while we all know who are those who have the fastest serves, do we know whose groundstrokes are amongst the fastest?

I think Monfils holds the record for both fastest forehand and fastest backhand. However, his average groundstroke speed would probably be pretty slow.

i think federer has pretty fast groundies, and he can rip his forehand or backhand for crazy winners.

roddicks old forehand was veryyy fast, but hes starting to go back to that stage.

Blake has pretty fast ones also as he plays a mainly attacking ball style.

gonzales forehand record - 120-125? i know its something like that.
a handful of players come to mind on huge forehand groundies, verdasco, blake, gonzales. all these guys, i would say, can crack their forehands up over the hundreds if they were to go for it.

hell, it's noted kramer and villas were able to get theirs' over the 100's back then, not quite as regularly i suppose.

At the moment it's probably Federer. The way he can just step it up is pretty amazing

It was clearly a fluke, he used the speed of a Tsonga's bomb...but that's it...

I've seen alot of pros forehand break 100 mph, Monfils, Djoko, Nadal, Gonzo, Dasco, Gulbis I even saw Gasquet believe it or not, Hardest backhands Dasco, Djoko, Gulbis, Gasquet(im sure im missing a few here)

So i guess if we count one groundstroke I say Gonzos forehand, both wings I say verDasco

Backhand: I guess it would be Safin for the 2HBH and Gasquet for the 1HBH.

Off both wings I think a case is to be made for Gulbis.

For average speeds, they showed the speed for every shot in a Safin-Federer rally during their 5-setter in the semis a few years ago
In general Safins groundstrokes were at the mid-high 70s
Federers were in the low-mid 70s, about 3-5 mph slower
and then Federers slices were at about 50 mph

Almagro hits it pretty hard, as does Gonzo and Glubis. I've seen all of them live and it sounds like a bomb exploded when one of them steps into it and just lets fly. However, Monfils has the record for fastest speed, I believe. 120 mph. That's damn fast.

I know he's not going to be at the top, but can I throw in Igor Andreev in the mix? He tends to favor his forehands, but they really crackle on TV. I can't imagine what they're like live. His consistency isn't quite there but he tends to bomb his way through a match.

I've actually seen Nadal hit well over 100mph many times. The fastest I've seen him do is 124mph...a really flat one. Djokovic at Queens against Rafa hit one fh well above Nadal's 124 I think.

Are you trying to be funny or do you actually think they didn't have speed guns in the 90's? Speed Guns have been used in tennis for a long long time. They may not have been as prevalent in the 60's and 70's since the radar gun was invented in the 50's but since the 80's they have been standard fare at most of the tournaments. I will add though that measuring the speed of grounstrokes was not as common back then and mainly used for serve speed.
