Well I think Nadal is a wise man. He would like to retire on a high note.
So to be back on #1, he hired Moya.
He knew there's not much wind left in his sail so he came up with academy. Fed also came up with Laver cup to ensure they play after retirement. I don't see many H2H matches now.
I think he will play '18 season and '19 till RG being possibly #1 or at worst a top 5.

 Win there, unveil your statue and take retirement

Then come back in 2020 clay season (full fresh) like that ****** mayweather, who won't give him a WC ?!
Win there (I still don't see many players who can beat him then) and get back in top 10. Play some grass if still not there !
Then go to tokyo and finish with possible gold/silver ware !!

And then sayonara !!
