Worst Player to Make 2 Slam Finals (without winning)

Well I mean the pool is small here.

Cedric Pioline, Todd Martin, Miroslav Mecir, Kevin Anderson, Robin Soderling, Steve Denton, Mark Philippoussis, Kevin Curren, Alex Corretja.

And yes, the question might as well be if Kevin Anderson is the worst 2-time finalist.

I might be missing one.

aha KAndyman for sure, although Todd Martin might be there are well

Pioline was unlucky to meet Sampras on both occasions (Wimby and USO) he was a fantastic player on his day

And Corretja. Tony Roche made 3 finals in the open era without winning one, though he won one in the amateur era.
But Denton is the worst. No titles, CH #12 and those finals were in the MM AO.
Yes, I was about to add Corretja and I think that's about it as far as the OE is concerned.

Don’t think much of Kevin Anderson. But if you say Pioline was unlucky to face Sampras you have to say the same thing about KA. Nadal and Novak in both finals.

I have to say Pioline gets extra points for playing with a cheap aluminum frame whereas KA has a quality stick.

Hard to argue against Denton though since he never won a title. Plus I’ve never even heard of him!

Clearly Denton. But arguably he shouldn't really be in consideration since those weren't below-par fields and don't entirely count. Similarly, Johan Kriek is probably the weakest two-Slam winner in the open era.

Mecir is the best, Soderling a close second.

Steve Denton is the worst easily since he never won a title. Ever.
Kevn Andr is way better than him.

Before I got to the parenthetical I was already thinking Cilic. How in the world has he made 3 and won 1?

Worse player to make 1 final? Berdych? Phillippoussis? Baghdatis? González? Puerta?

Out of those, Puerta (the drug cheat) who never made it past the 2nd round of any other slams (ok he was banned for 8 years after his doping test)then Baghdatis.

Phillipousissis beat Sampras in the AO in 1996 and RG in 2000 (later one not so good I admit) Also beat Agassi on the way to the 2003 wimbledon final

Berdych has wins over the bug 4 in slams, multiple over Fed and Murray and has won a masters, took out Fed at the 2004 olympics too, arguably good enough to sneak a slam if he'd got a bit of luck

Gonzalez was a decent player on his day

SO i'd say in order from weakest to strongest Puerta, Baggy, Gonzo, Berdych/Scud

Tood Martin? Martin was actually a very good player but had some bad luck with quite a few injuries in his career.

Pioline and Anderson are pretty much on par as far as I'm concerned. Yes Pioline could be great, but frankly so can Anderson and I rank Anderson opponents at least as high as Pioline's. AFTer this Wimbledon Anderson has gained a lot of respect from me for how he beta Federer and Isner. Despite those tough matches he still could've (actually should've) won the 3rd set against DJokovic in the final.

Soderling more or less on par with philipoussis, although the latter at least made 2 finals on different surfaces.

Denton takes it for worst of the bunch.

So basically for me the ranking would be:
Corretja~Mecir
Martin~Soderling~Philipoussis
Pioline~Anderson
Denton

Not sure about Curren, I never saw him play. Based on his achievements I suppose he should be just above Denton, but maybe he was much better than his achievements tell us.

I have Curren right in there with Pioline and Anderson. They all have similar records, they all had career high rankings of #5, and Pioline and Curren both had 5 titles (Anderson has 4 and could easily add at least 1 more title).

LOL Pioline and Anderson on par and Corretja = Mecir :D:D

proof you don’t know a thing about tennis - why do you bother posting on a tennis forum then??

Soderling wayyyyy better than the clay specialist

Soderling had one more title off of clay than Corretja, with Corretja winning WTF (beating Sampras in the SF), Indian Wells, D.C. (beating Agassi in the final), and Indianapolis (beating Agassi in the final).

plus Sod has the distinction of beating Nadal at the FO. That match he played was unreal. I think he would have beaten anyone that day.

But of course Boom-Boom! As the eminence grise of TTW and tennis in general, obviously I will immediately defer to your opinion, which is certainly superior than anyone else's here...
Please, we all know about your history of posting here, especially throwing out doping accusations left and right. You call yourself a tennis fan or expert? A waste of forum real-estate at most.
