the World #240 is a big upset and something that will probably be one of his year highlights. Since that is the kind of attention he gets for basically doing nothing, I will continue to enjoy watching him continue to make a mockery of the hype and predictions that were hoisted on him, partialy by his own team including his parents.

Whatever his age, he's just not strong enoung yet. His serve is the big weakness, barely cracks 100mph on the first one sometimes. Some pop on the forehand wouldn't hurt either. With his lefty game, if he develops those two things, he will start winning matches.

there's also a thread about Canas getting a foot fault in the sony ericsson open. i think a thread about a young underdog winning a match against a higher-ranked player has more merit than a thread about a FOOT FAULT.

and how do you know he won't be a good player? maybe he will live up to his hype, what would you do then?

Well, Canas has beaten Federer twice in a row, so anything interesting that happens in one of his matches is infinitely more important than hearing about young Donald's struggles to live up to his hype. And if you saw that foot fault, Canas's hissy fit over the call was definitely worth remarking on.

Far out just leave the poor kid alone.... He is only young its not his fault so much pressure has been put on him (i dont think so any ways)...

I think it's time for Carlsen to retire. He's been a great ambassador for Danish tennis, but I think his playing style is getting too outdated.

And his name is CarlSEN, not Carlson.

I wasn’t much of a fan of Donald Young until seeing him play at the 2006 US Open, he is very talented, but very weak physically and in some areas of his game.
ANYWAY………

It is funny that he won another match, even though it might not a big of a deal but someone is going to find fault no matter what he does. Just leave the little boy alone, he is not the first hype from the USA that has not lived up to the expectations, but trust me he won’t be the last.

It has been said before and I will say it again, he still young and has SO much to learn. Only time will tell, and for all those that are predicting he will go nowhere, give him a break.

And Donald downs the Dane Carlsen in 3. 6-7 6-3 1-6

Wow, I think this is the 1st time Young has won back to back matches in a challenger. I think being a davis cup practice partner last week gave him a boost. His match with Kevin Kim in QF should be interesting.

So much animosity. If he has the goods, he'll make it. If he doesn't he won't. It's that simple. Stop drinking that Haterade.
